General questions from transerers

I would like to start a thread with general questions to the Laurelin server's people from world transferers. As eveyone know, the Turbine close many server, and this is one of the chosens that selected to survive. But I am sure, there is many question from the refugees about the server.

My biggest fist question is about the RP. I am coming from Snowbourn, that is a simple open server. My kinship plan to moving to this server, but many mates afraid because this server is RP server. But what means exactly that? There is rules about the character names? Or we must live in game like in real life, do not playing at night, etc? What is the rules, what means the RP and what is happening if someone brake the rules?
For example I am using a name that is not a "lore compatible", so anyone report to GM's and I got banned?

It is really important I think, because we have only one chance to transfer for free, and if we make a wrong decision we must pay a lot.

You get renamed, not banned.

I have no idea how Laurelin would respond to Bunny names.

If you want to make certain that YOU get to choose what name to change to:
create lv 1 characters on a couple of new accounts on Laurelin
name them Bunnybacsi, bunnyruna, bunnymagus, bunnycsimpi

This way, the names exist and your characters will get a free rename when they transfer.

It's already done that day when the Turbine posted my server will close :)
But I do not want to rename my characters! And I know many ppl who feel same, that's why I ask about the rules.

Laurelin is indeed the (english-speaking) RP Supported server of LotRO, but it is not required to role play, and even if you do, it is of course not expected to role play at all times (after all it would be far from realistic to rp everything the game has to offer). Many people have come over the years (and still do) for the more Middle-earth immersive environment and to avoid the out of Middle-earth names that are seen in plenty and often on other worlds.

As for the additional rules that Laurelin has, those are:

1. Names should be within the spirit of the setting, Middle-earth. This does not mean that they must have the right meaning or ending, but that they should be fitting names for the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Opposite examples of this would be: suuperman, Fishslapper, Rofltcopter, Pvpman, and so on.
2. Do not harass role play and rp events and people because they are role playing.
3. The say channel (mainly) is reserved for IC (In Character/role play) speech.

As for an account ban (or block from the server) that happens (as Turbine has written) in repeated violations of these rules.


But as you too may see, these additional policies are reasonable and easy enough to follow and it is good for all to remember that they are here for the good of the server, encouraging in this way a more immersive enviroment and preserving it (at least more than on any other server) So you should feel at ease.

There are some I think who would take exception to "bunny" names. It then comes down to the GMs and how they consider the names weighed against the rules governing Laurelin detailed by Erennor clearly in his post above.

I have seen some named players who I have thought would be changed by the GMs being viewed as totally acceptable and I have seen many changed in my time in this game.

I am sure, my character's name is not a Tolkien compatible names. Nothing wrong, just simple bunny+kind of class name. I just simple like to see, what is exactly that character from name. The Bunny is my well know name, so also I do not want to drop.
My kin leader plan to moving to Laurelin, so I must know if I use my free transfer ticket to L, what will happen. If there is any chance to a mandatory rename, with terrible sorry but I do not follow my kinship. So that's why I must need to know, I can use my names or not.

I can say my personal opinion, which is, there is no answer set in stone. It can happen that players report your names, or they will be seen as fine and you won't have to rename. If a player do reports your name, a GM will force rename your character. Sadly there is no guarantee about name reports. I saw some silly names in my time on laurelin that never got a forced rename, and some names who looked fantasy enough got a rename. It goes down to the common sense of who makes the report.

Only Turbine can answer your question as they are the ones who enforce the rulings if a name is reported to them. Possibly on rare occasions an in game master might see them on their travels. Although I have not seen a wandering GM since the days of Codemaster when they gave me and my companion free titles after a brief spot of RP.

I am not sure how you will get them to answer your direct question, so it comes down to you Bunny and if you wish to take the risk you might get name changed. Everyone here has just tried to give you as much information as they can to help you make your decision.

Nobody can give that except a Turbine rep. But I understand your legitimate concerns and so will say that, though I am NOT saying I will/would do it, I believe before long the Bunny names would be reportrd as non-lore compliant. I can't guess what the GMs would decide. But if those names are dear to you, I think you should weigh that against your love of your kinship, or lobby the kin to move to a server without name rules.

If you do come to Laurelin, a warm welcome, I hope you won't find things like name restrictions too constraining.

I'll be joining Laurelin from Withywindle and I was wondering about pet names. Does anyone mind if they include words from a language that is neither English nor one of the languages of Middle-earth? I know you have kin names in other languages.

For example, my Loremaster's lynx is 'la dame Blanche' , which is lore appropriate ('the white lady') but French. I don't want to join and then have to move again so I thought I'd ask.

hello! the naming policy does not extend to pet names, so your pets can keep the current name :)

My dwarf character is named Rjupa Rautwulfrsdottir - which is Icelandic ( = Ptarmigan Redwolf'sdaughter) and I have had no problems with that. But then Tolkien himself took many dwarf names from Icelandic, and Scandinavian names look right for dwarves in particular. Apart from that, if a name is initially barred, a small change in spelling can make it acceptable: 'Melilot' is barred because it is an NPC name, but the older English spelling of 'Mellilot' has been accepted. So if you don't mind a small spelling change, and apply a little ingenuity and patience, many names which are initially unacceptable can be adapted, and I venture to suggest that you quickly become comfortable with them.
