Passando por ridiculos

existe um detalhe muito ridiculo que acontece dentro do LOTRO, para nos brasileiros a um dificuldade, ja que, nao podemos falar em portugues em qualquer lugar, que ja nos reprimen e nos proibem de falar em portugues em alguns chats. voces americanos (jogadores) deveriam abaixar seus egos e começarem a aceitar que ,com o jogo sendo free, voces nao tem o direito de reclamar sobre outras pessoas falando em outra lingua que nao seja o seu ingles.
a ridicularidade chega ao extremos com GMs banindo jogadores por falarem em portugues em chats de troca, mundo... nao passam de um montem de mal perdedores, que nao aceitao que o jogo nao seja so mais seus, e caso vc ainda se achao no direito disso, abrao um serve onde so os brasileiros joguem para nao entrar em comflito com seus egos.

Sorry, but lotro in north america is geared to a mainly english speaking audience. If Brazilians want to play in Portuguese, perhaps acquiring a European client and playing on a Euro server would be a better solution.

The best way to combat this is to join region/language-specific kins...otherwise you're going to have to bend to the fact that the bulk of the world is English-speaking in some fashion and it's preferred when dealing with multi-regional groupings.

As an aside, considering the fact that this game is not localized to Portuguese should've been the first sign that speaking it would probably not result in like-responses, and it has nothing to do with egos.

FYI, we have a very versatile player base- English is not spoken only in America, but Canada (hello, hat!), Australia, New Zealand, Britain, and South Africa just to name a few official English speaking countries. Naturally there are several other places where people learned English as a second + language all over the world.

Secondly, this is an English-speaking game, at least NA's servers. As there is no way to moderate what someone constantly speaking in another language is saying, so it's logical that they would ask you to speak English. I would expect the same response if I spoke English on, say, a Japanese-only server.

OP: Banning players for using languages that are not supported is not something new to this game, and in fact, happens quite frequently. Simply put, it's usually because the GMs are not fluent in any other language. Avoid using it in public channels and you should be fine. I had a bunch of kin members who were fluent in French, being from Canada, and there were no issues with them speaking their native language in kin chat. Just realize that ultimately, the game was not designed with you in mind as its audience.

I speak Russian fluently, don't see me starting up conversation with fellow Russian speakers in the world across the chat servers. To put it bluntly, this is the North American servers and as such we speak English ROUND THESE PARTS. Now I'm not discriminating against the, ahem Brazilian Scourge, as it is sometimes known, but in fact against all people who do this. Don't flood the channels with your buddies speaking a language that perhaps 99% of the people looking at said channel cannot understand. Start a fellowship, a guild, or talk in private chat. Again, its not just (BR HUEHUEHUE), but all foreign language speakers. Hell, in my darker times I trolled EVE University with a bunch of Russians, it was a moment of weakness and I regret it, and have never done it again. So you know, don't be a dick and speak English. Either ask someone in regional chat (or wherever) once "does anyone speak Portuguese" (if you were able to navigate to this forum, make this account, you definitely know how to ask that) and if nobody replies, then don't flood the channel with your language. And if someone does reply, again, don't flood the channel with your language. Invariably it turns into a personal conversation anyways, so you are actually flooding the channels with garbage, and would be reported if you did it in English. I know, because again, I've seen it done with my own language.

TD;LR Speak English or don't speak at all :P

There are games, like EVE, that are not translate to other lenguages but there are chat channels for various lenguages. I know that we can create channels but for a new player this is very hard to know how it works.

To create a new chat channel, type in game:

/joinchannel NAMEHERE (for instance, Espanol for Spanish-speaking players)

To type into the channel, all you need to type is /1, /2, /3, or /4, depending on which number this channel is for you. If you have not joined any other channels before this one, it's /1.

And to leave it:

As I said I know how they works but for a new player it is very difficult, a new player should have a way to select a lenguage channel from the UI. IMHO...

This will never happen. Turbine made it very clear with our French speaking friends - There is only one language - American English. Do not be using other languages in game, in our forums, or asking any support from our employees in any other language.

