Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
After seeing that wonderful video made for the Dark Hunters of Windfola, my toon wants to be able to really hug friends. Who else would like the HUG emote become a real emote instead of mere words?

Truly interactive emotes would be AWESOME! Not sure how difficult that would be to code, but if they can move a chair underneath you, I would think they could move your two characters into the proper position to do the interactive emote.
I suspect for such kinds of emotes where they would have to move the receiving character into position also, a confirmation dialog would need to be put up to ask the other player if they want to participate in the emote.

P.S. What video are you talking about?

Animation linking is very tricky, in a lot of ways.
We don't move chairs, we give characters what we call "chairpants": a chair is summoned when the emote calls for it. Just like anvilpants and horsepants.

I can get chairpants, anvilpants and horsepants, but I can't get the Skumfil pants? :(

Ah... That's interesting. Didn't know that.
Well... in that case I guess a different game mechanic would need to be developed. I'm sure it probably is tricky to do, but it would likely be worth a Best New Innovation in an MMORPG award. :)

INteresting. This would explain why when you cut off your emote mid way and start a new one, it jumps around instead of qeueing. Thanks for the info, Floon :)

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
To add to the problems of animation linking, spend a moment considering the relative heights of the various races. Man-dwarf hugs could get a little... awkward.
Ahem.

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
While I'd love the idea for this in some ways, it's almost bound to be misused at some point, which is why unfortunately I suspect hug emotes won't ever happen.
And I have to say, I can see it going from something sweet to something skeevy really fast. Look what people did with the /pushup emote.
Ultimately, I can see many people having a problem with this. I play a female toon and have already had to deal with a few creepy stalkery players (luckily the exception not the rule in the two years I've been playing), so I think in actuality hugs would be overused emotes that would even possibly create server problems due to their interactivity and complexity. I think they'd be cute on occasion -- but also intrusive and creepy. I'm not sure it's worth it.

Not likely as GuildWars has had a system that "links" emotes for a long time. Sync'd dancing FTW.

LOTRO's red-headed step-sister, DDO, has the /hug emote. Its quite popular. Its not linked - it just shows you hugging air (unless you properly align yourself to the other person, or thing).

So, if Turbine already has the program for this, why would it be so difficult to add here I wonder? :(

There is an emote called "chairpants"? I never knew that!

Matrix Online had interactive emotes. It was really cool. When someone targeted you and did an emote that should be interactive a permission box would pop up asking permission and if accepted the emote would play.

I don't think there's much in the way of cross-compatability here ....
The skins and frames in DDO are totally different than LOTRO.
As for tech limits, I think Floon was saying that making emotes interactive (i.e. when I /hug, it causes our toons to line up properly and perform an appropriate hug) is difficult. DDO's version doesnt' do that.
I'm sure they could do a /hug emote here like in DDO - its just they'd have to do all the animations for all the races, genders, etc., like any other emote sequence.

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
I think interactive emotes could be really cool. Some ideas:
/hug
/highfive
/dance (interactive dancing)
/shake (shake hands)
/kiss (could be the most fun one of all hehe, although I'm sure if implemented it would be done European-style with pecks on the cheeks)
While this would be in the fluff category, given this is a MMORPG I think allowing players to interact with each other more should still warrant some attention. This could really add a bit of fun to the game.

Or the forehead kiss like all royalty seems to do...

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
If it can be done I am for it.
On a side note... please, please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE limit the number of emotes you can do in 30 seconds time. There is absolutely no reason for someone to hug someone else 300000000 times in the course of 1 minute. I would even be happy if it was limited to 5 emotes per minute. The emote spam at 21st and DV is just ridiculous!

You CAN get Skumfil pants, just eat a lot of boiled cabbage, a bowl of prunes, and wait....

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
You mean like AoC's emotes? I loved those. /hug would make your character reach out and hug the toon in front of you.. same for /kiss /embrace etc etc.. Was very creative. I think it would be a nice addition to a game so heavily based on roleplaying like LotRO.

What game is AoC? Maybe I should be playing that game instead. :)

I can understand that, but would it be easier to have certain animations only affect the top half of the body when chair pants are on? For instance, I would like to laugh without standing up from the chair, and floating above it every time I end a sentence with a question mark is also kind of weird.
Perhaps this should be a separate topic, but I'll see if floon responds here first.
