Would that be Bilbo Baggins?

Wardens of the Earth and Sky,
Favored of the Elder King,
Not foretold by a butterfly,
That flutters by,
As some might deem;
But heralds of a rising hope,
That may arise when faint it seems.
Ah, darnit. I just logged back in to guess eagles after thinking about it for a few minutes. You're too quick for me Nogrod!
The Eagles are correct. You should write a riddle, Nogrod. :)
OK. Here goes. Be gentle, this is my first riddle:
Ransomer of the red hill,
lesser branch of a smaller tree,
an outcast who sheltered outcasts.
He is remebered as the betrayer
of one most famous dragon slayer.
He cursed the one who slew his son
and he was slain by a cursed one.
Mim the Petty-dwarf; he sheltered Turin and his band of outcasts, but unwillingly, because they accidentally killed one of his sons. Later he betrayed them to their enemies; but he himself was killed by Hurin.
Excellent. And solved very quickly too. Mim is correct.
Well there doesn't seem to be a riddle up at the moment, so I'll offer one:
Whether blessed with keen sight
Or judicious sense of smell
Whether finished with sibilant stroke
Or named for warrior most fell
Whether stocked without a hue
Or bearing yokel's epithet
They were allies - tried and true
Claiming no fanfare as a set
edit: Nice riddle Nogrod, pretty darn good for your first one!
Two days with no guesses, looks like this one needs a hint, too.
They helped out the hobbits.
Well if you're close, maybe you just need one last nudge...
...think Bombadil.
Oh dear. I just realized a mistake I made when I wrote the riddle. That's probably why it's seeming hard to solve.
/facepalm
Here's a revised version.
Whether blessed with keen hearing
Or judicious sense of smell
Whether finished with sibilant stroke
Or named for warrior most fell
Whether stocked without a hue
Or bearing yokel's epithet
They were allies - tried and true
Claiming no fanfare as a set
I changed the first line. Sorry about that... :o
Hi Riddlers!
Well I'm finally settled into my new job, and its actually going well so far. Life is starting to calm down a bit again, so im finally rdy for some more riddling/guessing:) I will start regularly checking in again at lunch/ breaks
Congrats to us all for making the Hall of Fame! woohoo (and i must say, never has a thread deserved it more:) )
Ok someone put up a tough one:D Im back and ready to guess!
Ahh, welcome back Elvyen, nice to see you in the riddle-thread again.
Hopefully this is sufficiently challenging:
"When the black breath blows,
And death's shadow grows,"
This is the fate that all light shall know.
Upon twining of good and evil from ages past,
It shall be denied ere the great forces' clash.
Cleft of sanguine spike, fellowship's trap,
And through the Misties, with dizzying height.
It can be found, truthfully, on any good map,
If not the calacirya - made for the light.
It may be a bit vague, but you did ask for a hard one. ;)
"When the black breath blows,
And death's shadow grows,"
Is a part of a rhyme spoken by the herb-master of the Houses of Healing concerning athelas.
"Cleft of sanguine spike, fellowship's trap,"
Caradhras?
I haven't figured it out yet, but I thought I'd help the others with what little I have been able to decipher.
Well you havent lost your touch Womdon:) great riddle as usual!
My first try on this one is "PASS" (or "passage"?)
(sanguine spike cleft-redhorn pass)
(all lights' fate- all lights pass- next line in the athelas poem)
(a pass can be found on a map)
(the calacirya was a pass, cut into the pelori; so light from the two trees could pass through)
yeah im a bit rusty:p
i'll ponder some more and check in on my break hehe
Yep, the answer is "Pass". I'll see if I can come up with another one today, but I may not, it's getting a little dicey here at work.
OK heres my first one in a very long time:)
I am feared by many, oft bringing dread and terror to the weak
A fear of razor sharp claw, of fang terrible and fell
For all who seek to escape my grip are soon caught and vanquished, defeated utterly
Lord of the fearsome beasts am I, even the savage wolf calls me master
And I am respected by the mightiest
Interesting riddle.. it's got me thinking in several different directions.
I do have a guess though, is the answer hunger?
Nope:) nice guess though
Hmm, ok. The mention of dread makes me think that maybe it's an in-game enemy, but I'm still thinking about it.
*puts thinking cap on*
