I like my character names. I would gladly give up every one of them if I could move from my NA server to an EU one. It would be really helpful if we could have a definitive yes/no answer on this in advance of the changes, please.

I like my character names. I would gladly give up every one of them if I could move from my NA server to an EU one. It would be really helpful if we could have a definitive yes/no answer on this in advance of the changes, please.
Here's an explanation as to why we can't.
Once upon a time, there was something called DSL, which gave the world terrible, yet useable Internet, but it was extremely slow, especially when the Internet server was on the other side of the ocean. So, when it came time to license Lord of the Rinflgs Online, Middle-Earth Enterprises decided to give the license to two companies. One was in the USA (Turbine) and one was in Europe (Codemasters). Forecasters handled their character database in a completely different way than Turbine did. They had a completely different filesystem on the servers than Turbine. Later, when everyone had moved on from DSL to much faster Internet speeds, Turbine obtained Codemasters' LOTRO servers and found Thatcher filesystem was completely incompatible with Codemasters', so it was decided that they would be owned by the same company, but they would forever be incompatible with Turbine's servers. The end.
I was hoping it would have changed. (Vain hope as I thought). People and circumstances change. I'm in Europe now. Friends are here. People I work with, socialise with and game with. I'm stuck on NA server where people I used to play with quit some time ago. Subscription is up for renewal next month and as I don't want to abandon 5 years of character development and start again, it's a logical time for me to stop and play other games with my friends here in the UK. When they play LOTRO I can have a night off which wouldn't be a bad thing :D
:) funny, you'll have to excuse the delay as this thread kind of tires me from all the naming BS people keep putting forth as such don't check it very often.
That said, I'll say this I play on one of the relatively tiny servers and those items go high in price, and I'm fully willing to match the prices other people put up, it's less about trying to be cheap and more about not loosing the item. Because some of the stuff i go for comes up very infrequently and you have to bid astronomically on some stuff (think walking man statue prices). Problem therein is that cash is so easy to come by and there are a number of ultra rich players all capable of sniping at the last minute even at prices that would be seen as asinine on any medium to large population server.
Case and point I know a person that has a toon on another server with 6000g on it, but he's so damned wealthy already he never transferred it over and hasn't touched that server in 3 years
So someone that has been on e.g. server A for 7 years, has been active for 7 years, plays every day, should be trumped by a "founder" who played heavily from 2007-2010, stopped playing, and then recently in 2014 decided to come back and pick up his level 65 from when it was the max level and play again, and only made 100 just recently because now he only has 2 days a week to play?
I don't think that only because your account is older or you paid for lifetime VIP in 2007 that you earn the right to come on to a server and tell an active player since 2008 that he/she will lose his name. It will not create a nice atmosphere when someone that has had a long history on a server but isn't a lifetime VIP founder, would lose his/her name to some incoming person that no one there knows, isn't even playing all that much anymore, but just so happens to have a lifetime VIP.
The problem with many lifetime VIP people is that they may have moved on from the game a long time ago, but can come back much more easily because there is a massive amount of free TP waiting, the account is lifetime, etc.... that doesn't mean that they are actually played for all those years.
In ANY situation where someone has established themselves on Server A and is active, someone coming from Server B and being allowed to take that name under any circumstance is going to cause problems. I have had problems with a name transfer when I transferred from Windfola to Riddermark in the past, where the name I had was in use by someone just recently, and I was sent tells asking I was back, even got sent a mail or two, and I had to explain: no, I am not that person, that person deleted their character or moved from this server, that's why I could take the name. If that starts happening to ACTIVE people, you will create a big mess that no one is going to be happy about.
Players coming TO a server should under NO circumstances be allowed to take over an existing, active name.
It is not that it COULDN'T be done from a theoretical point of view, it is just highly, highly impractical. I have worked for companies where their ERP system (financial systems in case you don't know what it is) were changed from one platform to another, and it took huge amounts of time and huge amounts of money. Downtimes of 1 to 3 weeks are not uncommon, they basically close the books in one system, lock everyone out of the system, and start the conversion. The differences in databases between the EU and US are of that type of caliber, they would basically have to shut down ALL systems, US and EU, for possibly several weeks, unload the database from the EU into raw data, and import the data into the US database. This can't be done live, the character databases will need to be offline. These kinds of processes could take days, if not weeks.
Besides the fact it is a HUGE undertaking, with a HUGE amount of information, every attempt to do this in the past has failed. They have done it in test environments, and I think some time in 2011 they tried to move a few characters that were in production, and they were lost. I don't think they were active characters at that moment or possibly volunteers, or what, but that is the story.
In short, it is going to be about money. The amount of work needed to do this is so enormous that even $100 transfers will never pay for it, and the downtime alone will lose them so much in business that it is simply not worth it. The amount of players have certainly gone down over the years, which is why they are consolidating servers soon so that the remaining servers will have a good population.
