Except that you are. Again, a VIP membership is going to cost around $15 for non-lifers.

ok..let me give this a try....
with the changeover...LIFERS are being converted into VIP accounts.
a VIP account is a subscription account that depending on which model you choose can cost 9.99 or 14.99 a month.
now as a lifer being converted to a VIP account...you dont have to pay that sub....just like now.
normal vip account pay up to 15 a month.
lifer vip account dont because they paid that 199/299 up front.
they f2p account are severely limited extended free trials...they DO NOT have access to the same SoA content you have access to.
so...as a vip lifer...you are saving the 15$ monthly sub just as you are now.
:D
You want a positive? Here are a few alternatives Turbine could have gone down.
1) Labeled F2P as a new game. Thus all lifetime subs were completely executed when the "old" game is shuttered.
2) They didn't have to make Lifetimers VIPS. Or even Premium.
3) There is that boatload of free stuff. It is something of a mystery, But I'm pretty sure that Box on the stage has more in it than a box of Rice-a-roni. They didn't have to give us that either.
4) They could have chosen not to tell us or consult us or invite us to the beta. We could have woke up one day to LoTRO F2P.
It seems like you are trying to define Positive as "Better than lifers had it before the announcement" and Negative as "Not better than lifers had it before the announcement"
Kinda silly.
The thing is, I don't play outside of the three starter areas that are now being offered for free. To me those are the most fun parts of the game. I don't care about any of the new areas that cost $$ to play. I like Bree and Hobbiton. I'm not a powergamer who needs all that new content. I just want to potter around. Also, I've had no computer for months, so I'm coming back to the game now and suddenly finding that I could have just waited and saved my $300 and got what I want out of the game for free. For me, there's been a real loss here. I'm not upset about it - I foresaw something like this coming when I paid my money and accepted the risk, but I can easily see why some folks would be upset. And the fact that I saw it coming does not mean I haven't lost out on the deal - clearly I have.
The main point here is this: we lifers shelled out $300 to get a $15/month credit so that we never had to worry about the monthly fee. Now we find that our $15/month credit has been turned into a $5-$7/month credit. That is a loss in value. That's a fact: it's not a vague feeling that we've lost something - it's a mathematical certainty that we've lost financially. You can all say that we get the same content all you want, but it's not about the content. If it were, I wouldn't be here talking about it, because I still like and play the game. It's about the investment.
I just have to say, this thread is amazing.
Amazing wasn't quite the word I was thinking... lol.

Again, I don't play in a way that I would ever need a VIP membership. If I were coming to LotRO as a new player now, I would take the free access and that's all I would need. Therefore I have lost out on the deal, as has every lifer who shares my playstyle.
You folks seem to want me to play the game as a powergamer - needing all that content that costs a monthly fee. I don't. What I need is for my investment in LotRO to be what Turbine assured us it would be, and it isn't going to be anymore. A $5 credit is not the same as a $15 credit.
I'm a glutton for punishment, so...
Here's the thing... you CHOOSE to not enjoy the new content Turbine offers. You are CHOOSING to stay in 3 (or 1?) zones. You are CHOOSING to not explore the new areas people got for free with the free updates. You are CHOOSING to not level your characters to 55 and 60 and 65. You are CHOOSING to not do quests and experience all of the books & chapters. You are CHOOSING to limit your playstyle. Turbine is not forcing you to make these choices.
What baffles me is why you're so upset about f2p players being able to spend all their time hanging out in starter zones. I can do the exact same thing with a trial account. Once that account ends I can simply start another character with another trial account. I wouldn't have any need to keep things if all I'm doing is hanging out in the Shire, so rolling new characters to do that is not a problem.
You're upset about f2p players being able to hang out in Hobbiton, yet trial players can already do that day after day, week after week, month after month. Why is there no angst toward trial account folks?
I think the thing that people are confusing is Subscription and Content. These are two different things.
A Lifetime Subscription only gives you access to the Servers is does not give you access to content. Content is either give out free (Free Content Updates) or via Expansion Packs.
The $5 to $7 Reference is in reference to Turbine Points which is for Content not subscription.
The Subscription cost is not being devalued by Turbine.
IMO the SoA Content that I paid for 3 Years ago is still going to come with a cost to all new subscribers and will most likely cost more than what it cost 3 years ago. So lets say you paid $50 for it originally and now they offer a portion of it for free once you complete the free portion of it you have to pay either with Points or Cash to unlock the rest of the content which will equate to a Dollar Figure close to or greater than the $50 you paid 3 years ago.
So, if you were fortunate enough to have the money to buy a Life Time subscription for $199 to $299 you only have to play for 15 to 20 Months for it to pay for itself but you still have to pay for the content. I have both a Life Time and a 6 Month Subscription and I had to pay for all of the Expansions just like everyone else.
Okay, at least we now know what the real complaint is. You spent a bunch of money for a lifetime membership, and now comes along a cheaper option to just play the low levels of the game, and you're wishing you could have that instead. Fine. Buyer's remorse and all. But that doesn't change the fact that you are still getting everything you paid for, because as a lifetime VIP you are.
Anyway, this just reinforces to me that Turbine is right to go F2P...it lets people set their own price. In the meantime, you are going to continue to get everything you paid for...whether you want it or not. :D
Your logic remains totally flawed here.
First, as is repeatedly stated, you have never been promised the equal of $15 a month. No more than any investor is promised the same returns on their investment in the future.
The Turbine Points have real-money value in that you are going to get about $7.50 worth of them for free. I pay only a hair more in pro-rated monthly costs with a multi-month plan. Likewise, your points also buy you something you were NEVER entitled to under your deal, which is the ability to spend those Points on expacs and content that even Lifers would otherwise have to pay for.
So again, you simply are not accurate in your logic. I'm still happy you say you are not upset, but like many lifers, you are advancing a line of thought on unsupportable assumptions.
Yes, that's true. But why does my choice have anything to do with it? Everyone chooses to play in different ways. I've always chosen to play in those three zones. But what I choose to do has nothing to do with it.
As I keep saying, and as people seem unable to grasp, it's got nothing to do with gameplay. It has to do with the INVESTMENT I made to get the game experience I want. It's all about the money. I am no longer getting a $15/month credit. Instead I'm getting a $5-$7/month credit. The game, gameplay, areas of Middle-earth - all those things don't enter into it.
So instead of not having to pay $10-15 a month for a subscription and still getting the same benefit as that subscription, we are now... not having to pay $10-15 a month for a subscription and still getting the same benefit as that subscription. I still don't get how it's a "mathematical certainty" that there is a loss in value here.
Okay, this time I really do give up.

