[EVENT] Green Dragon Friday - Hobbit RP event
http://laurelinarchives.org/sites/de...event_9500.jpg
Every Friday in the Shire is Green Dragon Friday!
Date: Every Friday
Time: 7:30PM UK time (usually 2:30PM servertime)
Location: Green Dragon Inn, Bywater, Laurelin server
Weekly hobbit gathering at the Green Dragon inn in Bywater, running ever since May 2008. This is an event for and by hobbits, although a few visiting traveling dwarves are always welcome. It is also a 100% in-character event, so don’t go talking about things not belonging in Middle Earth! Come along for songs, dances, poetry, tales, riddles, news and much grand roleplaying! And do offer yer own entertainment, if yer like!
Sometimes, we’ll run “Lone Bard Fridays”, where we only allow solo or duo performances. This is to limit the impact of big bands at the Dragon, and allow newcomer performers a chance to show their skills.
At other times over the year, GDF will move to other inns in the Shire. The new years party is usually held at the Plough and Stars in Brockenborings, while we always escape Bywater when the mayor hosts the Farmer’s faire in the late summer.
Event guidelines:
Green Dragon Friday is an in-character roleplaying event aiming to replicate a lively hobbit night at the inn. We try to enable a healthy lively hobbit roleplayer community here on Laurelin. To help us do this, please follow these guidelines:
- While dwarves are welcome at the inn, we ask that taller characters (elves and menfolk) do not attend the event. Men and elves were rarely (if ever) seen travelling through the Shire villages (and especially not the inns). However, if yer have quests to do at the inn, by all means come inside to finish them
- Be in-character - be a hobbit! Keep player interactions (chats, emotes) and entertainment in-character, basically by talking about the things that hobbits in Middle-Earth would. Don't discuss real-life modern-day things, game mechanics, etc. Avoid using forced emotes, setting off fireworks inside, bringing pets that wouldn't belong in an inn, throwing 3000 snowballs, etc.
- Be active and engage with the others. It is better to participate than to just stand around waiting for others to entertain you (however, feel free to come observe things the first few times).
- Avoid multi-boxing with lots of alts. Yes, we know that you love to pull off that fat sound of a many-musician band. However, when the room is full of similarly-clad robots marching in line (if they move at all), who don't respond when you talk to them, things get rather creepy and the immersion we look for is often ruined.
- Entertainers are very welcome! Just sign up with the hobbit hosting the event, preferably by a /tell. Note that we absolutely love solo bards/performers - a lone lute-player is often better suited for the inn setting than a huge band. Also note that we absolutely love other kinds of entertainment than music: Poems, stories, riddles, the latest news from the Shire... lovely! If you want to play music, it is grand if yer aim for a folksy hobbity vibe, with reels, jigs, waltzes, hornpipes and the likes.
- Gossip and news is very welcome! This helps bring life to the event and the roleplaying in the Shire. Just remember to keep things in-character. Related to events: We generally don't advertise events held on other servers, events not of hobbit interest, events not held in the Shire or events not of a roleplaying character.
Additionally, we ask that participants follow the roleplaying rules and policy for Laurelin, with regard to player names, chat behaviour and harassment.
Lastly, while the above may sound like a long list of rules, don't worry too much! Them hobbits are a friendly and tolerant lot, eager to welcome new visitors to the inn. See yer there!
Questions about the event?
Contact Lina, Grand Order of the Lost Mathom.
When you attend Green Dragon Friday, send your warm thoughts to the first people enjoying the event back in May 2008. Not least the creator, Mae Skeffington, who fought hard to set it up and make it last over the years. That was a mighty fine initiative!

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I do hope Barmy has changed that rug. It wasn't in good shape during the last party. Also I wonder if he's still mad at me for letting that firework off inside...
But anyway, please do come and join us at GDF, it's a great place to meet new friends as well as catching up with old ones. Bringing a riddle is always a good idea, I hate riddles myself, can never figure them out.
Hope to see some new faces on friday!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
It's a grand old night!
Plenty to join in with, even if it's just a spot of dancing and a dollop of Hobbity RP.
Come join the fun

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Over the vast ocean blue!
What to expect? Not a clue!
It's not been long, not for me, nor for you!
We'll soon return to Hobbiton-Bywater... Phew!
I must confess, to my rhyming stupor!
I'm no good, I know! I could be better!
But bare with me now, for not much longer.
Just one more thing to say, before my Supper
Welcome old friends, to lands-over-yonder!
Do not be afraid, lie still, see the wonder!
Things, they have changed,
yet still, the settings the same
In just a short while
We'll be back to our games!
Here's to the next Green Dragon Friday!
Greetings, Laurelin, from Twirrim (People of the Shire)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I would suggest creating a Green Dragon Friday lorebook entry for permanent storage of information. The devs have stopped pinning player created threads in the last year. Its easy to do, simply go here:
http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Green_dragon_fridays
I've left a stub for you to edit.

Thanks for the stub! I will likely update it, once me head has stopped spinning from trying to play with all the new toys over here.
In the meantime, have a biscuit *offers one from her sizeable stash*
Edit: A first cut of our lorebook entry is now up!

