Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
It LIVES!
OK, so my spousal units Aspire One suffered either a Windows or HDD failure, pending a new recovery disk and attempt to revive it.
Not that I would ever use such an event to my own gain, but should the drive be shot, I might like to trade my own to hers, and upgrade my system to an SSD.
Any new thoughts or notes, preferred brands, etc?
My own unit survived the Book 7 patch, so I'm happy.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
Hello guys I am right now installing lotro on my aspire one with the hdd. I cant wait to play it and reading on this thread i came across using a 1gd sd card as a paging file how do you do that?
Thanks I cant wait to get playing oh im running windows 7 right know will it be slower than xp?

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I just installed it on my Eee PC 900HA. It works! This is so amazing what these things do. BTW, this model runs the GMA945 integrated graphics with shared memory up to 128MB. I still have the stock 1GB ram, but I am getting the 2GB upgrade on Monday.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I just picked up my Acer Aspire and am looking forward to trying this out. Spending a lot of time away from home this will be great to pass the time.
I want to install the game and run it from a thumb drive. Can anyone tell me how I go about doing this or if it has been answered before point me in the right direction. Also what size drive will I need?
I am so excited when I was thinking of buying one of these for the convenience it offers me in class I never dreamed LOTRO would be possible!
Thanks!

I went the >control panel >system >performance and adjusted the page file settings as to have none on the HDD, and to max out the space on the SD card.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
WOW! I am totally impressed. Downloaded and loaded it perfectly and running it with no problems. I am running it off of a 16GB flash drive on very low graphics and I getting 30+ FPS in uncongested areas and getting anywhere from 5 to 12 (averaging right around 9) FPS standing outside of the Prancing Pony in Bree. I will try it in combat and elswhere tomorrow maybe.
But for now I am REALLY impressed!

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
Oh god this thread is evil and awesome.
...I just *had* to click on it didn't I? :)
Must resist the temptation of putting LOTRO on my asus eee 1000 that I specifically got to do *work* on the fly.
Must. Resist.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I must look into the 16GB flash drive angle. I'm not sure if it really would do better than running it off the HDD. But what I'm pondering is the ability to run LOTRO as a mobile application, such that I could play it using that setup on any system.
Any thoughts?

It defaulted to Low (Not Ultra Low) and got 10-15 FPS running around Bree. After making some tweeks. Lowered Population Control to .5, lowered texture detail to low. I got 15-20 FPS with that. Did not go to Moria
What type and size usb drive are you using? I just got an Asus 1000HE. Wanna try installing LOTRO directly on the hd and see how that goes. Might also try using a dual channel ocz usb drive as my paging file. If that doesn't work, then I'll try an install on a usb drive.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I just had to try it as I'm planning to only take a netbook on travel in the future. My experience was not as smooth as that of others, but I got it to work eventually.
Have the Ideapad S10e, installed LOTRO and every time I tried to start got the dreaded "Lord of the Rings is already running" message - which I found very confusing. But when I logged in on another machine, I saw that this message appears every time you log in, but mostly it's so short nobody notices it.
The problem turned out not to be the "alread logged in" but the default settings in the UserPreferences.ini file (in My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online). All I needed to do was edit the file, and in the [Display] section make sure it reads
FullScreen=True
Resolution=1024x576
After that, program started without problems. Set everything in graphics to Low and then experienced the odd phenomenon of transparent floor in some places. The only way to make that go away was to check "High quality lighting" in the Advanced Graphics option. Slowed down performance, but at least I can now see a floor :)
I've ONLY used it in Moria so far! Frame rate isn't great, but I was able to survive in areas with low traffic. But I wouldn't recommend for raids...
No tweaks regarding pagefile yet. Maybe that'll improve things.
One additional thing: For some unexplained reason, the UserPreferences.ini file sometimes gets modified by the program to the effect that it won't start. Then you'll have to edit again by hand and restart LOTRO.
Have fun!

