Also do not try to load the game launcher until you are 100% sure the game is back up - it can cause a possible corruption of your game.

Oh for sure, I believe those of us offering the server down advise just do not wish to see anyone bug-up (hmm now that term can be transplanted...) their game, which many do by jumping the gun and popping the launcher (most of the time it will not bug your install, but at times it can)

As someone who also runs a rig with a SSD, I can verify that putting LOTRO on one helps speed up the load times really well. Heck, all of my games went from long loads to amazingly quick load times. Even when booting up the system (as I run windows off of that drive), I'll literally wait like 10 seconds from power on to logging in -- it just loads Windows that fast. ^_^

I have a SSD in my desktop since last year (yeah, prices were still a bit crazy then). I intended this drive specifically for games. When I bought it, the advice was given to not use it as an extra drive just for games. The speed of the SSD would be actually slowed because the OS (operating system) would still be working on a conventional disk. A first SSD is best used when it also contains the OS of the computer.

I got some more advice about that from some good friends and they were all saying the same. So I decided to partition the drive and have a partition for the OS and one for LOTRO (it's a rather large install). The boot time of my PC went from like 45 seconds to about 15-20 (depending on how fast I type the logon password) from turning it on to seeing my desktop.

I also got a SSD with background garbage collection. This feature means that the drive will basically clean up and somwhat defrag itself when it is not being used. So if I walk away from my computer to do something else for a certain amount of time, the disk will start cleaning itself up.

A word of warning that I cannot stress enough: never, and I repeat never, defrag a SSD yourself. These puppies have a lifetime of well over 100 years. Each time you defrag the SSD, you could half the lifetime. Which theoretically means that with 6 times defragging, the lifetime of the drive is about 2 years.

One kind reminder:

Never, ever store critical DATA on your SSD. Keep it safe elsewhere.

SSD's fail without prior warning. They can and will in time brick. Some faster than others.

Only use your SSD for what it's truly good for: run OS, software, games from it.

Your data is safer on a classic HDD.

Trust me on this. I've had a SSD brick on me and I wasn't the first nor will be the last person who had that happen. And I'm mighty glad I had all data on the classic HDD.

Other than this, I love my SSD, every day I start up my PC at work I'm reminded just how sluggish a classic HDD is.

Actually, most conventional HDDs only come with a 1yr warranty so if you have critical data make sure to back it up elsewhere (eg CD-R, DVD-R).

Even these are not failsafe, so make sure you always have at least one working backup somewhere (yes you should test your backups periodically and replace if bad).

Backup your precious data on cloud. You can't do that with your music/film archive or &$!# stash unless you are willing to pay high but most precious data wouldn't usually be in the form of audio/video anyway and a free cloud account should do the trick.

As for large amounts of backup, external hard drives are much more reliable than DVD disks should you care for them properly and that comes from personal experience. Especially large chunks of files tend to corrupt all by themselves in time on DVDs.

I and another kin member was getting lag causing the game to be unplayable in certain raids etc.

Both have very high powered PC's and fast internet (both have the game on SSD too)

I can get 100 - 200FPS in most areas of the game on Ultra High.

Changing the graphics from DX11 to DX9 stopped the lag for both of us.

Obviously I can't report on any improvement until the servers are back but I was experiencing a lot of Lost Connection scenarios while loading so I hope to see that change. The fix on Monday seemed to help that as well but I already had my SSD on order at that point.

If the disconnect is a timout because of slow loading you can hope for them to dissapear entirely I can not remember getting 'lost-connection' even once since swithing to SSD (7 months ago!) LoTRo loads incredible fast for me now.

Only drawback: Gone are the times i enjoyed a dwarf-ale on the balcony while switching alts
