The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Greetings fellow roleplayers of Laurelin!
The Laurelin Archives provides you, the players of Laurelin, with a unique portal where you can share your creative work, plan events and present your characters and kinships to the community with ease!
This is done on the site with minimal to no OOC options. No forums, comments or ratings are available, there are more than enough forums out there, including this official one, that works perfectly already.
This is not a community in itself, there are no members, leaders or entry requirements. Just a web team maintaining and moderating the site. We won't judge good RP from bad RP, as long as it's RP and it abides by the Roleplaying policy, it stays on the site.
We feel The Laurelin Archives speak for themselves and one visit should be enough for you to understand the workings of it all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The website is in some ways represented in-game by old census books of the Kingdom of Arnor, recovered and protected by the Elves of Rivendell. The in-game kinship The Grey Repository ICly maintains the archives and is made up of the website team. More about this explanation can be read on the site!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
To join the Archives, all you need is a valid email address. Once it has been verified by our team - Away you go! You can create your character profile, post stories, events, kinships and link them together with others using our simple [[double brackets]] freelinking system!
Last of all, the portals most important contributor is YOU! So follow the link and check it out for yourself!
http://laurelinarchives.org/
We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it!
Note: The site is based on The Argent Archives, an RP portal for a World of Warcraft EU Roleplay Server (Argent Dawn), which was extremely successful in boosting the amount of RP on the realm and bringing everyone closer together! This was done with permission from the webmaster of that site.

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
From its initial launch, the Laurelin archives has become a superb and important tool for a lot of Laurelin Roleplayers. its well laid out and choc full of excellent material, i cant recommend it enough!
-
Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
I can't praise you enough for this exellent site :)
Keep up the good work.
-
Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
I cannot agree, or thank the LA site, enough - for the Archives have been a repository for the majority of Laurelin's thoughts, feelings and actions for coming two years!
Only last night, did I complete Andarne's 100th Entry in his journal. I can safely say that thanks to the Archives, so much of my own RP has been appreciated and expanded.
Calenon, you and yours get a 20 out of ten.

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Its a brilliant site one which i think brings the RP community closer together in one place.
-
Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Laurelin Archives has been one of the few sources of alleviating the tedious bore of many a drawn-out, boring afternoons! It also stands as a solid testament to the tenacity of Laurelin's roleplayers.
-
Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
I can only agree with the comments above.
Laurelin Archives is a wonderful place to view and express the creative spirit of the server's roleplayers; a visit to the site never fails to inform, amuse and inspire.
High praise to Calenon and the LA webteam for maintaining the Archives - and equally to the many players who contribute their writing and art to make the site the RP focus it is! :)

People, please have the courtesy and respect for the original artists, name your sources. I've also run into a lot of traced drawings recently which I consider very bad taste both intellectually and artistically. Because if you do it and think nobody will notice, THEY WILL and getting caught tracing can make you look terrible.
Editing someone else's work doesn't count as creating something original either. It's not reprehensible in itself but claiming it your own is lying.
Just my two cents, thank you!
Agree'd!
In some cases, blatantly editing any work of an artist, and not naming him/her; is against the UK Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
Sadly, Calenon and his team cannot moderate all the profiles. Like LotRO, it's up to the users' to report anything that needs to be.
However, to those that do source the original - and give proper credit where it's due, it helps make a profile so immersive and pleasant to read.

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Indeed, it's against copyright laws and the rules of the site. Please credit your sources! A copyright message mentioning the original artist in the corner of the picture is the least that can be asked for. Like Andy said though, we've got limited ability to check all the pictures on the site, so we rely on users with better knowledge of these works of art to contact us with the information we'll need to take action.

I see we now have a Copyright Report Function.
Please remember to source artworks, and always ask permission if you wish to Edit them!

