That doesn't work. My grandmother swears as much as I do.
Shes also old and much less modern in her sensibilities regarding the use of racially charged language.
I got my pyromania from her too >_>

Agreed.
*** is the point of a filter if people are just going to report you. Don't tell me how to speak in OOC. Turn your filter on.
Re: How profane does profanity have to be?
You agreed how to speak in OOC and every other channel when you agreed to the Terms and Conditions to play the game. If you no longer agree with Turbine's rules that's your problem. It's not my responsibility to moderate my game play to accommodate your desire to do or say whatever you feel like.
I feel the thread lock coming soon.....or more soonerish.

You are forgetting that it is Turbine that is telling you how to speak in Turbine chat rooms.

Indeed, it seems to be running in a loop around the same race track. Almost like a program with a recursive GOTO command.

It's Turbine's channel. They'll tell to you to speak however they **** well please.
Re: How profane does profanity have to be?
I have a potty mouth, too, but I fully recognize that there is a time and place for it. I have 2 young nephews and a niece and I never swear in front of them because they are little sponges and like to repeat everything that anyone says. I also have a 6 month old daughter and I know that she is quickly reaching the age where she'll start repeating what I say too, so I'm making an effort to clean up my vocabulary around her too.
It's definitely not easy. My parents swore around me (not a TON, but enough to make an impression) and as a result, I've never really thought of swearing as a terrible thing. But my attitude evolved when my nephews came along.
Anyone who is sober and tries to say that they "didn't mean to swear" in a chat channel or "it just came out" is a bold-faced liar. You don't mistakenly type things out. It just doesn't happen. I'll let it go most of the time if someone is clearly drunk, but even at my tipsiest, I've never gone on a cursing spree in-game.

Turbines house rules. They could tell you to speak in English one sentence and Dutch the second with a little Klingon in between.

idk what country you're from, but in Canada you'll probably lose a lot of house guests that way

Turn the filter on. It's that simple.

Sorry, but no. It's not that simple. It filters out all sorts of perfectly fine words, enough to be quite annoying. So it's off. And as Sapience pointed out, their Code of Conduct prohibits the use of profanity, so if you're using it... you're breaking the rules and can be temp-banned. You want to risk that, your choice. But if I see you swearing repeatedly in OOC or anywhere else (and especially if you swear at me when I politely ask you to tone it down), you'll be reported.
We aren't responsible to take action to prevent your rule-breaking from being heard. You're responsible to prevent it from happening at all.

If a man curses at you on line at the bank will you report him too?

If it's against the rules we all agree to when we enter that bank? Sure.
Look. I'm a pretty safe driver, since I haven't been in an accident in 3 decades now. I do speed sometimes, though, and if someone reports me to the state police and I get a hefty fine... that's my fault. Not whomever reported me, and not the state police officer or the Department of Transportation. I know the rules and if I willingly choose to break them, I should man up and pay the consequences without whining about it if I'm caught. Maybe I'll learn something and avoid speeding next time.

If I am in a bank in a line and that bank has a rule against swearing while in their establishment then I damn well will report someone swearing at me in the bank. If once I report that person and they get thrown out of the building and wait for me to come out to harrass me some more, I will then report them to the local police for harrassment. As I have said before, I do not tolerate being bullied or anyone else being bullied.

Agreed. QFT.
What it comes down to, and all that needs to be said is this:
The Turbine ToS prohibits the use of profanity.
If a Player chooses to disregard the ToS then they do such at their own risk.
End of Story.
Really, there needs to be no argument or discussion beyond that. People doing such are just trying to justify their personal desire to disregard the ToS and morally absolve themselves of any personal responsibility or accountability. It's ultimately their choice whether to play by Turbine's Rules or not, although when the Ban-Hammer comes down after they are /reported or a GM catches them abusing profane language, then they lose all sympathy and right to complain as they have made their own bed and deserve what they get when they are forced to sleep in it. No one is immune from the Law of Causation, after all. If people don't like the potential Effect of their Cause, then simply don't do it. It's that simple.
It sometimes baffles the mind that people could try to argue over such a simple thing for pages upon pages when the premise remains the same. Don't do the crime if you don't want to do the time (or can't pay the fine, or whatever rhyme you chose to end that proverb with).

This brings our little discussion to a close.
A small reminder, the TOS prohibits the use of profanity. It does not say anyone has to see it, be offended by it, or report it. It states simply that you are in violation if you use it. Keep that in mind.
