Enhance Swimming

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but there are two things I'd like to see changed to swimming in this game.
1) Underwater Swimming. Turbine already knows how to code the ability within the game, as DDO has the ability and it is quite fun to swim under water for a time. Of course we have nothing to help us stay alive for large amount of times, but still it would be nice to see what is on the bottom of the water in ever swim.
2) Make swimming faster than it is now. DDO has much faster swimming, so it can be coded and it would make it less of a drag doing the quests in the same area as mentioned above.
Just a thought probably regurgitated over and over again, but still would like to see the change.

What sort of content would we put underwater? There wouldn't really be anything to *do* down there, and that makes it a bit harder to justify the addition.

There's nothing on the bottom. It's quite barren underwater, so it would be incredibly boring.

Frikin sharks with lasers on their heads, thats what the game needs. That'll get people to use the boats and stable points instead of swimming everywhere!

Well, for example Annuminas... Sunken scholar nodes, some kind of a quest (free someone trapped, search a dead body etc), enter an instance from underwater.

Nothing pressing, but there is a "cool" factor to it..

I know you're just joking, but Deagol didn't have fins :D You could argue that the entire story of LOTR started underwater.

I know where the OP is coming from since every game I had played before had underwater swimming. It just feels limiting to be stuck doing the breast stroke on top. After years of playing lotro I have gotten used to it.

I still get the urge to dive under the surface and explore once in awhile though, especially in Evendim.

I am full with CommoMP. I wanted to swim and dive in LotRO for a long time and i think it would bei technically not too hard to implement. Putting stuff/story/quests etc. into the rivers/lakes etc. will be much more work.

But for anybody having played DDO, WoW (the rest i don´t know) it is a great fun to go swimming and diving.

For me it would be one of the relativly easy to build-up hobbies that would interest surely more people than searching mushrooms or so.

There can be sidequests to look for lost treasures or boats. Nothing lore-breaking as sea-people or so, but the graphics of LotRO are so great, that in my opinion using the water and especially underwater would be a waste of possibilities.

There could be several traits for discovery/slayer being implemented as an example.

But i´m sure that was already brought up several time. But NOW it is a good time to look this thing up and consider the PRO/CONTRA for the playerbase.

Well, if Deagol found the One Ring, who knows what we could find.

One of the Palantir ended up underwater, didn't it? Maybe if we wen't swimming we could recover one of the lost seeing stones and fight a mind battle with Sauron... Oh wait, that doesn't sound like such a good idea, does it?

Well, maybe Sauron didn't recover the last of the seven rings in Dol Guldur and it's actually lost in the lake at the bottom of Moria. Then we could find it and become jealous and greedy of treasure and gold... oh wait, that already describes most LOTRO players.

Okay, so maybe we don't want to find anything that's lost in the waters of Middle Earth. I guess my vote will have to go with it being unnecessary or undesirable. =D

Tolkien's characters didn't swim very well.

Also, I was never a fan of DDO because of the underwater swimming, it caused many a party to drown just trying to safely get some where

The current implementation of LOTRO sounds exactly like the problem that Isildur had when he lost the ring. If he could only swim below the water perhaps the orcs would not have seen him and he would have escaped. Oh well, we're all restricted by the game mechanics!

The palantír of Osgiliath - which I think is the one you are referring to - is so large that two men cannot lift it, so no recovering there (more so if canon is clear about the "lost" state of such things)

To those who'd like to explore underwater - do you realize there is in reality zero visibility in almost any body of water in the game? :)

I've recently found a cave hidden behind a waterfall. No quest sent me, discovering the cave gave me quests. It was awesome. One of my favourite moments in recent months (other than the Wild Hunt story line).

Having the possibility of hidden caves, sunken wrecks, and lost treasures does add a certain quality to a world. I've since found myself nosing about behind other waterfalls wondering what else I may be missing.

I don't think that I would care for things rising from the depths to eat us like EQ2 has but I did enjoy the swimming (never really got out of the beginning section).

MoL, what about a Summer festival game in the Breeland Star Mere lake where we are aiding a bunch of youngsters who were being silly rafting/boating and got overturned (boat)/fell apart (raft) and as in the other festival mazes we hunt and fetch for the mishapees from the edges and bottom of the lake?

With maybe a Festival swimming deed that rewards us with an Under Water Swim skill.

Even if there isn't much to see on the bottoms of lakes I think it would still be fun and maybe the occassional "goodie node" can be ramdomly placed in some of the lakes for us to find as we adventure.

And maybe like the Fishing Hobby we can have a Fish Bowl Hobby for collecting little fishies from all over Middle Earth.

I would really enjoy having a big fish bowl on a table in my house with my collection swimming around in it.:D

Well the one ring was found underwater for starters!, Gollum swam up into the misty mountains looking for secrets, what secrets they were seems to be limited by your imagination. Go diving around any contemporary bridge or pier and you will find heaps of interesting stuff that was dropped, areas that suggest sunken ruins are Annuminas, Tharbad, Lond Daer, Moria, Osgilith, Belegost Nogrod + Beleriand, Numenor, shipwrecks , its a bit worrying that this needs pointing out.

The one ring was found underwater because it *wanted* to be found. All those other sunken ruins don't want to be found, they're just piling up all the stuff you get while staying underwater. It's unlikely that anything underwater in Annuminas could be still in any worthwhile condition, It's been underwater for a few thousand years. Scholar's nodes underwater wouldn't work either, parchment etc barely survives in above water, underwater it would be destroyed in days.

The problem when you start trying to use facts in arguements is when you start using some of them you should use all them, most of the ruins in Eriador range from 1500 years in Cardolan and 4500 years in Eregion, and all of them probably should be under 20 feet of silt, but what kind of a game would that make then?. If Orcrist and Glamdring can sit in a damp cave for 6000 years and still be sharp and shiny then im quite sure other sunken items can be as good as new aswell.

When I posted this thread I never thought I would see any responses, but it is good to see both sides of the story. Throughout the regions, we see half buried temples, lakes that look very inviting as well as the rocks that are underneath them. The real world is not only two dimensional and though this is not the real world, it should not be two dimensional either. There surely has to be something to discover under water, some ancient artifact, some beast that wants to rise out of it and attack us at a gate that can only be opened with a full moon and when you speak the word friend in elvish. I do believe that it is an area that Turbine has ignored, but probably on purpose. They haven't followed lore to the T, so why should this stop them. In the very least, please speed up the swimming at least. That can't be that hard.
Still, I happen to like to swim under water when I see vasts amounts of water to be swam in. It makes it a bit more realistic. If a person goes into a lake to swim, they don't just swim on top of the water, they go and explore to see what might be in the murky water underneath. Though it isn't mentioned in the books, I'm sure that they went for a swim or two once in a while and swam under water as well.

Orcrist and Glamdring are exceptional weapons made by the Elves. Sure you can find another one like this stashed somewhere on the bottom of Greyflood but you would have to know where exactly to "look" for it. You cannot exactly stumble upon such things.
