I'm getting an error message, something about failing to read authentication code, when trying to log in. Everything worked well yesterday, i.e. before the maintenance. Is it just me or are others having the problem?

Same problem here. Hope it works soon.
Maintenance going on atm.
Maintenance was supposed to have ended at 2 PM EST. No note on extended maint in the login screen, just that weird funky error message.
Ext. Maint is fine. But at least note it in the darn login screen and at least make the error messages make sense to people!

I should not have to go to an outside source, such as TWITTER to find out the game is still down. I should also not have to check twitter and/or the forums to find out whether I can even log in or not. That's what you have an in-game launcher 'news' function for. USE IT/UPDATE IT!Quote:
Our teams are still working on the issues but we still do not have an ETA for when the servers will be available. Thanks for your patience.
thanks, thought they were done
I am now able to log in to the forums but not the game.
Failed to read authentication response [err: unexpected end of file][line : 1][col: 1]
Or heck, even keep your cryptic, shoddy, error messages, and just add an addendum if necessary such as:
"Login server unable to be reached" or whatever is appropriate.
When I go to log in, and it goes all the way through and gets to my password, and then I get something like the above error message of Failed to read authentication response, common sense would say that was some kind of PW error. But having been on this ride with Turbine since 2008 or so, my 'Turbine sense' told me something was likely just borked with the maintenance.
Ye need to fix those error messages that are displayed to us actually make sense to the customer. Otherwise, why have them?
Understandable. Except that the launcher is up and working.
At the very least, update the launcher in ADDITION to your Twitter feeds, or whatever. Twitter should be an auxiliary means of communication. Not the first line of defense.
When I go to login and type in my password, I should not have to check your TWITTER feed FIRST to see if it's even possible.
If the launcher is up to date, it would save you guys a heck of a lot of negative energy.
Honestly, it's ridiculous. Own it.
With the Authentication server down for hours, it is normal ...

Uh, the launcher IS updated.

LOTRO Downtime Extended
Mon, 18 May 2015 19:44:45 +0000Today's downtime has been extended. At this time we do not have an ETA for when the servers will be available. We'll update everyone with any changes. Thanks for your patience, and we'll see you back in the game soon!
Sorry, Kaynith, your suggestions contain way too much common sense. Can't have any of that in today's world you know.
I barely follow turbine's goings on (after 8 years of this) but even I figured out what was going on without resorting to twitter (still never used this) just by doing a google search (lotro down). Was I supposed to scream and yell and throw things? :)
I don't think you understood him. Your client opens, but it's access to the database to give a new update on extended downtime is still under maintenance. You just have the last updated info, which was before the maintenance. It's like wanting to update a webpage that isn't connected to the internet. You could have it saved in cache and see the old version, but you won't get the new info till the server is back online.
I appreciate that they at least send info via twitter. Is it ideal that it's still down? Of course not. Is it nice that the last launcher message says there is maintenance today? You bet. If you can't figure out that it's likely longer maintenance issues when the whole last 12 hours couldn't connect b/c of maintenance issues...well, to each his own I guess.

EDIT: Frelorn beat me to it by a minute.
Something to remember and keep in mind is if you can't log into the Forum then Turbine typically can't either. So when that is the case there is no way for them to update the forum. You will notice that once players and turbine could login not only did players comment on login issues but Turbine answered pretty promptly. ;)
Funny how other companies manage to have separate logon servers for forum/accounts than for the game itself, huh?
