Disappearing floating object names.

Just in case this helps:

It only seems to apply to quest objects, at least for me. The most recent example from playing in the last day or two would be the Isengard expansion quests (I play on Anor) where you arrive in Galtrev, and among the quests you are doing you are requested to find missing nails and pick up staves to make spears.

In both cases, the nails and the staves that you need to gather in both quests are graphically visible (as in they "glow" as a quest object), but there is no name. When you press "DEL" the name appears if it is the closest object, so it is not a hindrance in completing quests..... its just that the nails are sometimes hard to spot, so I keep pressing DEL to find them.... As I have moved on from that area to the next, and I haven't seen any new quests (yet) requiring me to pick up things as needed in those two quests, I cannot with certainty say it is happening with all quests, but these two quests I have only very recently done, on the Tuesday evening after the patch.

To clarify: I have no problem with other objects that have a floaty name, such as crafting nodes, training dummies, workbench/forge/study, etc, etc.... it seems to be isolated to objects that you have to interact with as part of a quest.\

EDIT: Oh I just remembered, I made it to Tal Methedras and this quest also affected:

- Plants to pick up glow but no name.
- Grinding stone glows but no name.
- Armor glows but no name.

Finally, I made it to Dunbog not long after and there is this quest:

Collect Bog-Reeds. The Bog Reeds glow like any quest object but have no floating names.

Yes, it seems to be limited to quest object. I've noticed the same with the recipes you have to collect for the Ale Association quests, the recipes sparkle but have no names - good example is the one in the Watch Office in Brokenborings, you can see it on the table but it has no name until you interact with it in some way.

Also, I picked up a quest in Dingarth in the new area earlier "Supplies for Achad-In-Edhil" and one of the supplies is right next to the quest giver. It lit up as soon as I took the quest but the name didn't appear. The salve you have to pick up for Cirdan is the same. There's one right at his feet - lights up, no name.

Collect 12 mud balls.

The mud balls have no name, but look like this:

When you press "DEL" (or click on the object) the name appears.

Consider the festival dwarf drinking race. There is another quest in there to pickup various item around the place. I kind of assumed there was a different mechanic in play for these items so you wouldn't "see" them so obviously. It has always worked like that.

Given that there are two mechanisms, could it be that this particular version has inadvertently been assign to a load of other quest objects. Or some edit means some parent behaviour is now being exhibited? I have only had to pick up some stones and planks of wood on my questing, no issue though.

Material nodes are not the problem. I too have noticed that since this update, that floaty names for quest objects are not visible, unless you use "select" key, in my cases DELETE.


OH and NVM I now see what you are saying.

Every quest object on landscape in the new areas has no floaty name for me. The workaround of "delete" is ok for things that are meant to be tough to find (like treasure caches etc) but having to run around hitting the delete key as often as my skills has been very annoying. I was trying to find a small salve the other day, and was experiencing a bit of lag. When the lag cleared and "DEL" worked, I was standing right next to the thing. I hope it's fixed soon.

An easier and more effective and efficient workaround is to press N, get the message that Floating names are off, then N again and get the message that Floating names are on. That at least puts all floaty names for objects within a vicinity on again. Not sure how far, but seems to be either by region or as You cross over some invisible barriers and it dissepears again. So with intervalls as You move around/travel press N Twice, just to make sure. Still better than the "delete" key workaround, as with that You only get one object and need to toggle between objects and not a far reach on it either, but yes it is very annoying either way.

Felt obliged to check out the Avabarg daily instance for the first time since the patch. (300 motes: are you kidding me?) I do now see what others are seeing, or not.

To me it looked very much like what I see on the dwarf race instance, the objects with sparklies and no name until selected. Except there was the odd one object with it's name on show as normal.

I didn't faff about with the N key just got on with my normal tabbing for nearest target and my ; ' combo for "next object" cycling and "use". Imagine it's a nightmare for name clickers, festivals must be a real grind as you are beaten to every objective. The Avabarg instance is a tricky one for the key selection of objects because it will select objects on different levels, is why I chose it to test, but the mini map will show you where the object is in relation to your character but only if on the same level.

This thread proves the point that a Bug Forum would be so useful rather than /bug that has at best a one to one conversation, when it works.

Not just Quests, Deeds are also affected.

Yesterday, two of my junior alts went thru the Old Forest looking for the Flowers of the Old Forest. No labels.

Annoying but as this was probably the 7th and 8th time thru knew what to look for.

Now for god's sake don't screw up the sparklies.

Regarding deeds: Pages of Lost Lore don't seem to be affected. They don't blink.

This just happened to me with the curiously empty webs too. Only one that I found had the name displayed. All the others had the name missing. Hitting N worked for me.