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Greetings!
In a joint venture between the Laurelin Archives and Alabast, the webmaster of the Argent Archives, we're happy to present an exclusive test of a new feature! The Chronicle! It is best explained by Alabast himself:
"The Archives was made to tie roleplayers together more. Reading each others profiles, sharing events and news; it’s all been made with the intention to make your adventures more real. Some players use it to give themselves a feeling of it all happening in a larger context whereas others might use it to help themselves organize their own, more personal, but highly intricate plots.
So far we’ve given you the ability to record your character profiles, written adventures, screenshots and artwork, events and kinships, even news and public notes. But to us, there’s always been one node that was missing. A node that allows you to describe alliances that are independent of kinships or record the exploits of that ‘neutral faction’ you wanted to try out. A node that lets you record a timeline of your heroic events or tie together plots that before were unrelated. Today we hope you’ll help us test this missing node. We call it ‘The Chronicle’.
The goal of the Chronicles is to help you organize what you upload to the Archives. Even better; it’s a great way for other players to quickly understand and research a concept you’ve been working on. We say ‘concept’, because a Chronicle could be about anything. Currently we don’t have any restrictions on it. Just remember the regular rules of the Archives. A few examples of what you could organize would be:
A large military campaign that spans several battles
The complete storyline of your internal kinship affairs
Document the incidents between two opposing groups
A gathering point for a kinship alliance between different orders/kinships
A larger community project in an otherwise quiet part of the world
A list of proclamations and important statements from your kinship
Whatever project you have in mind; the Chronicles is probably where you should put it.
What sets a Chronicle apart from a Kinship node is that it can be about anything. But as opposed to a regular Adventure node it has a field for both related stories, related images and related events. Even kinships can relate themselves to a node if they want to. This means that people can work together like never before.
We will also open for up being very ambigious with the authorship of the Chronicle. So as opposed to news articles that always needs an IC character responsible for it, you can simply write that ‘This Chronicle is maintained and written by Scribes of the Archives.’ That way you can post Chronicles about the most illiterate, savage or barbarian character.
FAQ
This idea would put a lot of focus on really popular storylines that don't need any more attention!
- Actually; this node would allow people to create and bring attention to even minor communities and storylines.
How do one know what Chronicle to submit to? What if there's two Chronicles named that both claim to document/do the same thing
- 1. People must make a choice regarding what Chronicle they support and feel is the best one to submit their links to unless one can submit to several Chronicles at the same time.
- 2. This is where titling your Chronicle is important. Put your name in the title for example to make yours as unique as possible. This will allow people to choose the author they approve the most of.
What if someone links to the Chronicle and you don't want them to?
- Regard it as a compliment. People think you're doing a good job and want to be a part of what you do. However; you CAN also make a list in the Chronicle info field where you list up the "APPROVED" documents linked to your site.
This is not a compliment. There’s an IC document linked to my Chronicle about my character’s exploits with five half-deer/half-undead girls of dubious age.
- That's OOC harrassment and a different ballgame. This is a problem independent of Chronicles and will be dealt with in the harshest way possible. "
So go and see what this new feature can do for you, experiment with it, and contact us through the form at the top right of the site with any questions or feedback you may have.
And as usual, enjoy the Archives! :)

I really do love the Archives and the hard work that not only the admins put into the project but also the players that spend time and effort making the entries. So thanks to both parties.
I look forward to exploring the new features Calenon. Thankyou

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Laurelin Archives is to our server a wonderful gift and tool : A diary, a gallery, an address book, an event calendar, and much more... and everyone can participate easily !
What i especially appreciate is that there is no forum nor comment, so your works are not wasted with silly or negative criticisms, no pointless debates, it's very wise, peaceful and relaxing.
Long life to Laurelin Archives !
A grateful player :)

Next in the line of new features, you can now invite a friend to the site!
Do you have friends that you think should join you on the Archives? Maybe you've told them to register, but they're dragging their feet? Give them a push in the right direction by formally inviting them to the site, as long as you know their email! Go to your account page and find the "Invitations" tab to get started! :)

Just joined up last week or so myself - Credit is entirely do to Khallis_Laurelin (did I get the name right?), who's persistent mentioning of the archives kept reminding me "Hey, go check it out!"
The archives are great, and I've had a blast slowely updating my character and my kin. Plus, its not caught by the filters at work, so thats doubleplusgood. Now if we could entice more of the NA Laurelin players to get busy over there.. if only we could... *proceeds to force his kin-mates to register*

Thank you a thousand times and more!

