I was freaking out when I heard about this news but after taking a deep breath and reading I feel better now. I had flashbacks of Hellgate London and my lifetime subscription. :(
I have enjoyed this game from the first I played it and am still glad I invested in 2 Lifetime Accounts.
i have 2 lifetime subs. that is money now wasted i could of not played and waited for this to become free. i hardly even play now cause swg is still better with clothing and house decorating. and the rp. here it sucks you are limited in how you decorate your home.
i feel cheated money i spent now to be a waste when i could not have joined. 500points a month? until you know how much stuff cost that could be worthless. say you might need 5k points for an expansion or new items what not.
pipe weed still sucks has no meaning or benefit than just some fluffy smoke rings that are boring and most have the same ring.
it is not worth logging in just to get 500 points a month. i just should get em anyway since i paid for frakking lifetime meaning i don't have to log in at am in at all i can play when i want but to get bonus i have to have am in!! no no no that is wrong. it hurts those who are not able to but have lifetime but are in military or some other job that takes em away for months.
how about credit my money back on my credit cards lets see 199 for one account the other was 299 so that is 448 dollars plus expansion also i like to have back. since the game is going o be free and bonus points will be weak like swg tcg monthly free pack where i still don't get any loot from that, and that happens once a month. it reward those who will spend real cash and hurt those who cannot spend or already spent the cash for access to anything at anytime.
It sounds like you don't enjoy the game enough to have warranted a lifetime subscription anyway. And you DON'T have to log in to get the 500 points. The logging in once a month is for bonus points through the summer, that's all.
Read the restrictions for free play, it's a much different game than the one you play now and may continue to play.... for free... forever.
Wow. I was a bit concerned when I saw the email about the FTP model, but it looks like my sub has gained value, as some have pointed out. Thats awesome, and I don't feel slighted one bit.
I am a heavy MMO'er and I've played a great number of pay-to-play MMO's during the years. I haven't played LotRO much since I bought the lifer at launch, but it was reassuring that I could always have a game "just to play" and not have to use it as my second job. (As happens sometimes - like in WoW.) Also, I liked the idea of the game and the promise it held for the future. I have been able to play whatever I wished when I wished, and that was worth the cost alone.
Now, I won't even have to worry about xpacs anymore. I am a happy casual player!
1. I'm guessing the skirmish system was the practice for the grinding for points system. most obvious mechanic that would fit
2. they'll use the feedback from forums and surveys about what people would be willing to pay for, I'd bet. cosmetics, concierge services, buffs, content, etc.
Ok personally i am sad about the f2p idea, been playing mmorpg ever since i was involved in closed beta for Verant and the original EQ, i was with the game for 7 years and loved the feel and atmosphere. Played many online games since and none of them until LOTRO compared to the quality and feel of a mature comunity and the feel that you really do work for your items.
ive been on a few free to play inc ddo and the atmosphere is totally different nothing compares to the family like atmosphere you get on brandywine and other servers..
It is a cash cow move of course it is, iam in business too and understand why... but i really was shocked that they are doing it with LOTRO.. some things i forsee which may happen if they do not do this right which will destroy the community and atmosphere with this fabulous game.
1. L3wt players will roam!! if they offer raid kit to buy on the shops for cash via tokens then we will get the "sorry mate you need to own such and such from the shop to join our fellowships or raids" this will eventually lead to Kins of elitist attitudes.
2. Advertisement city .. its a cash cow bu this item and become blah blah... will be on banners its in most free play cash to buy items games... will destroy the atmosphere and it wont feel like running through Rivendall it would be like going through cash and carry!
3. Crafting .... if the shops have potions then all that gold spend on getting supreme master for scholars and if food is sold same goes for cooks.. will destroy both of them crafting trades because for some its easier to get out the credit card and buy tokens if they dont have the gold on the players.
4. The sense of achievement will become belittled.. myself took a while to get to 65 on my guardian enjoyed ever aspect of the game work harding for my items.. once i finally got to moria and mirkwood i felt i earnt the skirmishes that came with it and raids etc..... now!! hey got the tokens sure buy our way in.. if they dont control this that will ruin this aspect of the game.
5. not going to speak about the mature atmosphere being destroying by spam shouts in ooc or my mum could beat you up hobbit coz shes l33t kind of talk which WoW is full of and nearly most f2p games.. lets hope it doesnt happen or they control it big time with warning and bannings.
Also the subscribers who pay monthly.... i could not afford the lump sum for lifer but i pay every 3 months my subs and will continue, eventually we pay more than a lifer to play this game i hope they remember that too.
Anyway not really ranting sure i am upset by this change, i do not post very often i prefer to play not post.