The only hope you have Mike, is to find a NA server with players that are in the same predicament, a NA server that might have a slightly higher population of Europeans. This you can check out for yourself, by making a toon on a server and checking things out. Use the social panel to see how many players are on at certain times on that server, of course the times you play the most, and pick the server that suits you best when it is time to move.
I'm in the SE US and I play on Laurelin with no problems. I'm not worried about latency issues after the move simply because I play SWTOR on an EU server with no problems, and their servers are also overseas.
I don't know what your situation is, and why you want to play on an EU server (for me it's because the people are nicer) but I can assure you that any technical issues are not noticeable.
Ok so I havent played in a year or so and jsut came back to find out that servers will be merged soon. The biggest complaint that I have seen so far is naming your toon on the new server and who will get to keep his/her name from the old server..
I realize this may have been brought up before ,but .. How about rather John... John Doe or John micheal doe.. any of these would likely solve problems . I have no problem giving my toon a second or even 3rd name to end all the confusion
thanks..
To my knowledge we have not heard yet, how Turbine will be addressing this issue. There have been many suggestions so far, but we have no idea what if any of those suggestions have been used. I am hoping that we hear about this soon, since it was hinted that we might be getting some additional information after 16.2 goes live (Monday 7/20).
excuse me? account barter wallet items only? better not be, i have 200 different barter items on one toon, adding up to over several 10,000 barter items (on top of mark, med, MC, shards), it better be all barter items on all toons. that hundreds of hours of play time. otherwise you will lose even more player base, including me ( over eight years playing). all because your too lazy to fix a correct currency transfer issue.
how about this, other games are doing it as well, upgrading all barter items to account, if you CANT fix it so all toon separate barter items (festival, Landscape, etc) transfer with us, change it so that all barter items are now account wide, not just MC, mark, med, shards, etc
Hello.
Why has some equipment that was Bind on Equip before Monday's patch suddenly changed to Bind on ACQUIRE? I have had things for sale in the AH, that I originally bought from the AH, that are now bound to a toon that is much too low to even use them.
- Why has the change happened
- Where is the list of ALL the items this has been done to?
- And/or is this a BUG??
Affected: Brandywine Server
Items so far: SOME Nadhin Medium armor (purples) that WERE Bind on EQUIP before update 16.2.
Please advise. Thank you.
This may be some sort of a cross-over bug because of Turbine add Bind on Acquire essence armor to the Ettenmoors. I checked the Skirmish camp, and you're right, all that essence armor is bind on acquire now.
Also, if you insert a Bound lvl 95 essence from the Ettenmoors into a Bind on Equip essence armor, it will automatically make it bound.
With the Miunas Tirith release that is foreseen to happen in late fall will there be a lvlcap raise?
I personally hope NOT but if yes I would not bother gearing my alts...
Balance in pvmp is Waaaaaaay of in the Misty mountains mans...... comming from the guys who asked what dude that satt behind Frelorn! Minstrel auto heal and some classes OP like hell. Guards/Ward/Mins/RK dps burglars who kill creeps in 2-3 hitts.......... Of course Defs got nice heals but nothing near freep side as usual BUT IM SAYING THIS WITH JOY not hate i dont wanna qq or complain but if Turbine want pvp crowd then balance if the way to go... Elder scrolls got more balance atm........
Are you playing ESO? I just came back from there for two rerasons:
Veteran Ranks
Champion system
ESO gave the best PvP experience I ever had but those days are gone for good. Champion system drains the whole ESO PvP experience down the hole.
LOTRO has a solid lore and class system but it looks like PvP just is a side activity notheing more (unfortunately). Instead of the new map they could have improved the old one and instead of Beorning(which I despise lore wise) Turbine should have added a new creep class like Angmarim warrior, Angmarim mage.
All characters on all worlds will receive a gift box as a thank you from us as a remembrance of the worlds we will be closing that hold so many fond memories for all of us. The Free Peoples' gift box will contain a Title Picker Box “Of <World> with choice of any of the 29 worlds, hooded and hoodless variants of a cloak, and a housing banner decoration. Monster Characters will receive the monster version of the Title Box “Bane of <World>” with choice of any of the 29 worlds.

Naming Priorities
With the new transfer process, when you transfer your character to a new world, the world will check to see if there is a naming conflict. If there is, it will grant the name to the incoming character if the character existing on the world has not been active for one year or more. The less active character will have a -1 added to their name and a rename token granted to the character. (Rename tokens have no expiration date.) This should prevent the majority of unnecessary renames for those transferring from the impacted worlds.
my bad, guess its alittle different than the title system :D
the way im reading it, there will be 10 servers that dont get cut, 5 US 5EU, Im freaked, imladris may well get the axe after all if theyre gutting 60% of the servers :O