Re: The Laurelin Archives - RP Webportal
Thank you all for the praise, but most importantly thank you for your work! Without all of you the site would be an empty husk, so make sure to also thank each other and pat yourselves on the back for helping to make the LA into what it is today!
Keep enjoying the Archives! :)

Greetings!
In order to comply with our host's regulations regarding resource usage, a major overhaul of the file system will take place within the next few days. We will also use this unfortunate opportunity to clean that system up. This will move and rename all images uploaded to the site thus far. It won't have any effect on the image node's location on the site or the URL path to the image node, but it will break any manual filepath links you may have added to your stories, profiles, kinships, etc. This will affect all images, including profile and kinship banners and similar.
There will be a reminder posted on the frontpage of the site before the overhaul is performed. All images will be saved in a backup by the webteam prior to the overhaul, in case of inevitable complications, but as always we recommend all users to maintain local copies of everything uploaded to the Archives.
So, make sure you have local copies of your images and make note of any stories or similar that may contain links that will be broken so you can update them after the overhaul. We apologies for the inconvenience posed by this situation, but we also see it as a sign of success. The creativity and dedication of the Laurelin roleplaying community has outgrown the Archives' framework, bulging at the seams! We are proud to maintain a repository of this community's greatness!
Keep enjoying the Archives! :)

Thanks for the update!
I am sure i speak for everyone who uses the Archives in that its a brilliant site and is one of the elements which binds the role playing community together.
So a huge thank-you from myself and the Warband of Imladris.

This thread really should be stickied to the Laurelin forum.

The overhaul went very smoothly! Everything should be as it was, but with new filepaths to all your images. If any of your images seem to be missing or you find any other errors, please tell us about it by sending us an error report through the contact form at the top right of the site.
Thank you all for your praise and continued support, you're the best! :)

It's a wonderful site, a platform for creativity and imagination. And hey, Cymaru has got a nice profile number: #100 :)

*cheers happily and jumps up and down*
Laulrein very first sticky lovely thread for our beloved Archives ♥
Thank You :)
-
YAY
Its gone sticky!
;);)
-
A well deserved stickiness :) Hopefully it makes people stick to Laurelin archives a lot! :D
-
Bloody Brilliant
I cannot honestly give enough praise to the website that so smoothly allows members of the Laurelin roleplaying community to learn, read and write about the adventures, songs and epic sagas of themselves and others in Tolkien's world.
A truly wonderful place, where creativity and imagination, friendship and rivalry and all the numerous joys of roleplaying on Laurelin come together. An utterly fantastic site and I cannot recommend it enough!
J.R.R. Tolkien would be proud.
-
I recently got my account approved on the site, and was wondering how I can upload my banner that must be 500x150 or such and such pixel length. I do not know how to make one with any dimensions, so if you could help please :)
-
I use paint on windows xp, I looked everywhere i could but didn't find anything on how to shape the banner to a specific pixel length and width :/
-
Is this still being actively administered? If so, how long ought I expect to wait for account approval?
And to the previous poster, in Paint, look up in the top menu bar, next to "Select". You will see a tool to re-size. Open this box, click the button that allows you to choose pixels rather than percent, and click the check box to maintain aspect ratio to turn that feature off. Type your values (590 x 110) in the boxes, and click the button. Done.
-
It is. But it takes a few days for the account approval (four or five days for me, if I remember right). Do not lose hope!
And welcome to Laurelin and the most immersive/true 'Middle-earth' LotRO has to offer! (imho)
-
Check your spam email box as well if you have not heard anything. Otherwise speak to one of the Admins in game, i know one of them is Calenon.

Greetings!
It's been a while since this last happened, but every good run must come to an end. We're once more being blocked by a number of email services including variations of Hotmail and Yahoo. This is a general heads up to users that it may be difficult to create new accounts on the site, especially with the addresses mentioned above but the extent of the issue may stretch beyond them. If you've registered and not received any emails from us, it's likely you're affected by this. We're keeping track of the accounts we fail to send mail to and will sort them out as soon as the block is lifted.
We're working with our host to clear this up, do not lose faith, the light of Laurelin will prevail over the darkness of anti-spam! :)

Over a long period of time now, we've been faced with massive spam, forcing us to deal with up to 100 spam accounts per day and thus severely slowing down the validation process, hurting the genuine users. To combat this we've implemented several defenses and countermeasures aimed at protecting the user registration form, how successful this will be remains to be seen. We're giving this heads up to let you know that this is going on and, though you shouldn't ever see these defenses, to implore you to report any problems you perceive as a result of it, through the contact form at the top right of the site or in a private message to me on the Archives.

