Guess I got a littel trigger happy.

    Reposting questions:

    1. The image in the FAQ suggests that you can only open gold boxes via spending Mithril Coins. Is this the case or was I confused by the picture?

    2. Exactly how often may one open a box without spending Mithril Coins?

    3. Does the alert remain on your HUD if you are not currently able to open the box in question, or does it disappear after being viewed?

You get one free silver box per day, and one free gold box per week per account is what it says. You can then use mithril coins to purchase/ open new boxes.

Not sure how I feel about them. Especially after reading:
What types of rewards can I receive?

Hobbit Presents contain a wide variety of rewards, like equipment, buffs, gold, Mithril Coins, and more. When equipment is generated, it will take into account your character's class and level, and the rarest drops include legendary-tier equipment.
Seems to me like it's a way to use money to buy legendary equipment ($$ to points to mithril coins to boxes) which is something they said they wouldn't do. I'm not liking that. I do like free stuff, but I'm not sure that I like daily free stuff just for logging in.

it doesn't say if what you get is going to be bound to the character or account, though it does say the equipment awarded will take into account the character's level and class. I'm still figuring out what I think.

Let's cut to the chase: can horse lord recipes and 1st age symbols drop from these boxes?

Yes or no and and at what rate would be great to know.

1 You may wish to read the text. There is a count down timer showing the time remaining to the next FREE box.

2 Daily for silver, weekly for Gold (Assuming you are VIP. Only VIP can open gold boxes for free).

    3 I'll ask.

When do these start? And will they continue "forever" (until plans change) or is it a limited time thing, run alongside certain events (e.g. festivals)?

These presents, are they per character or per account?

Are the rewards BoA, BoE, BtA or not bound at all?

Do they have a vendor value?

Will buying a gold present reset the gold-present-timer?
(If I use coins to buy on the 6th day, will I get the free one the next day, or in seven days?)

    This seems cheesy to me.

It feels like a casino that gives you a free pull at the slot machine in hopes that you'll put in a nickel (or a quarter) next time. Everyone's a winner!

In my mind, I see a TV advertising campaign with the slogan "What happens in Hobbiton stays in Hobbiton."

If the quality of game play isn't good enough to keep players logging in daily or weekly, then that's what I'd prefer Turbine focus its development efforts on.

Edit to clarify: I like the idea of occasionally (but not regularly) giving away free stuff. You really can't go wrong with the good will from the community and lucky feeling that comes from it. I just really dislike the gambling implications of this system.

Hoping that I'm wrong when I think I know the answer to the question, but are the Creeps included in the daily/weekly rewards? I'm sure the hobbits won't be sending anything, but maybe Sauron is going to be generous to his minions?

it does say that it's one gift per account
How often do I receive free Hobbit Presents?

Every account receives one free silver present every 24 hours. If you skip logging in for one or more days, your free Hobbit Presents do not carry over.
Doesn't answer the other questions, which I'm wondering about as well. So far I think my impression mirrors Fredalas'.

Ah, my bad, I misread the FAQ.

My gut feeling now is that this is disturbingly similar to Runescape's Squeal of Fortune(link here: http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Squeal_of_Fortune). That system received a large amount of criticism for allowing players to eventually acquire high tier items through repeatedly buying 'rolls'. While this doesn't seem quite the same, it does give me an uneasy feeling that people may be able to do the same here.

I still don't want to come off as ungrateful though. Getting free stuff just for playing is great, it's really the 'uber gear' aspect that bothers me.

Is this per character or per account? If I log in just one of my 9 does just that character get flagged for the present, or do all characters get it?

I never miss a lottery, so this is something else that I think is a fun addition!

    Thanks!

Where are those extra presents coming from?

    World drop?
    Store bought?

Store bought, spend Mithril coins on both sides of the transaction. Not really a decent business practice but you pays your money and takes your choice.

World drop, hmmm, nice way of generating extra coin sales and bumping up the bottom line.

If it's one box per account, I guess one should consider carefully which char to log in with. Or will I get the option to open the box with a different char if I don't open it with the first char that is offered a box?

You lost me. Did you read the FAQ? When you log in there will be a banner that you click on to open up the dialog. one free silver box per account per day, one free gold account per account per week. Looks like a "spin and win" kind of thing, and you can spend mithril coins for more boxes, or "spins"

From what I've read so far this is more of a twisting of the old Daily Present in the Mail system from the Secret Admirer. Ok so you wanted to create a more wide range of presents using our class and level expanding upon this old present system. That much is nice. I hope the Silver presents are per character and not account as you'll be making us pick and choose who to open things on.

That said to then add Mithril Coins into the mix is just plain wrong to do. If you are going to create a system were we get free stuff and possibly GOOD free stuff you should not have any method to pay to win utilizing TP and/or Mithril Coins. That right there is where the community is going to backfire on you. Ever since F2P and the Store were created we were told you wouldn't make it pay to win. You already made it so every LI legacy, relic and upgrade are in the store which already greatly damaged the not paying to win promise. With this another string holding that old agreements in place is broken.

Well, it's like a lootbox... whitout the key and with legendary stuff.

I must say I'm not overjoyed with this... Turbine finally find a way to sell gear (legendary gear nothing else) through $$ > Mitrils Coins > Hobbit Presents.

1.Are the displayed items the only potential items for that days pull at that tier?

I ask because DDO shows the category breakdown by dice value for the given day. (and it more clearly illustrates the weighted value of a gold vs silver roll), where your screenshots show a number of specific items.

    2. Can EVERYONE purchase the gold present tickets? (Conflicting information in the article, VIPs get 1xGold a week, but further down it says.. " Gold presents have a higher chance to drop rare items, and are only available to VIP accounts."

In ddo, anyone can buy the ticketed style access to the gold tier, and it seems absurd that we wouldnt be able to here, but thats what the article says.

3."the rarest drops include legendary-tier equipment."- Does this include Class-specific gold items? It seems likely to include first-ages. Are these items bind-to-character, bind-to-account, or unbound? (Such as a first-age raw item-might might need to be traded)

Like sirwillow, I'm conflicted. While I do the lotteries when I think about it and one is up, it seems somehow wrong for this manna to be raining from heaven. I like the idea of getting a Tarnished Crest or better, it seems wrong to just *get* it. It's like being on the dole while still having a decent income.

So this also means I lose focus when a craban or a grodbog drops a lootbox. On balance, I think I'd rather not get the Hobbit Presents, or Lotteries, or Lootboxes -- I'd rather earn stuff with my in-game actions rather than having loot teleport in from the Ethereal Plane of Largesse.

But that won't stop me from opening the boxes or auctioning the keys or entering the lottery... Yes, I'm conflicted.

Fortunately DDO's implimentation tells me I probably have very little to fear will entice me into spending my vast horde of MC.

I'll continue to open the free-boxes and participate in the external 'lottery' (which is more of a raffle) as long as its run. [DDO's lottery is still run, the question is if it'll survive to forum 3.0]

Seeing as this is Turbine, I am sure that the chance of getting anything good, or rare, or even a weapon will be very. very small.

I wanna hope this is a replacement to the lotteries which have always been "Beta". If this is a way to save that feature and not have to code it into the forum upgrade, I'm good with that. I'm also good if it's 99% fluff, or stuff like what we get in lotteries. Just means I don't have to visit the lottery page anymore.
