For Wadu - What decides the reply you get to that quest?

Volume III: Book 3: Echoes of the Dead - Chapter 6: For Wadu

In this quest you get asked to go slay as many Dunlendings as you feel is enough, and when you return to Wadu's father he will reply different things. For some people he says that they killed more than him, even if they just killed one or two, but for others he will say that he has killed more, no matter if they killed 1 or 300...

Is there something else that decides? If so, I would really like to know because I'm a completionist so I'm questing my way through the game, following the story just as the game sends me, so therefore I will be playing the same way on all my characters and will never get to see the other option :( If I knew what decided, I can make sure to change whatever I did wrong for the next character I play :)

Both my characters who are doing that quest gets the same reply from Wadu's father. One killed 2, the other killed almost 500 :eek:

I think he replies based on your deed log. If you've slain dunlendings, the game keeps track for the tier 1 and 2 slayer deed. On the other hand, maybe not. The game might have him roll and compare that number to your deed log's count.

But one of my characters completed both deeds after getting his quest, but still nothing :eek: And what about those who only killed one or two and still had killed more than him? Seems like something else decides, but I have no idea what it can be :eek:

Hmm, well, it might be random. Most of my adventurers have completed this. Most of the time he says that I killed more than he has, but often I only killed one or two after talking to him. A few killed more than one or two after talking to him. "Who knows?", seems to be the case here.

Yes, it might be random, you're right :) Though I can't help thinking that since you mostly got one answer and I have only gotten the other, it might be tied to something we did or didn't do :eek:

I don't mind if it's random, but if it depends on something I'm doing, then it'll be frustrating since I'll never see the other reply due to not knowing when and how to change how I'm playing :eek: Also, it would be nice to move on with the story, but I'm still killing Dunlendings, hoping to get a different answer from Wadu's father :o That sneaky guy!

Maybe someone at Turbine could tell us if it's random? :)

Probably depends on whether you're carrying Erebrandir's Horseshoe ;)

I was thinking it might, so just to be safe I had one of my characters wearing it and the other had his in the Vault but sadly they got the same reply anyway! XD

You only need to go kill 2-3 or so then the quest should update and send you back to the father. It has nothing to do with deeds or the horseshoe.

did it a couple weeks ago on an alt that has like no slayer deeds done. Only needed a few kills and the quest continued.

Sure, but what Silmelin's talking about is a 'color text' line that we get from Wadu's father when we go back to him to advance the quest, if I'm remembering correctly.

cdq1958 is right, I'm talking about the reply you get when you return to him :) He can say at least two different things: either that he has killed more than you, or that you have killed more than him, and I'm trying to find out what decides which answer you get :)

What he says when you report back to him is random, its either you killed more or less then him and makes no difference in the quest at all. It advances and sends you off to Radanir.

How do you know it's random? Have someone from Turbine answered this before somewhere? :) I sure hope it's random though so I can leave the poor Dunlendings alone *cleans the blood off the hills of Enedwaith with a mop* :D

Because no matter which answer you get the quest advances. There may be a way to trigger one answer over the other but either way the quest advances.

The horseshoe is claimed to change 1 line in 1 quest of the epic, maybe that's the quest. Main thing is to just advance the quest.
You can advance it or run alt after alt thru it to see if you get the other line and then advance it. :)

That quest and the looking for a boar quest in Evendim were just insidious lol. I was stressing out killing tons of bad guys and I was stressed out when my 30 minutes in Evendim ran out lol.

Just because a quest advances doesn't mean it has to be random :) For example you can choose if Halros stays or goes, and the quest text is different but it's not random :) I'm sure it's not very hard for those who make quests to add something like "if this is done, then this quest text will show, and if that thing isn't done, then this other text will show", I only want to know if that's the case this time or if it is truly random :)

And as I said above, this can't be the quest where the text changes if you wear the horseshoe, because I have the horseshoe on one of my character but not the other and they still got the same reply :) The story is what is most important to me so yes, I'm very carefully looking for that line as well! =D

choosing if Halros stays or goes changes many things further on the line. Things like who shows up in a given location for a quest.
Wadu's fathers quest changes nothing with either line of text.

But i know what you mean about stories-I have a couple different versions of the same book just cause they revised it even a tiny bit.
If you do manage to trigger the other text line please post it so others(and me) can read it too :)

For me, even a tiny difference in the text is a big thing! :D I even open the quest log to read the extra bits many quests have there that isn't told in the actual quest text, and also to read the descriptions on those quest items that go straight to the quest log when you get them :D

One other thing i noticed with the last alt i am running thru the epic, many of the NPCs will have something else to say after you accept the quest. I noticed quite a few that had the 'blue' ring and i talked to them again a couple times after accepting the quest and many had more to say furthering along the storyline :) then i would go and do the quest.

Yes, almost all NPC's get those blue rings with extra quest info! I read all I see! :D Sometimes even other NPC's far away will get a blue ring if you have picked up the right quest, because they will have something to say on the subject, that even though it's not needed to finish the quest, it's still an interesting bit of extra story! :D

All I can do is tell my experience. I've done this quest seven times. Killed the smallest number of opponents possible every time so that I could move on. I got a mixture of both responses.

I believe the game software does not keep track of the extras that you kill. The choice of which of the two text options is presented to us is random.

Maybe the seemingly random response is based on something like the first letter of your character name. :)

Seven times is quite a lot! Sounds hopeful that you got different results, then maybe I will too! Did you play all those characters the same way? I mean, did you do all quests on them or was there some characters that you did all quests with and other characters where you skipped lots of quests/areas, or did you play sort of the same way with them all? :)

You're probably right that the game isn't keeping tracks of the extras because I have killed 600 with one character and 2 with the other and they both get the same reply :eek:

Yes, maybe! :) Or maybe to the number that's associated with our characters! A pity this quest isn't early in the Epic book it belongs to, then I could have done some testing on Bullroarer by creating different characters and leveling them up through the Tavern and gone straight to the quest and see if they all got different replies even though they had done exactly the same things before :)

That's not it, although the text you get is in fact determined at character creation. I wanted there to be some variation in the results from character to character, but we're not tallying the number of enemies you defeat for this quest.

I was the same way with the boar quest! I think that when I ran one of the "In Your Absence" quests, I killed a boar and it told me to go back to that guy who wanted the boar steaks. It's been a few years though, so maybe I'm misremembering that part.

Oh! That's really interesting! :D Many of us have a tiny army of characters so it'll add a bit of extra flavour :D

And it's very nice to know that whatever reply my characters get is the reply they should be getting, and it's not because of something I did or didn't do, so thank you so much for replying! :D This means that no matter what I do, sooner or later I will get to see the other reply! Wohoo! :D

That's what I remember too, but its' been a while for me as well so I might be remembering wrong :o
