Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
After seeing that wonderful video made for the Dark Hunters of Windfola, my toon wants to be able to really hug friends. Who else would like the HUG emote become a real emote instead of mere words?

Truly interactive emotes would be AWESOME! Not sure how difficult that would be to code, but if they can move a chair underneath you, I would think they could move your two characters into the proper position to do the interactive emote.
I suspect for such kinds of emotes where they would have to move the receiving character into position also, a confirmation dialog would need to be put up to ask the other player if they want to participate in the emote.

P.S. What video are you talking about?

Animation linking is very tricky, in a lot of ways.
We don't move chairs, we give characters what we call "chairpants": a chair is summoned when the emote calls for it. Just like anvilpants and horsepants.

I can get chairpants, anvilpants and horsepants, but I can't get the Skumfil pants? :(

Ah... That's interesting. Didn't know that.
Well... in that case I guess a different game mechanic would need to be developed. I'm sure it probably is tricky to do, but it would likely be worth a Best New Innovation in an MMORPG award. :)

INteresting. This would explain why when you cut off your emote mid way and start a new one, it jumps around instead of qeueing. Thanks for the info, Floon :)

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
To add to the problems of animation linking, spend a moment considering the relative heights of the various races. Man-dwarf hugs could get a little... awkward.
Ahem.
-
Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
While I'd love the idea for this in some ways, it's almost bound to be misused at some point, which is why unfortunately I suspect hug emotes won't ever happen.
And I have to say, I can see it going from something sweet to something skeevy really fast. Look what people did with the /pushup emote.
Ultimately, I can see many people having a problem with this. I play a female toon and have already had to deal with a few creepy stalkery players (luckily the exception not the rule in the two years I've been playing), so I think in actuality hugs would be overused emotes that would even possibly create server problems due to their interactivity and complexity. I think they'd be cute on occasion -- but also intrusive and creepy. I'm not sure it's worth it.

Not likely as GuildWars has had a system that "links" emotes for a long time. Sync'd dancing FTW.

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
LOTRO's red-headed step-sister, DDO, has the /hug emote. Its quite popular. Its not linked - it just shows you hugging air (unless you properly align yourself to the other person, or thing).

So, if Turbine already has the program for this, why would it be so difficult to add here I wonder? :(

There is an emote called "chairpants"? I never knew that!

Matrix Online had interactive emotes. It was really cool. When someone targeted you and did an emote that should be interactive a permission box would pop up asking permission and if accepted the emote would play.

I don't think there's much in the way of cross-compatability here ....
The skins and frames in DDO are totally different than LOTRO.
As for tech limits, I think Floon was saying that making emotes interactive (i.e. when I /hug, it causes our toons to line up properly and perform an appropriate hug) is difficult. DDO's version doesnt' do that.
I'm sure they could do a /hug emote here like in DDO - its just they'd have to do all the animations for all the races, genders, etc., like any other emote sequence.
-
Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
I think interactive emotes could be really cool. Some ideas:
/hug
/highfive
/dance (interactive dancing)
/shake (shake hands)
/kiss (could be the most fun one of all hehe, although I'm sure if implemented it would be done European-style with pecks on the cheeks)
While this would be in the fluff category, given this is a MMORPG I think allowing players to interact with each other more should still warrant some attention. This could really add a bit of fun to the game.

Or the forehead kiss like all royalty seems to do...

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
If it can be done I am for it.
On a side note... please, please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE limit the number of emotes you can do in 30 seconds time. There is absolutely no reason for someone to hug someone else 300000000 times in the course of 1 minute. I would even be happy if it was limited to 5 emotes per minute. The emote spam at 21st and DV is just ridiculous!

You CAN get Skumfil pants, just eat a lot of boiled cabbage, a bowl of prunes, and wait....

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
You mean like AoC's emotes? I loved those. /hug would make your character reach out and hug the toon in front of you.. same for /kiss /embrace etc etc.. Was very creative. I think it would be a nice addition to a game so heavily based on roleplaying like LotRO.

What game is AoC? Maybe I should be playing that game instead. :)

I can understand that, but would it be easier to have certain animations only affect the top half of the body when chair pants are on? For instance, I would like to laugh without standing up from the chair, and floating above it every time I end a sentence with a question mark is also kind of weird.
Perhaps this should be a separate topic, but I'll see if floon responds here first.