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I'll be sure an' stop by for a drink an' a tune or two!!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
This is a very charming event where you can let yourself go and have good old sing and dance. Highly recommended for your Hobbit! :)
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Lovely job on the page Lina, I'm quite looking forward to the next GDF and no doubt all the new faces. I'm sure Barmy won't mind all the extra customers.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I only started RPing on my small alt's just before the servers went down. But I have three hobbit's with three different personalities who would like to drop by occasionally.
I am a little slow at the rping but willing to learn. My hobbit's are, Rosebelle, Hollybelle and Lilyrosa.
Hope to see you all in the Dragon tomorrow (if the servers are back up).
Ardhuial.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Come once, come several times, come every time - no matter, as long as you are in the spirit of things, you will be welcome. And we try our best to be helpful to those new at roleplaying too!
If Laurelin is up this Friday, Barmy will open his doors for us, and GDF will be on as usual. I suspect some of us have been busy converting .abc files these last days too *smiles*
Should there be technical troubles, we will likely find our way to the Green Dragon on Landroval and enjoy a night at the inn there, at the usual GDF time. But here's hoping Laurelin will be up!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
We greatly enjoy our weekly gathering at the Green Dragon in Bywater. Recently we had a number of different events including concerts, a pie competition, an historical trip to Breeland, and even a Mystery Masquerade Ball under the stars on the last day before the server transfer.
On Laurelin there are many talented poets, storytellers, dancers, and of course, musicians ...often you will find them at the Green Dragon performing and having fun.
We hope to welcome you all for a dance, a song, and a pie or two at the Green Dragon *smiles and nods*
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I have always loved to join the times I have been able, unfortunately Fridays are more or less occupied for my sake :( But highly recommend the event to everyone that pondering to roll a hobbit alt and get to know the lovely RP-hobbit community on Laurelin:)
Ksys might join this Friday by the way, she hope to see her idols from Songburrow Strollers though :)

Well time for me to show up on a GDF now aswell.
I don't think I will join in fully (tbh I can be a bit shy when it comes to RP :o ), but just to be sure I will bring alone a riddle :)
See you tonight!

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Back in the mists of time (ok, 2 years ago thereabouts) a small and shy Hobbit lass wandered into the Green Dragon Inn, Bywater looking for the place she'd heard about in tales.
She happened to arrive on a Friday evening at a little after 8pm (As it was late spring it was BST -the equivalent of Daylight savings).
What she found was the Green Dragon Friday (Or GDF as it is affectionately known) and thus started my first tentative steps in RP. I had originally joined the server as a "that'll do" decision and had no intent to get involved in that "daft RP stuff".
The warm and friendly welcome I got at GDF meant I actually stayed until it ended..and came back the next week.
I later joined a RP kinship (Grand Order of the Lost Mathom) and haven't looked back. I am still a regular at GDF and can often be seen bashing out a tune or two on my harp or lute, or shouting "Is it a duck?" in answer to all riddles.
A few hints to make the evening go smooth:
They said they'd be here! If you turn up at the right time and there's noone there, don't worry we haven't all run off and hidden behind the bar. The Layer system in Lotro can put you in a separate version of the same place. We are all in a different version of the Green Dragon. Just give us a /tell and we can get you into the right one.
Mum always said it was rude to run indoors This was part of one of the first /tell I received. It was said in such friendly way I have always tried to remember it. To toggle between walk/run press INSERT on your keyboard.
Don't mumble! Emote chat isn't often used on Laurelin, any chat put in Emote is likely to be missed with all the dancing etc. Please use /say as we wouldn't want you to think we were ignoring you.
Buy the pretty lass in the red dress a drink Joking! This event is for fun, it's a way for friends old and new to get together and relax. Join in, dance a little, sing a song/recite a poem, tell a story or play a tune. The event can be quite hectic and we may not have time for your turn at the fireplace. Don't fear, there is alway next time...Or the time after.
Thank you, come again! Unlike Apu from the Simpsons we aren't there to serve you, we are there to relax too.
But the sun is shining! Please remember this event is based on European time, so when we refer to it "being late" and "Time for supper/bed" just go with the flow, it might be mid-afternoon where you are, but to us it's much later.
Most of all have fun, join in and try a bit of Hobbity-RP
I look forward to meeting you there.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
It's friday and that means only one thing. It's Green Dragon, look forward to seeing everyone and any new hobbit's that decide to turn up to enjoy the music and all the other bits.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Think I'll probably pop along to this.. :)
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I got Harperella 90% through the intro this morning, so I should be able to show up. However, I won't have time to roll a hobbit. I hope you won't mind me bumping my head on ceilings and pinching hobbit cheeks.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Hello!
Good to see many folks wanting to pop along to this the longest running RP event on the beloved server; Laurelin. Might I suggest the first post above is updated with this information I am posting here, in regards to useful contacts should players find the Green Dragon Friday empty of punters, and wondering if they are in the wrong layer. I would ask also, that the Lorebook version of this event is updated too! If possible.
Free to play update
With the introduction of layers, I would like to add a list of contacts should you find yourself in the wrong layer. These people will be able i'm sure, to direct you to others who are attending Green Dragon Friday.
1) Lina
2) Simbo
3) Rowana
4) Patula
5) Saphyre
6) Cloves
7) Jiro
8) Puffo
9) Huff
10) Amburr
11) Mahonia
12) Claramay
Note: If I've added you on this list, it's because I concider you a fine ambassador for Green Dragon Friday and know you to be a helpful and faithful hobbit.
I noticed Bootsy mentioned the layer thing, and as she is once again active she should be added to the list. If Lina, Rowana and others know of other fine hobbits who would be willing to be available to frantic /tell's from lonley hobbits wishing to be in the correct layer to attend this brilliant and longstanding event, then I say add them!