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I'm unsure if it is related, but having pushing my Acer Aspire One hard, using LOTRO, the heat-sync failed and I sent it back for repair. The two things may not be connected, I've heard of this occurring in other systems, but it does strike me as a weak-point to be mindful of.

Expound upon this please? The heatsink itself really can't fail, as it's just a piece of metal. The exhaust fan failed and it overheated? Even at that, don't these Atoms have a built in protection circuit that shuts them down before they reach a dangerous temp? I thought that all the Intel chips had that these days.
-
Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
On this unit, like those of the breed, it is a flat piece of metal, no fins, etc. They've shown a habit of ungluing sometimes. There is a mod I may try later, where you effectively add fins to it, and that has shown the ability to cool the system down a bit more.
You are exactly right though, they do have a breaker that shuts them down before over-heating, and that is exactly what it is doing.
Truth be told, it might be a fan failure too, not sure, don't care, it is under warranty. But there is no question the puppy heats like a stove running LOTRO.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
According to Acer, the heat-sink did come off. They repaired it under warranty and it is on the way home! Yeah!

Good to hear, we don't want Comstrike to be without his LOTRO-running Acer for long! ;)
I haven't gone down the SD or USB drive road yet, still running off the hard drive, has anyone noticed definite improvements?

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
The curious thing is that I was used to the slower play when using it. Now that it is back from the "shop," it seems slower than I remember it.

Most likely it was you just remember faster. ITs not very fast I only get 7-10 fps and any combat drops it to 2-3 fps.

I think you're looking for an excuse to grab one of the new netbooks coming down the channel soon.:D

Someone getting a netbook with intention of playing LOTRO will be disappointed.
The frame rates make it difficult to use for any combat. but they are good for:
- Checking the in-game mail and AH, it nice to check the AH without needing lo leave were you are.
- Crafting, I now pretty much do all my crafing on the netbook while playing on my main computer
- second box for a mule character that just tags along and holds stuff when you main gets full. Very useful for leveling them up while grinding deeds or collecting low level crafting materials.
- Having a hunter on separate account to get you where you need quickly

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I poke around on my S10 so I know the situation in the current batch. However there is a new batch of netbooks due out in the next 2-3 months that sport video cards with discrete memory, updated Atom processors and more RAM. All for the same ball park price as the current generation.
They'll still be fairly low end but hey, I'm sure thinking about it. :D

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
Not really an Acer, but I think I've done what most companies would consider stress-testing on my ThinkPad X60s for quite some time, running LOTRO in Medium textures, Ultra High Object Draw Distance, and in 1680x1050 resolution (eff pee ess? I want tha eye candy!). I've been raiding in this setup for the majority of 2009, and although it made for some 'exciting' moments in phase one on The Watcher, I haven't been thrown out of my kin yet. But then again, playing LOTRO on a notebook is like playing .mp3 files through a 7.1 sound system from BOSE - you're missing out on half of it...
Oh yeah, the specs:
Windows Vista 32-bit
Intel Pentium L2400 1.66 GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM
80GB HDD 5400 RPM
X1000 Integrated GPU (!)

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
I got busy and dumped Windows 7 RC on my Aspire One - will try to get logged in on it tonight (if I can pry it out of my wife's hands :D). We set it up with the lotrobooster running on an eight gig sd card - looking forward to seeing how it is going to perform :)

Still, I dream of my favorite coffee shop, ice tea, and LOTRO...
Now what color is the Acer Patience has? Curious to know if she's a white, black, red, blue or....pink person.
I was once asked to not play Lotro at a Panera's after the table cleaner noticed my screen. My regular Paneras doesn't seem tomind.. so milage varies. Besides my game plays much better at Starbucks on my GoldCard 2 hrs permit a day through AT%T. Paneras WI-FI offers very uneven performance I've found in the past 14 months of lotro playing on my laptop.

Re: The great Acer Aspire One/Netbook challenge.
Panera had best not mess with my "work" when I play there!
That said, I can't think it is a horrible strain on bandwidth overall.
