You know, it doesn't take *me* an hour to reboot my computer...
...and yes, I know that restarting MMO servers is probably quite a bit more involved than simply clicking "restart". But nobody's started a conspiracy theory thread yet, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling. The coffee's exceptionally good this morning.
Let's go!

I say they're going to sneak the word "soon" into all NPC dialogues.
:D

And to think, the servers are already back up.

So they are. Dang. I should have saved that lolcat for another day...

lol
And yes, there is quite a bit more involved than just hitting "restart". Unless of course they have a really good day and everything actually comes back up properly the first time. If only that would happen more... :D

My thought is is doesn't take long to physically reboot, but it does take time to restart all the services and processes in the right order, then verify that everything is indeed running properly. It probably takes alot less time, but they give themselves some fluff time "just in case"

Re: You know, it doesn't take *me* an hour to reboot my computer...
My work laptop takes about that long to get going in the morning. It's very annoying and a huge loss of productivity. I don't have admin rights over it, so I can't stop any services that shouldn't launch, and well, you get the idea...
My home computer takes about a minute.

Yes, I apologize for this. We said 9AM and we came back a half hour early. Sorry the messaging was wrong.

If you never seen ECC ram booting, the raid cards initializing and scanning for devices, the management remote card booting, etc.. it easily takes 10 minutes for our servers to reboot just to the loading windows screen.
Add on that exchange services initializing, and you get a full 15-20 min outage.

I work with these things every day. You are correct.
My guess is the person rebooting the servers has a checklist they must go through before opening the server back up. And the #1 rule when dealing with customers and server based software. You always always tell them it will take longer then it actually will. That gives you time to hopefully fix what ever went wrong before your window is up. Saves face if you will.

And to think you could have used that extra time more efficiently. Here are some suggestions for the next time, take notes, I am a professional.
Next time you find yourselves ready to turn on the servers before the scheduled time:
Get another coffee, from across the street, go ahead and put in a little extra cream, you're worth it.
For fun, run a power point presentation on an automatic timer and infinite loop. What's the presentation of? Just a bunch of pictures of socks.
For more fun, play office pranks! tape under the mouse sort of shenanigans.
Go to the office supply cabinet, take out all the boxes of red and black pens, and then switch the pens betwixt boxes! Oh the confusion you shall sow!
Now go forth young office warrior and meet your destiny!

Can't you hibernate your work computer overnight? That speeds up the startup process significantly.
If nothing else goes on, you have to cold boot only once per month when the Windows updates are spooled in.
Cheers Nan

That's the Scotty (Star Trek) rule - always tell the captain fixing the warp drives will take 6 hours, then when you get them back up in 30 minutes, you look like a frickin' miracle worker.

They would have been back even sooner if you hadn't scared all the hamsters with that cat picture.
