Book 13 Dev Diary Feedback: Fishing in LOTRO

A most-requested feature has finally arrived: Fishing! What better way to relax and enjoy the world of Middle-earth than by finding a nice spot along the bank of a river, casting your line into the water nearby, and basking in the glory of the day while trying to nab a prize-winning fish – or perhaps your next meal! Fishing in the Ettenmoors should be interesting.

If I catch you fishing I won't kill you if you share the catch.

    Looks great!

More importantly if you fish in the hoardale while it's poisoned, do you get poisoned fish?

Cool! I wonder if reeling a fish in requires any input by the player (like in FF11), or if something nibbles = we get fish.

Exciting, thanks for the info! Can't wait to give it a try.

But... now I find I'm wishing I knew more about the Hobby system.

Will we be allowed more than one hobby per character? I'd love to pour a lot of effort into fishing... but, I'd hate to learn 6 months from now that I have to drop fishing to make room for a new hobby.

I sure hope so. If some silly hobbit wants to sit down on the bridge at Hoarhollow and leave themselves a wide open target for approaching wargs, what business is it of anyone else's?

I really hope so too. I both hope to fish there, and kill people fishing there

I don't think there should be any fish that can only be found in the Ettens, but the rat folk there need some fishies to eat so I'm sure there's gotta be something in the Hoardale.

Looks great. I just wish they would expand into empty buildings instead of shoving new NPC's into currently occupied ones...it would make the towns look fuller.

This fish trophy looks great! However, I don't see the button that makes the fish sing.

The functionality for fishing will be in the Ettenmoors, but chances are that you won't catch anything but a few weeds right now.

    boooooooooooo.

Don't artificially gate the system in certain places, please. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to catch fish in the Moors too. There are existing mechanics (gank groups, public chat channels, NPCs) to prevent zone-wide fishing tournaments from keeping people from their normal keep-taking routines.

how about allowing players to be able to mount the fish like woodworker gets a taxidermy recipe. like recipe call for, fish, wood, and stuffing. that will help with the player interaction and social aspect of the game that needs attention, and allow them to make rods/poles. you catch a fish have your friend mount it for you, or go to there shop and buy the latest pole for those big fishes.

or something instead of npcs doing it. we need more player crafter interaction. outside of the adventuring group.

i am glad to have fishing but i hope you decide to make it more player interaction instead of go to npc get gear fish and go back to npc mount or sell.

Fabulous. Happy to see hobbies arrive (as if I need yet another time-sink). But it's great to see it become more of a world. So lets hope for more hobbies in the very near future. And hope to be able to have more than one. - as was suggested in a previous post here.

Thumbs down Re: Book 13 Dev Diary Feedback: Fishing in LOTRO

It's not that I think fishing is a bad thing for the game, but is it really something to get this excited about? Personally, this feature is not for me. I was hoping the dev's would be introducing at least SOME new content for level 50 players that is interesting and engaging, but I don't think fishing is it.

Of all of the things that they could be introducing (expanded pvp area, new raids/instances, better craftable gear, more rare and extreme items, diversifying the pvp experience beyond zerg v zerg, giving incentive to freeps to gain rank, I could go on) they choose to spend time and energy on fishing? I guess I can't really blame them for what they are focusing on: in every dev chat i've been to some jokers always ask "When will we see fishing?" and "When will we see player housing" and that's what they've produced.

There just isn't enough content at the level cap to keep players interested in this game.

    Bottom line: May 20th FTW

Heh, nice. That brings up an interesting point. Are there any bodies of water that we WON'T be able to fish in (besides the moors, currently)? If I drop my line in the poison water in CD, will I pull up a baby Helchgam? Rather than knowing where I can fish, I'd love to know where I shouldn't bother fishing... Wouldn't want to spend hours in one spot to learn that it's not fishable.