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I've smelled worse *grin*
I had a great night at the GDF, despite a few DC's (connection was unstable for some reason).
It was great to see so many friends old and new.
A few things to remember for this event.
1) This is a Hobbit prefered event This was covered in the OP.
2) Forced emotes Please save these for another time and place.
3) Wait your turn It might look like a free for all, but underneath there is organisation going on. Whoever is master/mistress of ceremonies will help to steer the evening forward. This means we all get a chance to have our turn at the Fireplace. Sometimes things go awry and time runs short. Please wait until you have been asked to play/sing/recite before doing so, this is what makes the whole thing run smoothly.
On the whole it was another successful GDF and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday

Master Ranon tells a story to the crowd.
Since Barmy had closed the Green Dragon for renovation a couple of days, the locals were excited to see what improvements had been made. Even half an hour before the usual Green Dragon Friday starting time, the inn was filling up. However, wide-eyed excitement soon turned to half-disappointed whispers and mutters. Besides a bit of cleaning and dusting, the Dragon looked more or less as it had always done, although an old gaffer swore that the prices had increased a bit again. Especially compared to the first time he visited the inn near seventy years ago.
Crowds of hobbits continued to come, though, so Barmy soon asked a few of the locals to stand near the entrance and let people in slowly. As the entertainment started, the inn was packed, both with regulars and visitors, some even from far-off Bree. The chat flowed freely, merry songs filled the air, and the dancing began in earnest. Through the night, there were songs, poems, stories and news, as well as lovely food served by the inn staff. A group of dwarven travelers popped by as well, enjoyed the hearty food and regaled some of the locals with stories from their travels. One or two big folk also came by, leading to some nervous whispers, but moods were calmed after another round of drinks. Or two.
As the night ended, the hobbits sang "Home Sweet Home", waved their goodbyes and promised to be back next Friday, before heading outside to set off a few leftover fireworks. As the final drunken hobbit sang and staggered his way out, Barmy wiped his brow, counted his coin, and looked pleased. Finally, he poured himself an ale. What a busy night, with a well-behaved, pleasant crowd. He hoped for many more like this. Why, at this rate he might even replace that old rug by the fireplace... sometime.
OOC: Grand good fun everyone! Well done!

Miss Bramba plays the lute, and there's just nothing you can do but dance
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Whew, that sure was a busy night. I'm guessing Barmy will be counting his coins over the weekend. He must of made quite a bit and still he won't replace that mat.
Lovely to see some new faces, hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will be joining us next friday.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Sad to say I missed this last Friday's event but you can be sure my hobbit Lauro will attend the next one. Cheers from the US RP server Landroval.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
A merry gatherin' it were! I'm only sorry I didn't get there 'til it were nearly over!!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Hope to make it this Friday. Gutted I missed it last Friday but had some rl issues to deal with.
Hope to see you all in the dragon soon, and I will be sure to bring a tale or a tune.

I look forward to seeing you there :)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
It's Green Dragon Friday again!
Get out your best dancing feet, a riddle, song, story or poem or maybe a tune or two to share with the rest of us Hobbits.
Lets see if we can make Barmy smile at his bar profits again.
((Please read OP for details))

Zara tells a poem to the audience, who listened in near silence
Another lively day at the Green Dragon, with many veteran inn guests and also a few new visitors. There were songs, stories, poems and many, many riddles. And even fireworks. They're best enjoyed outdoors, though, else Barmy will just close for "renovashuns" and raise the prices again!
It's also grand to see that there's plenty in the ways of entertainment. Keep bringing it with you, that's what keeps the night alive, and remember that folk music always pleases the locals! Should there not be enough time on the night for you to take the floor, there's always next time!
Just one more week until next Green Dragon Friday!
OOC: Apologies in advance if the "master of ceremonies" hobbit is somewhat slow in responding to your requests and offers. There's often 15-20 tell sessions to slalom through during the night, so it is a bit of a multitasking challenge *smiles*

Zara had a blast! Very busy, very nice to see so many faces, old and new alike, very much enjoyed the riddles and stories and to hear new music! Hope to see you all again next time.

Sadly I couldn't make it this week. I longed for it, because I had such a good time last week.
Hopefully I will be able to join in next week again.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I hope we get our collected events thread reproduced here, that way it is easy to keep an eye on all the events.
And it needs to get stickied too!
Oh and well done guys, nice event. :)
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
The stickies aren't available, according to our Landrovalian friends. They haven't made a topic sticky in about a year.
The GDF, HoF, Bi-Weekly Wattle and Comb are all included in the Free People's Press under the Server Events section.
All we can do is keep replying to the thread (Not bumping as this is against the CoC).
This should keep it fresh and eyecatching for new users/players.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Lovely pictures Duissane, you certainly capture the atmosphere.
I am so sad that RL keeps me away from this evenings nowadays. Is no secret I adore this event and the regular hobbits that are present there.
Hopefully I will make it in the future. I know atleast Ksys would love to join! :D (I never have as much fun when I am able to RP my hobbit)
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I came eventually this Friday and must have came at the completely wrong time.
Was not the good hobbit time I had been given previously but filled with constant spamming of /flip from a member and I stayed for like ten minutes and left.
I know this is not the usual standard of role playing I have come to expect from the hobbit events so I will give this Friday another try as I know there is a lot of new role players joining us.
See you Friday.
-
AW: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Ooh, Miss Hollybelle, what you saw was the hopping song. I guess that one can look pretty chaotic, in particular from a distance. *gives a chuckle* You see, for this one song, we all hop during the fast parts, and some of the younger and more energetic hobbits sometimes do backflips. But it only lasts for this one song, and is only done during the fast parts of the song (Miss Lina is always kind enough to put in some slow parts as well so we can catch our breath). It is quite a lot of fun to hop along and see who can reach highest, and to listen to Miss Lina's comments during the song. So please, do join us the next time, and I will do my best to see that no overzealous hobbits will land on your toes! *smiles and gives a friendly wave*
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Ah I must have appeared at the wrong time and thought there was something in the beer.
Will not be with you this Friday though a friend who now lives in Germany is visiting but hope to be around soon on Miss Lilyrosa. :)