I just hope they take a very serious look at the business plan from all areas before going forward.. the bit i am angry i suppose the most is i was waiting for the new content and was hoping for that announcement but too see we wont get an expansion for eon's is not very cool at all.
So... I see a common theme here. There are people who think that any given 12 year old will be getting the same benefits as a lifetime subscriber. While some of these posts have many words... some of them large, I still have to question the reading comprehension of the authors.
The only things that lifetimers will have to pay for are full Moria or Mirkwood style expansions. Not quest clusters, new regions as part of book updates and the like. Just expansions. Any given F2P player will have to either subscribe, grind to 50 (and still not get past the Hollin Gate) or purchase content individually. I don't know what world that having to pay for everything is the same as not having to pay for anything.
The two concepts are not even remotely the same.
I just do not get how people do not realise that the fundamental shift is not related to what we get, how we get it or the unlocking of content. The difference is that F2P and subscription MMOs always have and I am wagering always will have a completely different feel. Accordingly, what you do or do not get is irrelevant when you sign on to play an MMO in a certain atmosphere and it suddenly announces it is going to something substantially different.
People don't realize that the biggest impact is going to be the complete destruction of LOTRO's legendary high-quality community (as far as MMO's go anyways). Sure we have our x-amount of jerks per server, but LOTRO since day one has had an unrivalled reputation in regards to its small, but high-quality community. This reputation was widely acknowledged across MMORPG forums and the game's community was a breath of fresh air to people comming from the cesspit communities of WoW, AoC and....F2P games.
Now that very community is going to be invaded by hundreds of thousands if not millions of players looking for a cheap MMO, freeloaders, kids too young to have a credit card etc etc. You know how it goes. Throw up all the smoke and mirrors you want Turbine, but the once-great community is going to become a drowned out and completely irrelevant minority to the point of no longer realistically existing. To hell with your measly VIP perks. Keep them.
LOTRO's main community will be the F2P crowd and therefore destroyed.
the fact is i i liked the game and bought 2 subs but i still shouldn't have to log in for the summer bonus. i am a subscriber i should get that and retroactive as well. hell i should have 5k store credits when this goes f2p but i won't and stuff i have to buy will cost more than what we get.
i rather have that 448 bucks they took give it back and i can leave the game i don't want to play a game that is gonna be free. even if it is limited i can farm at least and not have to lvl or spend money.
not everyone has money to spend on loot bags etc etc they add all the time where a sub let us have access to that. give me my refund i need the money back.
Ok, I'll try to make sense of this. You are getting bonus points anyway because you are a subscriber, and you are getting bonus points for being subscribed for X years, yadda yadda, and you're upset that you have to log in for a little MORE bonus points?
As a subscriber, you will automatically be VIP and will not HAVE to buy anything from the store because you will already have access to it.
I.. don't... understand what you're saying about loot bags or farming. Sorry.
They're not.
Nope.Quote:

You're right... that was a terribad post... however, you are the one moving goal posts and failing to actually explain what your issue is. First you base your complaint on other F2P games... which are markedly different than how Turbine does F2P, then you say that its DDO you are referring to... and then you make nebulous remarks that indicate that its the "culture" that you are afraid will change.
So, if you have an actual, tangible complaint, please explain it, because some of us would actually like to understand, but you fail to clearly state what it is.
Will servers change? Will our characters be ported and have to be renamed?
I have 2 founder lifetimes, and this change appears to rock. Because I havent had anything to spend my money on, and Im sort of a shopper. Like I have 3 upgraded Guildwars accounts. You can buy outfits, and storage panels/bags etc...
But Im worried because I have some really premium names.
I will not have to server-port and compete for names again will I? As I will never get this many great names again.
Something we "lifers" especially founders need to think about, especially those crying for their money back ... My money has been spent and spent well. Over 3 years ago I dropped $199 on my account, then I played ... for 38 months. I'm well past my $199 cost, coming up on double that at founder monthly prices.
I got my money's worth!
Now, I agree that this is going to change the atmosphere of the lower levels. But I also see it as a chance to get those couple of friends and family members that I haven't talked into an account yet, to play for free until I get them hooked and they are ready to become paying members. No more "Hurry hurry, see as much as you can in 10 days!", they can play a day here and a day there until I have them hooked.
So the way I look at it ... yeah I helped get this game off the starting block, but I'm NOT special, I'm not deserving of extras just cause. I appreciate the fact that Turbine treats me that way sometimes, rewarding my loyality, but to be honest ... the monthly subscribers are far more valuable to Turbine then I am, they bring in revenue, while I take up server space.
So thanks Turbine for remembering us and giving us a little something for having been lucky enough to have gotten life time memberships. In return, I will try and convince, through my words and actions, these new F2P players to join the paying community, rather than trying to make them feel like second class citizens.
