Petition: Remove the Orc Rude Emote

Last night a human woman was defeated near Tirith Rhaw.
She assumed the death pose while the battle raged on.
An orc ran up to her and did the rude emote, which was hip thrustiing, thereby simulating an oral sex act.

I was in vent with the target.
All of the women in vent at the time expressed a great deal of disgust.
They endure getting ganked, steamrolled, and corpse jumped on a nightly basis and keep coming back so these aren't wall flowers.
That just happens to be one emote that really generates level of disgust - and understandibly so.

I'm not interested in players getting banned.
The emote needs to go.
It can be replaced with something fun.

If the name is deliberately offensive, report it! If the animation can be deliberately used in an offensive manner, the same rule applies! Report it and ask for it to be removed. I will vote with the OP on this one.

We are allowed to complain about abusive or offensive names and have the other player's name changed.

So why should we not be allowed to complain and request the removal of an animation sequence that can be deliverately used to suggest offensive actions such as this?

LOTRO has always had a very mature player base, but with the advent of FTP we have gotten many less mature players joining our ranks. While I personally seldom PVP, I can see his point. And as this game has a much larger contingent of female players in its rank than most MMOs, removing an offensive animation is a reasonable request.

Well, to the hecklers: you obviously want or intend the emote to be misused. That says everything we need to know about you.

Good topic for an OP. There are always a few children (and I don't necessarily mean minors) around to spoil things. Rude is one thing. Sexually humiliating and demeaning is another thing entirely.

Given some of the responses it sounds like banning wouldn't be entirely out of line. I'm not real big on the over-sensitivity we're experiencing in places like America. However, the only way this happens is through direct intent.

One of the reasons I allow my 14 year old daughter to play LOTRO is because of the mature gaming community. Instead of the typical Everquest cover art featuring breast/bondage eye candy this particular game has always been about the story. I think that is one reason why we have the best community in online gaming.

The people who were disgusted were mature professional women.
The kind of people with disposable incomes.
Certainly not people I'd describe as thin skinned - they didn't start the thread, I did.

Remove the emote and replace it with something fun.
A Braveheart style waggle might be a good choice.
We can do better than Everquest.

You know, our games define us in a lot of ways. The way we play, the way we interact with people on the game(yes, there are other people playing those 'toons, you know, real people) and what we find amusing. So if one finds simulating a sex act on a dead/unconscious person amusing, well...that's pretty sad.

When we allow things like this to slide because "it's all in fun" then we're desensitizing ourselves and pretty soon that will bleed into real life.

Still funny? Or would you be offended on their behalf?

Would you be okay if I came up to you in the game and slapped you in the face over and over? Would that be rude or "okay" because it's in the game?

When we repeat rude behaviors in our games, eventually that will bleed over into our real lives.

I dont have a sis, and my mom doesnt play any sort of games lol

And as i said its a game, and yes i would be ok, since its just a game and it cant harm you in any way, think about it

Now if you rp i can see the point(but then again there are solutions, like log off and log in later)

They are monsters, maybe they are roleplaying. If you don't want to get corpsejumped or /ruded, then release.

The problem here is if you don't like his actions and they violate the T&C then report him. If she didn't like the actions.... try going to the rez circle instead of staying a corpse. Its a bit more fun. Otherwise, its a bit to busy out there to catch emotes like that. There are always going to be ways to make emotes and actions do what they aren't intended. The question is are you mature enough to move past others immaturity. As for young people playing the game, well to begin with it says that this game is not intended for children. Second, the moors tends to be a bit harsher in language and actions. I would not let my children play in the moors (if I had children)

It's an emote that is particularly distasteful to some here so replace it with something fun and unoffensive.

People don't want to be reminded of ???? while trying to enjoy a game.
Given that 1 in 4 women are assaulted at some point in their lives it seems very reasonable to remove it.

I know none of my female family or friends would care if it happened.

They are mature enough to know its just a game and would find it funny or just brush it off.

If you start going down the road of banning vague sexual references purely based off opinions then a lot of emote would get axed and you would also have to get rid of jumping and warg bites :P

I certainly understand the offense taken from what happened here, but..

I would submit that this is a case for an individual infraction . (possibly falling under this in the Code of Conduct? : "you may not exhibit or partake in behavior that is disruptive to the Game’s normal playability, causes grief or alarm to other players" . (The specific ban, in the code of conduct, on sexually explicit subject matter seems to be applied to the use of language or the providiging of links to material, not specific visual behavior. Hmm i dont know.)

How people choose to use in-game animations and abilities is not really controllable, except through punishment of the individual.

If someone really wants to be sexually offensive, badly enough, theyll find a way to do it, using any number of emotes/names/etc, not just the /rude emote.

You can't go removing anything that has the potential to be used inappropriately.

That emote, when not used in a deliberately sexually explicit way, may, to some folks just be a simple taunt to one's enemies, rather orc-ish and irreverent; fun and appropriate for their character type.

The fault lies in the actions of the player.
A penalizing of the player, who may have violated the code of conduct, should be the result.

to InnerPieces, you obviously make wild assumptions without real proof just to make a point. this says more about a person than being a little childish does.

ive never used the rude emote like this on an orc, but i dont want it to be changed either. its just something that really doesnt need to be changed. grow some skin.

i'm a little more principled than that - i dont run on subjectivity if i can help it. i would say the same thing i said above... grow some skin, its just a game. if you cant handle someone doing a rude emote on you without "being disgusted", there are other things you could be doing with your time.

Are there any non-sexual meanings for hip thrusting?
I don't see it as very vague - I'm pretty sure it means the same thing in every western culture.
From the onset it's representative of a sex act.
I don't think anything is being read into it.

We aren't talking about a vague gesture that is having additional meaning read into it.
From the outset it's only had one meaning and it's always been crude.

Unless you can give me the non-sexual connotation of it....

I see no place in this game for an emote that is an expression of sexual aggression, whether it is used/misused against another character or not.

The only time I've ever used the emote is when we've formed a V formation in front of TR and done it in tandem to scare off any burglars in the area watching us. Personally, I agree. It is the only emote that is explicitly sexual in the game and if an alternative emote was made then I'd be happy to lose it.

On the other hand, Monster Players have such a limited number of emotes with animations that it can be hard to let any of them go, even one like this.

And while the orcs and uruks have the most offensive /rude in the game (no one else has one that is truly that rude) they also have the best salute, bow, and kneel meaning they also wield the best respect emotes in the whole game. If you have a Warleader /kneel in front of your corpse you'll feel a lot happier about your performance than if you had just released. I guarantee it. /end_tangent

tl;dr I agree but want a new animation to compensate for the loss and Uruks/orcs have the best kneel, salute, and bow.

Some of the cool emotes introduced to PVMP in the last updates can be used to anger and insult people. Taking the fact that serious development time was put into these things, I can only say that all this is WAI.

Anyways, easy solution: release instead of spying. Problem solved.

The individual player that did this should have been reported, I imagine it is breach of coc, clearly the emote caused offense when used in this context. The emote is not the problem the player is.