Well Lads and Lasses, it's Friday again and that means GDF!

Green Dragon Trivia (GDT)
To be updated with irregular intervals, the GDT will contain information about the "lore" surrounding Green Dragon Friday, which may (or may not) enhance your experience of the event. Things to look forward to include information about the various parts of the inn and recurring activities.
The trivia will also be added to the GDF lorebook.
Green Dragon Trivia no 1 - The Rug
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-w...%252520rug.jpg
Lying in front of the fireplace where most hobbits gather for news and entertainment, the rug is a source of some consternation among the regulars. Frequently used as an area for dancing, the rug is now old, dusty and more or less worn down. The locals claim the only reason it still holds together is all the sticky ale spilled on it over the years.
Whenever the innkeep Barmy closes the Dragon for renovations, the regulars silently hope for a new rug. Invariably, they end up disappointed.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Ah that rug! One of these fine nights a lore-master is going to sneak in and do an archaeological excavation of what's underneath it. And they could be in for some big surprises - was this, for example, the last resting place of a famously-stolen pony? Could a count of the food scraps swept under it provide an authoritative answer to the vexed question of the edibility of Jiro's pies? Are there clues to the riddle of the lost mathoms? Watch this space for more intriguing details of the Shire's favourite watering-hole .....

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
This was the first Laurelin role-playing event I attended. I am a Laurelin player (starting a few months before the migration process to Turbine completed).
I have never laughed so much in a MMORP hosted event in my life.
The wit, quick posted comments really had me laughing until my sides split- I especially have to thank the hobbit with the pointy hat who served food to everyone too!
I attended with my greedy dwarf Disli and thereafter with my little Burglar Calanier- I said nothing at the event given that I am new here too! (I am far too shy :( )
To sum up... I was amazed at the quick witted comments which made me laugh out load and the friendly manner in which the hobbits said "hello" to everyone else who were ten foot taller than them.
I was, and continued to be enamoured, to the wonderful community which Laurelin has- my main character is yet to reach level 50 but I pop to Bree to help heal a peep or two in early quests, and I have always invariably found when I am in difficulty if another player is around they always help.
I cannot wait to attend the Elvish gathering in Rivendell too (I tried to run to Rivendell on Wednesday with my level 15 Smaragas but he died and respawned in Ered Luin!)
Finally, thank you to the incomparable Laurelin community- to say I enjoyed this event is an understatement!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Gotta love the Green Dragon events!
I was present with my Ksys, and I really enjoyed it from start to stop. Relaxing, fun, great people (hobbits) no boring moments.
Thanks to everyone that were there, it was really fun! :=)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Cousin Fumbles and I enjoyed our first Friday at the Green Dragon today! What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. The ale was strong, the pie delicious, and the company was absolutely wonderful!
Thank you all for making a pair of Buckland hobbits feel welcome. Definitely coming back.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Pie, pie and more pie! There was plenty to go around yesterday, along with dancing and song. I've been away from GDF for a while, but now I've come back I'm enjoying it as much as ever! Thanks to all the hobbits that make this event such a wonderful, funny, welcoming experience.

Green Dragon Trivia no 2 - The Story Chair
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-f...52520chair.jpg
The sturdy-looking chair next to the fireplace and the dancing rug can look very inviting after a few ales and dances. Should you take your chance and slump into it, though, the locals may cheer and demand a story from you. And there will be no way out unless you tell one.
Traditionally the place where visitors took their seat if they wanted to regale the crowds with a story, lately the chair has seen less of this use, not least because most storytellers prefer the warmth of the fireplace nearby. The chair is also quite wobbly after a dwarf got his ample frame stuck in it one night and had to be pried out, once the hobbits grew tired of bringing ales to him. Because of this, a few of the regulars have taken to call it "the naughty chair" instead. Still, don't be surprised if an old hobbit snuggles into it and starts recounting dramatic tales of failed potato crops, how strawberries used to be much sweeter sixty years ago, and don't yer shush on me ye young rascal!
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Some doubt has recently been cast on the authenticity of this chair. I have done some research - including some searching questions of Barmy - and I am in a position now to state that, despite having been repaired from time to time, specifically with four new legs, three new seats, and two new chairbacks, this is undoubtedly the original and authentic story chair.

A hobbit's work is never done, it seems. Here I am (I'm Sevelda, Slug-Squasher Extraordinaire!!) getting things ready for baking some pies before the start of the gathering at the Green Dragon Inn. I got drenched in the thunderstorm but I managed to get the blueberries ready!
http://jwindham.x10.mx/lotro/06252011-4.jpg
That dwarf was back, but there was no wizard to confront this time. No ducks showed up either. I am disappointed two times over in that regard.