I am sorry. I fear your complaint is completely valid. However, I have posted my real issue about 10 times today and accordingly it is easy to forget that of course the current reader is likely not appraised of my view of things. Lots of post in lots of threads today. I apologise for not being clear.
Personally I have played many MMOs and I have found to varying degrees that the element that was most important to me was the community aspect. I am unfortunately a unsteriotypical anti-social MMO gamer who has moved between many game until I found the spot where I felt I could unload my social stresses from the work day and get some cheap entertainment. The least favourite games I found along the way were your average F2P MMOs, and unfortunately DDO was largely amoung them. I loved the 'select' society and generally mature aspect of the LOTRO MMO player base. Based on this I bought a lifetime membership to this MMO and was looking forward to a couple years of fairly healthy stress releaf based around a pre-selected mechanic and environment.
Today I find that that environment is due to change drastically. I don't deny that it may be better in the long term - ie in another 5 years this may have been inevitable, or that this may increase the amount of development money and make the whole game progress better. Either way it has essentially ruined the most important element I was seeking as an overpayed and under entertained North American in this market.
I am not saying this is not the best thing for LOTRO. This may even be the best thing to happen to MMOs. However, this is definitely the worst thing that could have happened to me as 1 MMO subscriber.
EVE Online is an option though right? Lots of hype about community, already conquered the F2P demons, and geek spreadsheet worthy. Alligances may be transferred.
too bad then; if i can fight for it i will do what i can to make it happen; as choice for who wants it of course; nobody said that you gotta accept it (like you can play n any server that you like....go read the posts in 2007 about the official rpg server, in case you forgot the war that happened at that time)
Is not a matter of segregation or elitists; if you buy stocks or make investments you know the difference between who buys 10 stocks and feels like the king of the world, and who invest and finance groups and startup companies to see them take off, and then getting back their investment plus the interests....lifetime members bought huge amount of stocks at 2 bucks, betting that it will go up, and indeed it did; while now a new company buy our fav company and they give back our 2 bucks per share, gives us a thank you and ask if we wanna be honorific members with no decisional power.
As gamer i do not expect you to catch the metaphoric concept behind my words; I just accept the fact that you are happy with what they decided to do with this game, and i expect that you will do the same for all that see things in a different way; just listen; nobody asked you or forced you to agree; just expressing an opinion :)
for the same reason that if you have 100 people and 2 of them are gold spammer, when you have 10K people, 200 of them will be gold spammer now, or even more, since you don't even have to put money upfront to buy a subscription; and in the worst case they close your FREE account and you open another one...can't find easier words to explain a scary concept like this one....it won't resolve the problem, just limit it to an acceptable level.
AS already said; depends from what you can do with these points; nobody is paying you because you are giving feedbacks, filing bugs, giving a model of the average player that are worth much more than money (check how much spammers and survey companies pays to get your data, or to buy your data from other companies; you will be surprised).
This sounds like the concept of who gets the discount card at Safeway, and say that he saves money, without knowing that he is giving to safeway his entire history of purchases, making happy the various food and goods producers ;)
Anyway, I am not saying that i have solutions, I am just expressing what i see; so there is no reason to take it as if i wanna be the troll starting a flame.
Guess that you expressed exactly my concern, A+
The other issue here is that nobody wants their money back; I played not too much but i enjoyed the past 3 years, so to me is not a matter of asking money back; but to be shielded by the mass of people that will ruin this community; this doesn't sound as a crazy request i think.
No way in hell you will be able to use the LotRO store to BUY your way past any VIP or any other player of this game. Nothing is getting sold that gives an in-game advantage. Unless of course all those cosmetic items will allow you to defeat any boss in game.
I will be saving up my points to pay for expansions and things like the last Adventure Pack. Possibly for additional shared storage.
I did not read all the pages of this thread. I am only going to post my own response to the announcement today.
My husband and I have 3 lifetime accounts. We also have paid for 3x Adventure Packs to receive Mirkwood, and even paid for a kinship name change once. All these things we felt were worth the cost.
We still feel it was a worthwhile investment after this announcement, and in fact are happy to be receiving points monthly at no further expense. We'll use our points on cosmetics and perhaps consumables, since we have no need to buy content. Based on DDO store pricing that should let us get a two or three items each every month for free. Cool by us.
Now we do hold a bit of concern over what the influx of new players will do to the longstanding community, but in the end, you choose who you hang out with and group with. We'll squelch any bums we come across. ;)
We've been on hiatus from the game for the past few months, but tonight we discussed resuming our regular play when F2P rolls out and starting new characters. Meet new people, check out new guilds. It'll be a fresh start.
That's this lifetimer's 2 coppers. :)
