The reason I chide is that it was a common theme, even in high level bike racing circles, to equate the best tan lines to the fastest bike racer. Some would even go as far as to hike up their shorts, jersey's, helmets, socks....everything :) in order to have the "best" tan lines.
This theory of tan lines = speed is difficult to prove. It provided a good excuse to move south each winter to test the theory. The theory held some truth...If you ride outside more you do get faster -- but it doesn't get any easier.
