Yikes, that's a tough one!
Conscience?
Ahhh, Gollum... makes perfect sense. I'd like to think I'd have gotten it if I spent a little more time thinking about it ;). Boss has been peeking over my shoulder a bit too much today.
That does sound like a tough riddle, Grace. I'll wager a guess as well, though... fear?
PS: I have a cat named Grace. I also have scars along my calves. Yes, those two things are related. *cringes*
PPS: I'm allowed a slant rhyme now and then, heheh
A hope token? :P
Nope, none of the above so far. :) Think a little less abstractly.
P.S. I have cats too, though no scars.
An alarm?
It's the "in saving I lose though boldly used" that most stumps me.
nice guess Gradivus, Im with you, an ALARM sounds right.
since an alarm in and of itself cant save, but can protect if its used/reacted to properly.
And it fits the other lines well.
good guess, even if its wrong hehe
Thinking more about it, I'm going to amend my guess from an alarm to a warning. Fits in better with "attempted to foil a plot" (implies conscious intent), and "in saving I lose though boldly used" (Possibly meaning ...when overused -- think "boy who cried wolf").
Hey MissGrace, get back here and tell us if Gradivus is right!
you mustn't hinder the progress of our beloved thread hehe

Lol, sorry. I've worked a lot the past couple of days.
Nope, Gradivus doesn't have it either. Here's a hint though: it's an object.

This could be too easy of an answer for it to be right, but I think maybe we've been overthinking this one.
I'll say it is The One Ring.
-The One Ring is a weapon, but not in the traditional sense of swords, axes, bows, etc.
-The One Ring attempted to foil its own destruction at Mt. Doom and tempted Frodo to keep the Ring rather than destroy it.
-After Bilbo left the Shire, the ring remained in Bag End, safe and secret.
-This one, as with others, stumped me.
-Frodo tried to save himself from the Nazgul on Weathertop by wearing the One Ring, a move that obviously failed as Frodo was stabbed by the Witch-King.
-I think this line refers to Bilbo's use of the One Ring in The Hobbit.
A very nice guess, as have been all the others. But not the right one. :)
Should I give more hints?
Edit: I'll say that it's from the books, and I don't think you can find it in the movies.

This is in the movies, but I'll give it a shot. The horn of Gondor?
Great riddle, MissGrace! I'll give it a shot and say Fire, or Fireworks..
A typical weapon, I am not,
Unless people attack each other with ciggy lighters...
Though I attempted to foil a plot.
The plot of the Nazgul attacking Frodo on Weathertop?
Forgotten I am, when unneeded,
Indeed.
But friend I am called, when heeded.
As Aragorn said on Weathertop.
In saving I fail, though boldly used,
Fire burns out, no?
But protection I am, when rightly used.
Not only against Nazgul, but wargs and goblins!
Wow, two more very nice guesses that fit.
I came up with another line to help:
A typical weapon, I am not,
Though I attempted to foil a plot.
Forgotten I am, when unneeded,
But friend I am called, when heeded.
In saving I fail, though boldly used,
But protection I am, when rightly used.
Without notice, by the door I stay,
Until I am taken, outdoors one day.
Note: one day does not necessarily refer to a specific day.

Haha.. an umbrella?
Haha that was a great riddle, well done SarahJo!
Quickie I just thought up, rhyming is terrible as per usual.
I give hope to others but keep none for myself,
But I am no Man, Dwarf, Hobbit or Elf.
Hidden from sight, aiding dooms uncounted,
Revealed at last, spent yet virtues touted,
From one of the first, to one from before,
I walked with my masters, both masters of lore.
Oh, I haven't read it for awhile, and I thought that Gandalf scared them off when they climbed trees to escape after Goblin Town by using fire & fireworks? or was that just wargs?
The Wargs were scared but the Goblins were not....
As to your riddle: Aragorn's mother, Gilraen, who called him Estel (hope) and specifically said to Elrond, "I give hope but keep none for myself", will be my guess. Though I may be reading into the first line a bit, she is, per terms of the Witch-king's riddle, not a Man, but a woman.
Sorry, good guess but not right!
nice guess kanoroch, I'm with you:)