:D
Slower xp? I remember a lot of outrage and virtual screaming when the xp boosts were offered for welcome back weekends, but I don't remember slower xp threads. Or are we talking about the same things?
Those threads were about as amusing and mind boggling as this one. :D
But even though you may not use the other areas of the game, your lifetime VIP status bought you many things you do use and now do not have to pay to upgrade to.
Some examples:
Free players get 1 character - you get 5, 7 or 9.
You can have more than 2 gold.
You still have use of all 5 of your bags.
You have unlimited access to mail, chat, auctions.
You can have more than 1 or 2 Virtues
You get rest exp.
And you get 500 free points each month to buy lots of fluff to putter with.
Is it ideal for your situation - no
Is it a horrible value for you - no
I'm sorry you feel cheated, but maybe someday you will explore more of the world - you would love Rivendell and Lothlorien.
This is only if you recently purchased a lifetime account. The majority of lifetimes were purchased so long ago that we have broke even or have been playing for free for a while.
You are still getting your $15/month credit (same exact game and access as before)
But in ADDITION you are getting $5-$7/month more, so..........you are actually getting $20-$22/month value for the same initial investment.
Just because you bought a car one month and 2 months later there is a sale doesn't mean you were cheated in the least.
This is like them telling you to bring the car in once a month and they will detail it for you for free.
As you seem unable to grasp, you were never told you would receive the equal of $15 per month. You bought ACCESS to the game with no specific dollar amount affixed to it. In fact when the question was raised after launch I can recall it being said that the monthly subscription cost would not be fixed in stone. Indeed, you have nothing in print you are going to show, that says $15. Lifers went nuts when multi-month access was sold. Some didn't like Founders having rights to $9.99 a month access.
Additionally, the free access, such as it is, comes with limitations to the game, which may not effect you, but represent a lower level of access to the game. Something that does not effect you as you have full access indefinitely.
What is more, you must also factor the value of Turbine Points in terms of being able to purchase future content at no cost.
Finally, as noted by others, it is your choice how much of the game you access. That you choose not to do anything in the game is not germane to the topic.
There were several of them (if you want I can go into my posting history to link the threads here).
You MUST have missed them, because if you think they were mind boggling then you clearly didn't grasp the host of problems various players have with the current 'forced large amounts of XP and rapid leveling' system that is currently in place, nor the variety of benefits an XP/Leveling throttle would have for those players AND the players who wouldn't even use it.
Anyhow, I don't want to rehash that whole argument here. There has been PLENTY written about it already.
What I really wanna know is;
How many Turbine points will it cost me for a lifetime sub to this thread, because it's more entertaining than ANYTHING on TV!
EDIT;
Hell come to think of it, this thread maybe better than being ingame right now. We don't need to wait till Fall for new content!