As many of you may have noticed, the Archives are currently plagued by random "page not found" issues. The issues have so far gone away on their own within minutes, making it hard for us to diagnose and fix them, but we've still got tricks up our sleeves. So, in order to apply some generic fixes and tampering, the site will go down for maintenance tomorrow, Friday 10th of May, at 01:00 CEST - UTC/GMT +2. This may take several hours, we appreciate your patience.
Also, we are now on Twitter, where we will keep you all informed of things such as the one above, as well as answering any questions you may have. We can be found here: https://twitter.com/LaurelinArchive.

This looks really awesome. I'll definitely use it once I transition into activity on Laurelin now that I have my character created to save the name until I can really get into the server.
-
I shall not try to sound like a bitter old lady right now :) hehe
But as many of you know I am a huge fan of Laurelin Archives, and I love all the creative work I see there, whether is Stories, poems, videos, screenies and artwork. Recently (last months) I have seen an imflamation of work from Devian Art and other art sites, which I also follow. I recall lot of the originals and they do not have any attachment to Lotro and Laurelin Archives at all. Please be kind and credit the original artist when you post/rip pictures/artwork or media from other artists. This is quite important regards to Copyrights terms/issues and laws.
Why do I say this? Well as a musican and a drawer/painter myself, I know how much work that lies behind this, and I wouldnt be all to happy to see someone posted my work under their names without credit... If they credit me, I would be happy, it wouldnt be a problem at all.. This is all about common sense and respect..
This is perhaps most important: Remember that Laurelin Archives have members/artists that really PUT a lot of effort into their own artwork, and when they get drown into all the "spam" of unknowned pictures of unknowned professional artists, they will definetly loose motivation to post. This is not what Laurelin Archives should be about imo. It should be a site with a memberbase that use their own creativity and let the site blossom that way, in that way the site would be more interesting and look more professional.
Ok sorry my rant :) <3 I just ask that one should think twice before posting. atleast credit the original artist/site which I think is polite behaviour
-
*waves*
And I shall add my voice to that of the lovely Achy - I spent the last few years writing, painting, making music, sharing on the Laurelin Archives . I enjoyed my time there and the amazing creativity of this wonderful community but things are not as they used to be, sadly. As an artist myself, I have raised my concerns with Calenon about the site especially about copyrights infringements and artistic accreditation , and of course also images that have been posted and have little or nothing to do with Middle-earth but belong to other fantasy worlds.
Lovely people please try to understand, the Laurelin Archives is a 'joined Tolkien-inspired project' whom many of us have been working on for many years, and Calenon kindly run for us . Lately I do find myself sad , I want to continue my contribution but I am not sure how. Me, Achy, and many others have worked on our characters and profiles with love and dedication, sharing our artwork , music, and writings , and I am sad I feel sometime like I am not able to post and share .
Thanks for listening and gives Achy and Calenon a big *HUG*
-
As the two lovely Ladies have already said, this is fast becoming a real problem.
We all love LA of that there is no doubt, it has been at the heart of much of the creative writing and content for Laurelin for years, but of late there has been a surge of artwork/creative work posted up with no credits at all to their respective creators which is a VERY bad thing.
It really is just simple manners to credit the author/creator of any creative piece of work and only takes a few lines of text..
As has already been stated there are also potential legal issues to consider as well.. (although I am far from an expert on the subject)
Come on guys and gals, it takes just a minute of your time when posting on LA to show some basic courtesy, to link/credit an artist or author whose work you are using.
Keep up the great work Calenon LA rocks!
-
You're all right of course, and it seems to be a recurring issue, coming back and going away in waves. It really is no big deal to post a disclaimer to make it clear the image isn't of your own making, even if you don't know who made it. I was told a good while back that there are simple ways of searching the web for similar images, but I can't remember what they were now, maybe someone else here knows. Those processes can be used to find the original artist.
The rules of the site are pretty straightforward on this issue. Credit the original artist whenever possible.
PS. Thanks for the hugs and wellwishes! :)

Circumstances did indeed interfere as we were left without internet for the duration of the vacation, leaving us unable to respond to any emails. We apologise for this. Normal service is now resumed, however, and we are currently working hard to get through the backlog of accounts and emails. If you've registered or contacted us in the last week and have not been responded to within a day from now, something is probably wrong with the email correspondence (or username in the case of accounts). If this applies to you, please contact us again so we're aware of the issue. We can make contact in-game when all else fails. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Logged into the dear archives for a little sentimental browsing. Noticed that the Gûr Edhellen link was gone, sadly. I can only apologize for the lack of updates that I've given it, but will endeavour for its return to the site.
Keep up the great work, as always, Calenon.

