A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...
I was an altoholic long before I started playing MMO's. I gathered up names in MUD's as I went. A couple were names of ice hockey players. One is a nickname for a class in daoc. But mostly, while needing a new name I went here. I had to look it up but this is the place, and I actually used to know how to use it. I think it is probably possible to use the variables in character creation and insert into a home made 'formula' and come up with hundreds of names, most not so good, from which you can choose something suitable.
That being said I currently use part of my 'kin name', that is the name the kin uses to call me, in mules and crafters these days. That name I came up with in beta. ...
There was a guy who would spam ooc (I think) asking for wood of rohan. Silly to think this guy wanted anything other than rowan wood. As much as we tried to tell him it was rowan not rohan (cuz we werent there yet) He kept asking for wood of rohan. If you are on Arkenstone you may have seen me on world chat. Her mother couldn't spell... Its a long story, that is not in my bio.
Despite the look of it my first character name Ishtari was not inspired by LotR. Ishtar was the goddess of love, war and fertility in several cultures and one of my favourite bands had a song about her. I liked the image of Ishtar in that song and thought it would perfectly fit my black haired huntress. However in Russian language female names typically end with '-a', so I tried "Ishtara" and the name was not available. Then I made "Ishtari" simply for the sound of it. Somehow when I was creating my huntress I completely forgot about the Tolkien's Istari and realized it too late...
Later for other alts I was simply taking the derivatives of this name because my friends already knew me as "Ish" or "Isht". I also shifted the original name from my hunter to RK at some point. Apart from that some of my alts have alcohol related names. Names Cabernetta, Merlotta and Rossese are inspired by the wine grapes, my beorning's name Medovinus is based on the Slovak word for mead, medovina.
I go by SapienChavez on all game sites (xbox, steam, playstation, nintendo, gog, and others), so i tried Sapien first and got it! (it is usually taken, if im late to the party)
when i came to lotro, my buddy told me Captain would fit me best. I go to make the char and my only racial option was, Race of Man.
it all came together perfectly...
i recently moved from Brandywine to Arkenstone and was able to usurp the name Sapien. now i gots it on two servers!
ps- at least nowadays no one sends me tells asking if im "him" when ingame. couple of kinnies still tease me about that one. also glad i never got the name-change-hammer dropped on me for that. but hey, i had the name first and its pretty easy to prove how often i use it (go to any of the sites i mentioned above and see how many "years of service" i have)
pps- the actual origin of my gaming handle is a long one... and i doubt you really care!
I use character names that I used when playing D&D. Dunford, Derabourn and Dalin are examples.
Also, when I first started playing D&D, I was navigator of a ship and used celestial navigation for Atlantic transits, so I became familiar with and used the names of stars. Some examples are Draconis, Sabik, Eltanin, Adhara and Markab.
Of course, nowadays navigation is a cheap and easy GPS device.
(No the ships were not made of wood when I served).
My first character got the same name as my first character in WOW (which was the name of a D&D - old school pen and paper D&D - character I was playing when I started playing WOW). I have a couple of others that came from D&D characters I was playing at the time I named them. For Elves I google Elvish/English dictionaries online. For hobbits I used Gaelic names of flowers and plants, as Tolkien described them as 'vaguely Celtic' at one point. On my two humans I named one with a Gaelic name (out of hobbit, er, habit), and one I just named with a fun name playing on her class and a book title. My dwarf is Fis, which is a variation on the only female dwarf named in LoTR.
Thistle Grey has been in my role playing family for nearly 20 years and I took that as mine into Perfect World. When I finally wised up and dropped that dreck to move to LOTRO the name just came along. For alts I decided to use plant/flower names with the 'Grey' attached. Some I have translated into elvish though only for the RP servers.
i named my beorning.......
Beornmark
im very surprised no one took it before me
My first character in any MMO was in Asheron's Call Beta - Roberto. When AC went live, someone beat me to it. So I named me Roberto the First, just because I really was first - he just logged in to live before I did.