We have a Brazilian kin - Vera Cruz on Meneldor. They use their native language in their kin chat. That is not a problem. Turbine does not hassle them. American English when they interact with the larger community.I have have grouped with them before as the odd American filling out a Vera Cruz group. Some of them chatter in fellowship chat. I am clueless as to what they are saying. The leader uses American English so we can work together.

Eve Online is operated by a different company - CCP based in Europe. Having lots of countries with all kinds of different languages nearby makes them much more open to non-English. I played enough Eve Online to see their game masters issue orders to folks in the normal channels. Switch to English. Or move to the channel for your language. Or have your chat privileges revoked.

One language to rule them all!

This game's native language is English. I would suggest you to use it always when publicly talking to other players, even as a matter of respect: Everyone here - French, Russians, fellow Brazilians and Japanese - just to name a few - use it as a tool to allow interaction.

When you use your native language in a public channel, you're excluding from the conversation everyone who doesn't understand it - and, if that's your objective, why not use a /tell?

p.s. - Your Portuguese also needs a bit of polishing. ;)

Not everyone can be accommodated all the time. It costs less to exclude Portuguese speakers than to train GM's to speak Portuguese, at least that is my guess. "It's not personal, it's strictly business."

I think the OP (oiaeuai) is complaining about the negative reaction of some players to him speaking Brazilian Portuguese to other Brazilians. If I'm correct, then those players are in the wrong. If they don't understand Portuguese, then ignore what he's saying.

I played DDO for six month when it went F2P and there were a fair number of both Portuguese and Spanish speaking players on my server. They formed their own language specific guilds and had just as much fun as the English speakers and coexisted without any problem whatsoever. Now and then a "alguem portugues?" or "alguien espanol?" would appear in chat, and would get a reply directing to the appropriate guild, or no public response but probably a private tell pointing them in the right direction.

Easy enough for non-English speakers to use a private chat channel to communicate. Just need to create one and make it known. Channels named PT or ES would be obvious choices for Portuguese or Spanish.

Edit: Read the translation and found the bit where he says people got banned. That does not sound right, based on my DDO experience.

I know all the arguments about the practicality of using English only on public channels . . . nevertheless . . .

This IS the 21st century.

It just feels wrong to be punishing people for using their native language. It should not be happening. Even accidentally.

The problem is we are only seeing one side of the story, which is against the CoC in the first place (not supposed to discuss disciplinary actions on the forums), so we are 'jumping to conclusions'. For all we know, they could have been saying stuff that violates the EULA. For all we know, they weren't. Either way, GMs are the ones who enforce the rules and it's even in the EULA that they pretty much have the final say for in-game things. An appeal can always be made through wherever that link is under Support (I know I saw it once or twice). If I were one of these players, I'd find that link and appeal if they truly feel they weren't in violation.

Oh, and Arbalister needs to stop hacking the forums. :p

Okay, I'm ashamed to say it, but that took me a moment to get. First I had to rifle through my memory of common forums posters to see if I could recall one named Jules or something similar. Then I thought maybe it was a Jules Verne reference?

I'm Brazillian too, and sorry. It's a North American server, where everyone speaks english. And I know a lot of brazillian players, and some of them are simply disrespectful. They start talking in portuguese in all channels, and if you just ask them to speak english, they curse a lot (in portuguese). Then, they get the ban-hammer, and cry foul. I'm sorry, but you were wrong in the first place.

I play in Landroval, and there's a brazillian channel. Join it (I think it's /joinchannel brasil). Try it.

I speak Portuguese and I, too, have heard some Brazilian players act disrespectfully toward English-speaking players. This is not about that, however.

I just hope a few people at Turbine appreciate irony: a MMORPG with an international clientele based on metaphorical fiction by a philologist - an academic who studies languages - about the threat that autocratic conformity imposed from above presents to basic human concepts like choice, diversity, dignity, individualism and cooperation, etc. - has a fairly strict, one-language policy. As practical as it may be, it is to chuckle about.

As a philologist, Tolkien largely built Middle Earth around the diversity of languages, not the other way around....