FIREWORKS! And they were set off on top of the roof this time, instead of under it! We're getting better!!!

That would make it a Green Dragon Breakfast!
It was great to see the Aussie-Hobbits attending and participating too. (Wait...there is a 5 o'clock in the morning too?)
Please, please, please share with us some of the Aussie folk tunes. There has been a thriving folk revival in the last few years (I think it said Melbourn in the article I read but it was about 6 months ago and I have trouble remembering what I did yesterday).
I for one would love to hear something "new" and maybe do a little .ABC trade.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
oh dear im going to need a bigger mug of coffee....
Enjoying the Green Dragon events alot! Might even work up the courage to play some tunes....dont ask for a riddle though the brain power at that time of the morning is still low current.
I might not be talking much but i usually have enough energy (just) for the hippity hop!
Looking forward to saturday morning!!
*stakes out a camping spot behind the Dragon*
Aussie-Hobbits hehe i like that though on Landy any Hobbit that was from Australia was considered to be a Bucklander....all that mucking about with water, swimming and boating...*chuckles*

I think we can do some business. I'm working pretty actively converting some .ABC's including some 'patriotic' songs for Mar Nu Falmar.
I'm going to try and smoothtalk Harbut into doing a duet with me for next Green Dragon. That is if I can wake the dopey bugger up.

Thank you for a very wonderful morning! We had lots of fun! Next week Gumamela and I will try not to be late. It must be easier if we just stayed up for the event instead of sleeping then trying to wake up for it. Our poor alarm clocks were beaten silly. :3

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
With apologies to all the other races, here are the Lyrics to the "Bounder Marching Tune" sung by Moxsie at the last Green Dragon. Its sung to the tune of Skedaddle (a US civil war tune), coming soon to a fatlute near you.
The Elves they live for years and years
They're tall as trees with pointy ears
Their songs are long and kind of sad
Like that one 'bout poor Gil Galad
They gripe about new fangled ways
Go on about the olden days
When life upon them starts to weigh
Then off they sail to havens grey
But Hobbit folk are cheerful
We're hardly ever sad
As long as we have beer-ful
For every lass and lad
The Men of Bree are brave and bold
They fight for power and for gold
But really they're not very bright
Or would not be so keen to fight
Some men are bad and some are good
They often drink more than they should
As long as they stay off in Bree
Then we can get on Peaceably
'cause Hobbit folk like drinkin'
Of ale and stout and beer
It helps us with our thinkin'
And keeps us in good cheer
The Dwarves they live deep underground
In deep, deep holes they can be found
They like it best within a cave
Where its to dark to try and shave
They're greedy when it comes to gold
No sense of humour I've been told
Its better not to share a joke
'bout where they keep their women folk
Now, Hobbit folk are handsome
We're always at our best
We're clever strong and grand-some
but mostly we're mod-est

Green Dragon Trivia no 3 - Barmy
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...52520barmy.jpg
The Green Dragon has always been well attended by the local hobbits, but Fridays were often on the calm side. Things improved considerably when the innkeeper, Barmy Rootknot, hired a lute player a few years back to bring the crowds in. Always a shrewd businessman, Barmy figured the increased ale sales would soon cover the musician's wages and then some. As always in matters of money, he was right.
The visitors like little more than to complain about Barmy, given his general stinginess. Recurring topics include the watering down of ales (not likely true), increased prices (very likely true), and the fact that he hasn't yet gone about to replace the worn-out rug near the fireplace in the entertainer's corner (absolutely true). Still, everyone comes back the next Friday anyway, because Barmy runs a solid establishment, serving up quality ales and a lively atmosphere. And no matter how your day has been, he's always there to greet you with a friendly smile and a foaming ale. Just make sure to pay your bill before leaving.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I was a first time visitor to this afternoon's (for me in PDT) 'Green Dragon Friday'. Thank you, Lina et al, for the excellent music, dancing, and stories. I had an excellent time and hope to be back again. :)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
It's that time of the week again where us Hobbits kick back and relax in the Green Dragon.
Lots of fun with music, song, dance, poems or stories.
So put on yer best dress or suit and come along for an evening of Hobbity fun.
(Hobbit prefered event - See OP for full details)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I had so much fun yesterday, even though I didn't speak much (being shy, and fairly new to this much RP).
Cannot wait for the next one, as well as the concert happening on Sunday. Not sure if I'm going to go on hobbit, man, or elf.

Green Dragon Trivia no 4 - The other fireplace
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-b...0fireplace.jpg
There are two fireplaces in the Green Dragon. On Fridays, almost all hobbits meet at the fireplace near the entertainers and the dancing rug, and things can become very busy indeed.
The other fireplace only gathers a handful of locals, usually found muttering about all the noise from the other corner of the inn and how this never would have been accepted when THEY were young, whenever that was. Should things get too hectic and rowdy near the dancing rug, the other fireplace is a good place to bring a few friendly hobbits for a quick breather and some in-depth conversation. Bring your ales along and relax.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
How long is this event on for? I may be able to make it for 9:00pm UK time?

I see you all hopefully next Friday :)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Well Primmrose always feels uncomfortable when in or near a crowd of folk she doesn't know, and the more so when they are not even Hobbits. And she is reluctant to sing any of her songs against the 'competition' of foreigners who seem to be having a party of their own. When someone started letting off fireworks (again, sigh) that was the last straw and she left.
Oh, and Primmrose doesn't like to feel that she and her friends are being treated as a sort of circus act that foreigners come to see ...

