I figure my minstrel barely uses her weapon, so is getting a weapon or title with ancient dwarf damage useless? Or is the damage type of your weapon somehow applied to your other skills?

the weapontype of any weapon is only applied to the skills using said weapon.
In case of minstrel, this is only the one melee skill. So not really worth it.
When sarnur was develloped, minstrels were pure healers. Sarnur was meant to be a groupzone where you'd heal and others with the right damagetype would do damage![]()

You can get Minstrel instruments with the various damage types. I crafted and carry 3 sets of drums, one for each main damage type.
The one boss is very difficult to beat without a Dwarf type weapon.

You do realize that you can only change dmg type of 1 melee skill with title scrolls and dmg type of echoes of battle if you wield some low lvl instrument?
Just use best instrument you can and be happy with that your skills will always do light damage which does work in Sarnur.

My drums are L45, and my alt is L50; Drums seem to be the only ones that actually improve damage, all the rest seem to help healing, reduce power costs or shorten induction times.
As for Sarnur, I have been in with one alt (not a Minstrel), and got pasted by that Boss; switched to a Dwarf Damage weapon, went back and pasted him with relative ease, so he DOES really need it, unless you are well over cap. My Minstrel took him down with ease at L47 with that Drum. He also took out that stealthed cat ( the one that ambushed and killed my Hunter a few months back); even though he was engaged in a fight with two dwarves and a couple of crows at the time.