Emotes and Graphics are about the only thing that game has going for it. Totally not worth the $15/monthly.. dont waste your time ;]
But if you enjoy paying for a buggy beta game where you have to wait 45 minutes for worldly quest mobs to respawn, then grind the last 20 levels due to lack of quests be my guest.. its Age of Conan.

We're working on supporting some of that. The scripting surrounding animation blending and emotes is a hairy beast, and tackling it without causing lots of bugs is an annoying task.

Good luck on that. Maybe it'll allow for emotes on horseback as well -- we'll want those in Rohan.;)
Thanks for the update!

Ah. Now THAT is very heartening to hear. I've always thought how sad it was that we couldn't do all sorts of emotes while sitting that we can do while standing, and if you do type any of those emotes, the game automatically stands you up to do them.
Oh and while you're working on that (thank you very much), could you also look into fishing while sitting? If possible let our legs hang over a dock, bridge, or other ledge when near such a feature, and/or give us "stool-pants" to use while fishing.
Thanks!

You're a wonder, floon. I can just about make a calculator app with Java or C++, so the stuff you guys do all blends into a nebulous haze somewhere near the distant horizon of possibility. All I can say is, thanks, and I'm glad you take time out of working on pragmatic content to tweak the immersive details, much less listen to our uninformed suggestions.
If you are going to tweak seating animations though, I'm going to go ahead and ungraciously slide another one your way: Allow for numerous seating positions for both chairs and no chairs (e.g. laid back, bunched up, relaxed, and alert). Currently, taking Elves as an example, they have two positions. On chairs, they sit as if they are hiding a staff somewhere within their person - which is nice if they're in a formal council but not so much if they are next to a fire on a Red Long Chair. Similarly, if there is no chair around, they sit bunched up with their legs crossed, which is great if you're camping beneath a tree on a rainy night, but is overly guarded for a picnic in the Woody End, and only if there are no chairs nearby.
So, perhaps, if you're going to be reworking the system anyway, I can propose the following for your consideration.
First, make chairs give you chairpants only if you have them selected as well as standing nearby. That way, if you want to sit cross-legged on a stool, you can. Secondly, have two emotes: /sit would work as it does now - with a chair it gives you chairpants and sits you in an attentive "hidden staff" position - without a chair it sits you in a bunched up cross-legged position. /sit2 would be more relaxed - with a chair it gives you chairpants and sits you in a relaxed pose, maybe like that Escrow Broker in the Last Homely House - without a chair it sits you like some of the rangers I see sitting around, one one leg stretched out with the other bent at the knee and an arm resting on it.
I don't mean to complain overmuch about the current system or demand a complete and lengthy rework, but just drop an idea for you to knowledgeably ruminate the potential of. I just see some of the NPC's relaxing so comfortably that I wonder if PC's cannot be allowed to do the same, but then for all I know, it would be easier to create all of Rhovanion than implement the changes I suggest.

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
I'd just love to be able to sit down while smoking, but I also like the suggestion of having a "casual" vs "relaxed" sit emote (which I understand would immediately double the list of other emotes that would then have to be matched with the different sittings styles)...
So much to do, so few devs, eh?

Actually, the reason I suggested it here is because floon mentioned attempts at animation blending - so if I understand correctly, the same animation can be used for the upper body regardless of the lower body's position.

Hugging and dare I say it, kissing while sitting down would be well worth my $15 per month! :D

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
If an Elf hugs a Hobbit or Dwarf is it going to end up pornographic?
Maybe the Elf could bend down and pick up the little knee-high tyke in his arms and cuddle the living snot out of them?

LOL. Not THAT stool. Those would make fishing much less comfortable.

Re: Poll: Change to the HUG Emote...
Is the emote mis-used in Turbine's Dungeons and Dragons? If not, I fail to see why the technology can't be incorporated into Lotro on the next update.

When I type /shake it says:

In a world like LOTRO, it is a shame the emotes are not as full as they could be. I have played games where there is at least 3 different types of hugs, bows, curtseys, greetings etc, i would love to see a fully functioning hug emote.. also a /tickle emote :D

Hey, speakin' of Horsepants...
Has anyone noticed that the beat of our personal horse's hooves syncs up perfectly with the theme song from the old Get Smart! TV series?
I mean Absolutely Perfectly!
Jeebus, now with the additional mental image of Horsepants, and Serfs with coconut shells following behind, riding in LotRO just got to be a too zany way to move about.