Such a shame really ...I must say it is not only the Green Dragon having these issues , but many other places where people used to meet up and have a good time., it is sad when a hobbit like Primmrose feels the only way is to leave the event..it is sad to see people showing no respect for RP events that have been held on this servers for many years...we must be welcoming and we must be kind to all....would be nice if it was working also the other way round. Still there is some lovely people around...just look carefully, and you will find them :)

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
At the peak tonight, there were more than a dozen men + elves wandering around the Green Dragon, and there were others coming and going over the night as well.
So to repeat what has been said earlier. Big folks have never been banned outright from GDF, but it has always been pretty clear that this is a hobbits very much preferred event, with the odd dwarven visitor welcome. These guidelines were not set to be mean, or to stop people from playing the game. But for two hours each week, we try to have a lively night for hobbits, with hobbit interaction, news, stories, music, dancing, poetry and so on. This is pretty hard to do when there's a dozen big folk going on about how cute and merry hobbits are.
Players have for the most part respected the event guidelines over the last years. Keep on doing that, and all will be grand *smiles*

Re : [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I think that the problem is deeper than just a problem of races. Indeed it's much better when we bring a hobbit at a hobbit even, but it's not the only element :
First of all is a question of sensitivity and behavior. When you come to a place you are not used to, please take the time to watch, to feel the kind of ambiance people are building there, and whatever your race, even if you are hobbit, try to act in harmony with this ambiance.
Yesterday was a good example : a group of people who are used to behave in a certain way in a certain place, decide to visit another event (the Green Dragon Friday). they come in mass, and behave there just like if they were at home, not even trying to be attentive, to adapt to a place they don't know. This is not the right way to do it, and all you will win is the feeling to be unwelcome.
I often bring my human in the Shire, and at the Green Dragon, but i try to behave as discreetly and softly as possible, and if i see that there are too many non-hobbits, i immediatly switch to my hobbit alt. It's a question of being attentive to others, and to the ambiance you enter in. And i repeat, whatever your race. Coming with a hobbit alt doesn't mean that you don't have to be careful with your behavior...

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Such a shame that tall folk seemed keen to spoil a hobbit rp event. I find it annoying when just one tall folk turns up, because in terms of being in character a tall folk would rarely infact they'd most likely never be seen at the Green Dragon, or any other inn across the shire.
A dwarf would be more likely, but again that would still be rare.
So to those who turned up 3 foot taller than the rest of the crowd *claps* Bravo, Bravo indeed, thanks for ruining a fun event. How about making an event yourself in another inn, oh wait there is such an event. Infact each race has an event, I don't take my hobbit to the elves or the dwarves, I respect there event for what it is, and if I want to go, I roll an alt so I fit in.
*mutters*

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
One thing I have been very proud of regarding Laurelin is the excellent RP-community and the respect for one and eachothers events during the years. As a person that regulary host event/support others events with music, I know how much work/effort it lies in such things, and to keep going making fun for others, one need to be motivated and one need support along the way..Is very easy to loose motivation when someone "take over" th event.
For me Lina & co is a bunch of people that is very laidback/tolerant with their style of RP, I have never seen them rejected an elf/human or some dwarfs showing up at this event sometime. Actually they have created fun moments by watching them and observing them with puzzling looks :) when such things has happened, the players has been welcomed anyway :)
But this comes down to mutual respect I think.. It really doesn't matter who comes, as long as they show a certain respect for the event itself and know that THIS is a hobbit-event.
Oh and I would recommend people to roll an hobbit! this events are fun!
EDIT:rewriting my post as it was a little harsh and I don't want to offend anyone.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I'm going to have to hold my hand up and plead guilty to, at least in part, the invasion of the tall folk.
We had planned last night a kin event that included a stroll through the Shire and a quick stop off at the Green Dragon. I did not expect so many to attend but it was inconsiderate of me and for that I do humbly apologise. As soon as I was aware of the discomfort we pulled out and ran as fast as we could back to Bree and to the familiar surrounds of the Prancing Pony.
Rest assured this will not happen again.
Regards,
Bango.
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Very gracious of yer, master Bango! Rest assured I don't think there was any ill will involved, it was simply one of those nights where it was too much and out of sync. As you say yourself, most of the big folk crowds left as soon as us locals started getting a bit vocal, so well done and don't worry too much about it afterwards *smiles and offers a biscuit*
The guidelines as outlined in the first post set the general frame for what we try to achieve. Generally, we try to avoid policing things too much at the Dragon, in order to create a free atmosphere where both newcomers and veterans are allowed to participate and enjoy themselves, and where you aren't blasted into orbit if you do "wrong" things. Last night that didn't really work, but I am sure we will be back on track soon enough!
It felt a bit strange to sing the following song last night, though. Especially the last verse *grins*
The Grand Shire Song
From the east a group of travelers came
Sixteen hundred years ago
Hobbits crossed the Brandywine
Bodies weary but their eyes aglow
Seeing the fair fields their hearts were afire
This is our land, this is the Shire
In the days of old our ancestors moved
Seeking lands both fair and free
Running from an eastern dark
Crossing the mountains, settling down in Bree
But in their hearts were a stronger desire
This is our land, this is the Shire
Rumours came of golden fields in the west
Northern kingdom hunting lands
Hobbits two set out to ask
The king gave in to their demands
Marcho and Blanco won all they desired
This is our land, this is the Shire
Hobbits, we enjoy a peaceful time
Far removed from big folk eyes
Harvesting our golden fields
Life fair and free beneath the sunny skies
The sight of our fair lands set all hearts afire
This is our land, this is the Shire
((Best sung to the tune of Corydon and Phyllis))

