Well, if they fired them we would not be able to come here and have pointless arguments then would we? Where is the fun in that?

Also, Turbine is in Massachusetts, we don't need any more people on the Unemployment rolls here in the People's Democratic Republic of Massachusetts.

Look. I offered them all a severance sammich from Lambert's and that is saying a lot.

Personally I would prefer a game that held my attention over a forum that held my attention. If I had something to do in Lotro right now... I would be logged in. But I am not, because I don't.

But immature people are going to bicker about just about anything on a semi-anonymous public gaming forum, so that alone isn't a good reason not to have it IMO.

Based on my experiences with reputation systems on several forums, they basically measure two things:

    1. How regularly you post. The vast majority of rep bumps are on posts made within the last day, so if you're not a regular poster you're not going to have the opportunity to get much rep. This is actually the #1 factor IMO.
    2. Whether your posts are entertaining, clever, or interesting, or are clear statements of views held by many. On the DDO forums, my largest "rep-getting" posts were ones where I was critical of aspects of the game. I get the impression that lurkers may use that as a way to "vote" for commentary they agree with, without speaking up themselves.
I don't see this system as really doing a lot for the forums, one way or the other. If people want to participate, leave em on. If not, turn them off. If you don't want to even see them, use AdBlock to clip them out of the HTML.

You seem to painting yourself quite well.

There's no logic behind them and some of the tone of your posts borders on trollish.

Nope, don't need to have ever made a post to give positive rep.

Can't give negative rep unless you have more pips.

False. The more you post the higher your rep. If you look at how the systems setup, that just how it works.

Er no - I have almost 2k posts and was at 10 rep until today (when 2 posts I contributed to netted me 46 rep total for some reason). There are folks with lower post points with high rep, and folks at high post points with low rep. It has no bearing on the # of your posts (at least not directly).

I could have sworn I started out with just 10 rep too. So I think you are right.

Yes, they are....Which is why we'd need the community to have a "report" function that brings it to Community-team attention.

And I have a bit of graphic design knowledge. Rest assured mine wouldn't be "ugly".

Hell, I'd probably make them for other folks, too, if they requested it.

We already do. The little warning icon in the top right corner of every message.

I meant for signatures specifically, if we were allowed to use custom images. I suppose the post report function could be used, if there was a way to differentiate what you're reporting (is there a dialog box or something? I've haven't reported a post for a looong time).

You can already use custom signatures. You just have to add it manually to the bottom of every post. The report function takes you to a blank forum page with a text box in which you describe the issue that you are reporting. It can be used just as easily to report a signature or image in any post.

No, not "case in point". I'm not ridiculing anyone for choosing to have the rep system turned on/off - I don't assign any particular meaning to either choice. There are twits who have it on, and good contributors who don't.

However, I am complaining about the people who make all these silly assumptions about other people's motives for making either choice, and they deserve it. Life experience tends to teach people that making those sorts of snap judgements is foolish.

Seeing as this has moved far off the original question posed by the OP. We're done.