I've had that as a forum name and a char name in every Turbine game since. Other chars, I make things up that match the race of the char I'm building. Not sure what I'm going to name my DDO gnome, tho :)
Some of my mules have had goofy names though, just to be goofy. Like "Closet" :)
I always want my characters to be part of the setting, so I naturally chose them to have lore-related names. I started in Snowbourn and with the move I took the opportunity to rename 3 of my characters.
My main is a man minstrel from Dale. I followed the recommendations, and tried Theodwald. It was taken so I tried the cool ending -ric (some visigothic kings also had names ending in -ric), so I got Theodwaldric.
For my guardian dwarf from Erebor I tried the combo of Eindir, but it was taken. So I tried Einsdir and it is his name.
For my man lore-master from Rohan I tried Eohelm, but it was taken. Because it's also from the northmen kin I used the -ric ending and I named it Eohelmric.
For my hobbit Stoor burglar I tried to get a simple hobbit-like name. I thought of Rogro and surprisingly it was not taken.
For my dwarf rk from the Blue Mountains I used Drakhorin, I think it is cool and dwarfish (as it should be).
For my dwarf champ from the Grey Mountains I came up with Thrordrim, I think it fits very well into a dwarf name too.
For my beorning I tried the suggested combo of Forn- and -beorn to get Fornbeorn, and suprisingly it was not taken. The low number of beornings likely helped to get that name :D
My man captain from Gondor was once named Fathomir, and I didn't like it very much. With the server move with the help of sindarin-knowing forum people I chose Tinnuvegil as his name, "sword of twilight".
My elf hunter from Mirkwood was once named Atlanor. I also changed to "shadow free/free shadow" in sindarin, Daelain.
Finally my elf warden from Lindon was once named Linwethir. I also wanted to give him a proper sindarin name and went for "sea gull look", Mylthir.
On my first server I had:
Tiragorn (m, elf)... yeah I know, pretty lame.
Atinuvel (f, elf)... a mashup of Tinuviel.
Then I switched servers to an EU server;
Inuvir (m, man) - made up (dunno if I used a bit of inspiration from generator)
Atinuvel (f, elf) - another one
Elgileth (f, elf), another name I just made up
I have a couple more basically un-played characters. My favorite name of those is Plysthia (also just made up).
Naming is the longest part of character creation for me, since I go through a lot of possible names. I just say a bunch of different syllabes that sound okay and mash them together until they sound suitable.
Generally I tend to try to come up with names that will fit the setting but a couple of the names are transplants of characters I've had back in the day when I played Ultima Online.
Here's the run-down of my 100s on Arkenstone:
The Elves:
Trelrandir Eloabereth (my main)
Venrilathan
The Dwarves:
Thralok Irondelver
Dralok Stonegrabber
The only Hobbit:
Faromond Stoutfellow
The Men:
Aulindyr Sundrel
Tharsus Algeers
Ieloch Ostgarten
Endilhelm Drathoe
The Beorning:
Kolbret D'Anduin
There's also a smattering of lower level characters like Glaervon and Harathanor (elves), Gordiadoc (hobbit), Myriae (human), and Gralok (dwarf)...and a few others.
you could always use a lotro name generator. These are just a few I found with a quick Google.

My first two were Dranoell and Dranoelle. Dranoel is the main character in a novel I am writing and many people online know me by that name. Unfortunately, Dranoel (one "L" ) was taken so I added an "L". Then When I decided to experiment and see if female characters get more in game help and if I would play it any differently, I started Dranoelle. Both Champions.
My third and fourth toons were Elleoelle (hunter) and Ahroeffel (RK). Tried to use LOL and ROFL but they were rejected as obscene. (seriously?)
Next came Koula (Burg) and Anishka (Ward), named for my GF at the time.
After that came Doombunny (dwarf, Guard in rabbit mask) and Bunnyballball. Doombunny is a reference to a D&D (paper and dice) character I had a LOOOOONG time ago. Bunnyballball is a reference to The Bruce Willis movie, Hudson Hawk.