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Well lessons learned I think! It's not the first time this hobbit event has been invaded by folks taller than they should be, and it most certainly won't be the last. The strength lies yet again in good old hobbit resolve and initiative. The guidlines are hobbit preffered, and great importance should be placed on my ancient text which states clearly ''Come as a hobbit, you will find you get MORE RP this way''. That to me speaks books, for both the hobbits in attendance, and those people who must get dizzy being over 5 feet tall.
I remember one time, those pointy ears of Vanimar stumbling upon our event, and some hobbits got their chicken feathers ruffled over it for about a min or so, until I decided to be inclusive of those strange lop eared creatures, and told them a few riddles, and played them a few songs. Of course I knew some of them in Vanimar, nice chaps to be fair, and they were very gracious, even though it was a ridiculous concept of Elves and Hobbits in a Shire Pub, we made the best of it, on both sides! I think that's key here.
If anything, hobbits should not forget that one day, these tall folks may roll hobbits and attend an-mass next week, so I would hate to hold bad feeling. Big folks, should observe and respect guidlines to a hobbit preffered event of course, but I hope dearly you attend as your shorter 'self some time, and try to fit in better.
Not that i'm in charge any more, those rascals in Grand Order do a fine job. All the best to this event, and those attending. Don't forget, todays lankershanker, could be tomorrows finest hobbit-story-teller ! x

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Thank you Lina for those kind words. I have put something in the post to you to help with next week's event :)
-
Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Indeed, Master Bango, you shouldn't worry too much about it. You and your guests had the misfortune to arrive at an evening where at least three more groups with tall folk were present, and the resulting number of all these tall people was simply a bit too frightening for us hobbits. But you left as soon as you noticed our discomfort, which shows a lot of consideration. So thank you to you and your friends.
And if I may mention one thing in general to further peaceful co-existence if different groups happen to use the same place: remember when starting to play a song that you do not only have to be out of earshot of the other performer, but out of earshot of their audience as well, or the audience will hear both tunes. If you keep away twice the distance at which you cannot hear the other performer anymore, you can be sure that neither tunes nor chatting will carry from one group to the other, and that alone will make the evening a lot less stressful for everyone concerned. For example, in the Green Dragon the second fireplace would be a good place for a second group, in the middle of the room close to Barmy is not (although I can see the appeal in being close to Barmy's ale).
Apart from that, I can only concur with what has been said before: Remember that you are in the Shire, which in our times is fairly closed in and not used to visitors from out of bounds. Remember that what is perhaps a one-time visit to you who are from the race of Man or Elf (and thus may fall into the "ah, they won't mind this single visit" category for you) is not a one-time special occasion for us hobbits if each friday several of the tall folk have the same idea. So please, help us maintain the Shire as it is described in all lore. I can promise it will not diminish you, but enrich your experience.

I wish everyone else would take that into consideration as well, not just in The Shire... *sigh*

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Wise words, wise words indeed.
I myself feel a bit out of place at the Green Dragon as being a dwarf and all. I hope I can continue to visit
though, cause my hobbit-alt have no clue about whats up and down on a lute...and for singing... *shivers by the thought*.
The Green Dragon is also 'the' place to be when it comes to new tales and songs, and everyone know that that is the bread and butter for a bard. Hope I do not offend to many by listening in, and maybe perform a little tune or two with the rest of the lads in 'The Chosen Few'.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I'm sure no-hobbit minds a few dwarves and lankies, providing they join in the fun, and don't just look on it as a spectacle, or have their own impromptu parties that disturb us hobbits! It is in fact a pleasure to see Grymrock and others joining in the music-making .... and didn't I see him hopping during the hopping song the other week?

aye, but would prefer that fact to remain in the shire though...*looks around a little worried*