PS forums are REALLY slow today.

No mention of this issue/bug in Cordovans Friday Stream to be in the patch U25.0.1 next week. Although other issues were mentioned.

Note: Cordovan did say that he only had the internal patch notes and some things might be taken off, probably if not passing testing internally, other fixes (not in those notes) might be added before patch deployment as well.

Correction: Cordovan did mention it furter into the stream. basically saying that they had problems recreating it so not been able to find a fix but are aware of it.

I've been playing since open beta and never had a problem wit the Floaty Names until this last update. For now running through the Haunted Burrow is not all that bad since I've done the quests so often I know just about where the items are. I'm not looking forward to going into the wider world and only beng able to see sparkles!!

Trying to find all 20 Soldier Packs in Mordor is quite enraging with no floaty names.

As far as being able to duplicate this, in Wistmead when I've has the quests for An Eerie Fog and A Waste of Webs Active the Steaming Stein on the table and the Curiously Empty Webbing will not have Floating Names. Press N to turn them off and on, go about doing things and ... they turn off again, and again requiring me to repeatedly use the N key to get done as I click the name to run about there.

Actually, you have to click the name on the Webbing as clicking the object seems to so nothing; if you near you can use the keys for select and use, but from afar you need to click the name.

If I remember correctly, last year I was clicking the blinking object.

This is my experience too, clicking on the blinking object does nothing, and I have to press N to get the floaty names to come up. I'm used to being able to click on the blinking object and have that work.

This has been happening to me for years. I don't even remember when it started. Some objects will just randomly not have a floaty names. If I toggle them off and back on then they usually display.

So this problem was not listed in the known issues section for the upcoming update. Does that mean they are not going to try and fix it? Are we stuck without floating names now?

I did finally make 2 videos showing thuis bug in hopes it will make it easier for the devs to pin-point and fix it.

That request/ticket did not get the usual standard reply that they had recieved it, or are aware of the problem, but only had "This request is closed for comments. You can create a follow-up.", but I only think that is due to saving time, or simply forgot to add amanual reply afterreading it and that they did recieve it. I hope so anyway.

I linked the thread with the videos in the report plus more info. However that was yesterday (well it's past midninght here now anyway), so those videos and that info might have been too late to get a fix into this patch. Others have tried to describe it in details as well in this thread. It seems SSG have had problems recreating this bug, so it could be that they had no way of fixing it. I mean if they can not recreate to see what is causing it it's hard to fix. It could also be that the patch notes posted is from internal notes that have not been updated yet and a fix is still being added to the patch last minute. If not we can only hope for a new patch with more fixes soon. No not "soon™", but soon. :p

This bug is not game breaking, even if very annoying and seem to affect ALOT of people. It is easy to miss quest objects and easy to forget that we now have to keep pressing N and N again often and wherever we go due to this bug and broken "Floaty Names", or "Floaty Text" option.

Edit: I acctually can't see the bug listed under "Known issues" (or maybe I just don't see it). I also see that the patch notes in the announcement were edited 29 min after they were initially posted. Maybe that means SSG have found a fix last minute and they are trying to test and add it to the patch before deployment. Hope is the last thing to die they say, he he he !!! :)

I'm seeing the issue all the time now. And I see how the names come back briefly at you hit N a couple of times.

I would have to say that because I'm cycling through with the "next object" bound key when I'm looking for quest objects or nodes it's not such a big deal.
The default nearest, Delete key is a poor substitute but why are some so resolute in not wanting to improve their lot by checking out the key binding advances over the years?


On a maybe unconnected issue: I have buffbars providing me with some popup cure pots. On one of my characters the clicks don't go through, like they have something "unseen" in the way. I've moved it around the UI a bit but I can't seem to get it working.

Seeing the Launcher options defaulting to the repair screen rather than the first tab/page, perhaps some z-order elements in the UI (or having an effect on the UI) have been moved further to the front than they should be, unwittingly. If SSG are looking at default UI set ups they may not have replicated the years of moving elements around so much. Would a set of ini files and a character copy, not volunteering myself, be of help?

I've noticed some UI weirdness lately as well. The other day while I was in the Haunted Burrow, the box with the "map out" skill just up and disappeared.

I found it hidden behind my mini-map/quest tracker boxes in the upper right corner of my display. I've never seen anything like that in all my years playing the game.

It's been like that for me since MM launch. I haven't logged in yet to see what it's like now. I was hoping to read something positive about this issue on the forum before I log in later, but it seems this issue could now be worse than it was before. :(

Floaty names are just as bad for me today as they were yesterday. Not just on quest items/glowy objects but also on NPCs that you need to locate for quest objectives. It's a Royal PITA to keep having to click N N and DEL all the time just to find stuff.