Then came Miraluca (hunt). Named for a npc in KotOR. and Caspians (Cap) named for my competion pistols.
Recently I started Zif (Champ) a take on the warrior woman in Thor. Saywen (LM) Say when. And Zerofret (mini) Zero fret is a design element on some guitars.
I've had tons of other ideas for names but never got around to them til I forgot what they were. :P
9 years ago I spent hours daydreaming at work of what names I'd pick when the Lotro servers came up on day 1. I painstakingly picked an Elvish sounding name from my ever-increasing list for my hunter, and then a hobbit-like one for my burglar. When the servers came up the night before they were due online, there was much excitement - I'd be one of the first to pick names! Despite that, the hobbit name was gone already - I couldn't believe it! Spring had to be shelved, and I plumped for my second choice of Blaize, which I've used as a toon name ever since. Elredhiel (the hunter), bless her cotton socks, got deleted a few years ago in favour of making a hobbit clan of characters. All of mine are thought about and almost all originals, apart from Ellorien - which I thought was original until I re-read WoT and realised it's actually a character from there. Ah well :P
When Withywindle opened I logged on as soon as it came up to claim the following names: Ivo, Lorelei, Beatrix, Persephone, Pandora, Amelia, Aloysius, Cicely, Otterly and Donimo. Played Otterly (RK) to lvl 33 or so but went back to Laurelin. +10 rep for those who know the significance of the names (not using google).
Interesting, knowing you every name has a strong connection with something you like, music maybe or literature :)
I think about Beatrix Potter when I see 'Beatrix' ( probably wrong )
Lorelei reminds me of an old song by the Scorpions
And I am completely clueless of the others ;)
As for myself Amorey is a name I have been using for my main avatar in different games , it makes me happy and over the years it has also become the name I use as an artist :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnFlx2Lnr9Q
'Amore' means 'love' in Italian and I have chosen this name because I was born there
Another name would be my surname i came up with "Finnberry" i thought of the name from a book i read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and mixed words to come up with that surname :)
Just a nerdy fyi: Qenya generally isn't used for lore reasons, as i discovered when asking for advice from linguists in the fora. There was a great thread 'naming your elf' that explained reasons and helped with sindarin composites. The elvish name generators tend to produce gibberish due to difficulties with compounds.
Having said that, my first, Indros, was from the lotro name gen. He was played for about a week and then moved to bree after taking an arrow to the knee. My second and main minstrel, Peralda , is the elemental ruler of air in western magical tradition and alchemy and i thought suited a minstrel, reflected my interests, and sounded nicer than the names offered on the character creation screen as all the sindarin ones i knew in LoTR had long gone. Peral is actually sindarin as is Perlor...which i lost in the transfer...Per means half.So there is also Perfain and Perchillif. Then there are the Tinnu somethings.Which are all correct sindarin compounds after getting help from the linguists here.
Later i discovered that Peralda is the name of a turbine fan manufacturer...how ironic!
in sindarin i didnt know hows it with suffix merging when first word ends with n letter and second word is male suffix dir (as i see something like S. dîr¹ [nd-] in dictionaries which i dont understand)for example will grammatically correct Berenir or Berendir?
back to topic however, when naming my characters i tent to use languages semingly proper to them like old english to rohirrim (seems partially working on beornings too,but here i am mixing old english and old norse),sindarin for elves or gondorians (tho havent ever before used this male suffix element).
well with high elves coming i am tempted to use quenya for naming him (high elf cappy if possible) also since i recently returned after months of absence maybe i will run also a man race cappy to compare and name him in quenya too (inspired by names like isildur, elendil, elessar, etc).
"High elves" use Sindarin names mostly. Quenya was forbidden by Thingol, his folk didn't use Quenya and the exiles used Sindarin too, Quenya became a scholar's language. Even Galadriels name is the Sindarin version of her Telerin epesse. Since the high elves ingame will be descendants of the exiles, they won't use Quenya in every days life