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
I wouldn't have come but that I was invited by a hobbit friend of my character who was nervous about attending his first Green Dragon event, as he was planning to play there. I explained that I had crashed the party once before and regretted it because while I felt uncomfortable at the event and left quickly, a kinsmen of mine stayed even after some hobbit players had talked him down both IC and OOC. He insisted several times and finally mentioned that there was plenty of tall folks present already, so I wouldn't be out of place.
The first time I attended I was new to the server and I personally feel now that I was disruptive then and I hope that everyone's forgotten about it and forgiven me. Although, in general, the reaction of many of the hobbits that I received was not altogether negative, I realize now that I was exacerbating an already-existing problem only by being there.
This second time that I was pushed into attending, I tried my best to focus all of my rp on my hobbit friend and on the activities of the hobbits, to be an accessory to what was going on rather than any sort of integral part to it. I found myself in conflict with the tall folk there, as I would politely ask them to step aside so the shorter folks could see.
Finally came the point where a verbal scuffle broke out between a couple tall ladies and a hobbit. I don't altogether know what caused it. I think I heard something about the tall person being angry because she wasn't invited up to say her poem. Really I don't care if she was Emily Dickenson, let the hobbits have their fun if you must watch. I attempted, IC, to break up the fight and scolded the lady for being a bad guest, and I felt the same sentiment out of character.
A hobbit shouted something along the lines of "why don't you go back to the Pony!" and I felt that that was aimed as much at me as it was the people perpetuating the argument, so I made a point of leaving once I knew the two women who caused the trouble were gone.
I won't come back on a Green Dragon night again, no matter if I'm asked to or not. And while I sympathize with the angry hobbit players, I also offer a word of advice. No matter how much you poke and prod LOTRO, LOTRO is not going to be the books by Tolkien in interactive format. Some things you have to accept with a sigh and get a cup of tea.
We, in Bree, experience the same issue with elves and dwarves and hobbits invading our personal spaces, if anything moreso than any others. I appreciate that the hobbits have worked hard to create a depth of rp unattainable anywhere else on the map, and really you all deserve a big clap on the back for your songs and poems and stories, because every time I see you all I wish I had a hobbit character, I really do. But we also have to face facts that we're in a video game and people are moving over the whole of the map, no matter how unrealistic it is, collecting, turning in quests, turning in mathoms, and we're going to invade eachother's space no matter if we mean well or not.
If anything, use your superior (and it is superior, that's me being honest) rp to scare away the intruders. Regard them with suspicion. Tar and feather them for causing a menace. I would appreciate so much more that you mistreat me in-character than complain about me on the boards, because frankly you don't know me or what my motivation was.
In any case, I hope to see all of you ingame soon doing what you do best, even if I won't be at the Dragon anymore.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Hullo Master Fabien,
I remember the evening you were at the Dragon with a few of your kin. Military men you were all, if I remember correctly. I also remember that out of the fifteen or twenty hobbits that were there, one was being unkind to your group at the start of the evening and made one of you leave in anger (that would have been you, I suppose). Since you left, you could not see that the hobbit in question was immediately chided by another hobbit in front of your remaining group. It was explained to him that tall folk are made welcome in the Dragon as long as they behave well.
Now I have visited every friday evening since I arrived in the Westfarthing a year ago, and I can only agree with that: always were travellers who chanced upon us been made welcome if they displayed good manners. Such it has been during the whole last year and I have no reason to believe it was any different in the years before (and young hobbits might do well to remember that). So please, Master Fabien, do not think that anyone voiced a complaint about chance travellers, for they did not. Also nobody voiced a complaint about you who are merely accompaning a hobbit friend from Bree or Staddle. Such things are easily explained, and you are of course welcomed.
The last friday evening was a singular occurrence which probably does not even merit all the excitement it has stirred up. Four groups independently decided to come during our two hour gathering which is held only once a week. The chances of such a thing are low, I for one have never seen it before, and perhaps it would have been best not even to mention it, but it did cause the evening to be less enjoyable than normally for many hobbits who come to the Green Dragon regularily, and it pains me to see that, as it is the work of these regulars which makes the evenings so special. Seeing as I for one am always looking forward to these two hours for the whole week, I can understand that some were so disappointed that they had to voice that. Now that it has been mentioned, I have seen others write some very good and insightful advice that applies to special gatherings in general, so at least some good did come from the whole issue and I am glad for that.

Re: [EVENT] Green Dragon Friday
Fabien,
The hobbit the shouted "why don't you go back to the Pony!" should be a bit ashamed and I am quite sure was scolded by other hobbits. This is not how we do things in the Shire. If I feel uncomfortable when tall folk visit I will find a little excuse and leave :
" Oh I just remembered I have a pie baking in the oven, please excuse me...I have to go. Goddbye! "
There is no need to be unkind or unwelcoming...especially in the Shire :)
I understand how you feel but it does sadden me to read you will not go back to the Green Dragon Friday. It is sad when anyone on the server feels not welcome and decide not to take parts to events *sigh* . The Shire is a a lovely part of Middle-earth....every day is a 'happy day' there. Some hobbits will be a bit scared and curios about tall folk, some will hide away, others could even sound a bit unwelcoming but the those that do that do not represent the majority of the hobbit community on Laurelin which is wonderful. We all know LOTRO is a game...and yes, we are all gamers...but to many on this server especially Tolkien's legendarium is very important. We try to follow the lore as it add to our immersion and game experience.
You write that in Bree you ( tall folk ) have the same issue. I would not agree with that and I shall explain why... I am a hobbit, all my characters are. I am often in Bree and at the Pony and I feel very welcome there. I play music for my tall friends and I never ever felt I was in the wrong place. I was there last night and I had a lovely time with my tall friends. As a hobbit in Bree I respect the tall folk RP , and never ever invade their personal space. Bree as Bywater is open to all players of all races...tall or short and as long as everyone behave nicely ...everyone is welcome. I really think you should try to create a hobbit and enjoy the warmth and happiness of the Shire...this could be a wonderful new project for you, try...give it a go ...we have pies :D
There is no such thing as 'superior RP' in the Shire...hobbits will be hobbits, as I said, some are just a bit shy and scared of tall folk. The hobbit community of Laurelin is lovely and welcoming and no one should feel unwelcome or unwanted. It may not always be perfect, but that is because the community is 'real' and as in real life, sometime there can be some problems and little issues that we will try to solve. Green Dragon Friday is a wonderful long running hobbit event which has some guidelines so that everyone taking part can enjoy and have a great time and if those guidelines are followed by all Green Dragon Friday is an amazing RP experience for short, medium, and tall folk :)