Greetings!
Once again, there's a wave of uncredited images being posted on the site. For the sake of the original artists and to keep us out of legal trouble, we insist that you use the Source field properly to specify where you found the image and/or who made it. Uncredited images will be taken down.
Also, unedited photographs are no longer allowed for immersion reasons. If you have a photograph you wish to use, edit it with filters for example to make it look more like a painting, and post it as an Artscreen. Remember to also source the original photo, same as above.
We hope for your understanding. Keep enjoying the Archives! :)

Just as a note for those who wish to make any photographs look more like a painting, may I suggest using 'FotoSketcher'. It's a handy, completely free piece of software that will turn photographic images into stylised 'paintings' - watercolours, oil paintings, pencil sketches - there are quite a few options. Might be helpful for those without Photoshop/GNU Image Manipulation Program or experience in using image manipulation software. Or the lazy. Like me.

December is drawing to a close and we want to take some time to thank you all for your continued support of the Archives over the years and for years to come.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Sincerely, The Laurelin Archives Webteam

This bug is well known but unfortunately without a permanent solution. It comes and goes randomly, usually sticking around for 15-30 minutes. If you encounter it try again later, should it still be there after giving it time then contact us at contact@laurelinarchives.org with the name of the character you wish to register (the name I'd use to send you a /tell in-game) as well as what email address you want used and we will set up the account manually.

The Laurelin Archives is back online after maintenance
An update of the Text Editor was long overdue and the new version is now live .
The new version of the text editor does not support freelinking for external sites .
Freelinking to other users of the LA/Kins profiles etc works like before :)
Double-brackets no longer support web addresses. Existing such links need to be edited with basic HTML or BBCode to work
If your text editor looks strange , please remember to empty your browser 's chache and try again.
This update was necessary to close some security loophoples.
We are continuing to monitor the site and work on improvements.
Thank You for your understanding

Just a little extra note :)
Old links may now display as [Bad Link] after the update
if that is the case you can fix it by using some simple html code
example :

If you need any assistance do get in touch with us , we will be happy to help :)

Mos you
Mos you
So who and what is the brother of the pie,
djesi brother to Belgrade by the Scythians,
when and brother while you were hungry was the pie,
If you barte was at the pool or
You were with a girl in the garden,
Why were you in the zoo,
when you were at the Wall of Death where people ravens,
they are ravens they crow,
but Docic apostles who were elected, and
they will rule this world and the spiritual
the rest of this small planet
people do not need to hate to be like,
and meat sometimes have to Poso,
me some love and some hate me, and
it does not matter to me is the point,
does not need to fight to be people signing peace,
Is that a brother like to eat cheese or
Perhaps a little fry potatoes or
You're a good man all ustrvari and watch and say:
alas see a good man,
and some say vidiga this is evil and the sun was stealing
then it sucks you gotta be honest brother
and to say all "oooo yeah" when Djura Jaksic or Dositeljeva Obradovic
both were nice and they were spiritually blind
they were so ahead of time, and sowed the seed lot
all this is so is not easy and I may drink brother SINALCO
Maybe I'll go into space
or perhaps it is now in my soul unrest
I'm not my brother to koroziram
I'm not my brother when the engine is to soup up
I'm not my brother to kill people
I'm not my brother to be a hooligan
see how beautiful this day
JHA'm sunny and cheerful
Perhaps I have a dream and your personal plan
"Ooo yeah" should pay for electricity
the mazes themselves after the margarine on bread
and so should,
If you want to be someone and something
you must set yourself spiritually to have a material business
you can not you have financially if you lost duhvno
you have to have something expensive that other children
it would be such that all the first
everything else is not the first
everything is a third that is when a man has luck
Trains are moving and I will not live more vako
father to be in a different light
where there is more light
and perhaps will be a lot of rooster
roosters brother poju at half past four
and they may be all the people it is natural
It is the nature of it is something that we can not understand
why roosters poju at half past four
Perhaps people should stand up at half past four
and to feed chickens
Perhaps they will help to give them eggs
NOT be hungry
if there's never had chicken you'll be miserable, you will be hungry
then will you bitching
the concrete does not have to work
then the house brothers built from the ground up
nemozes'm building a house without windows
and after foundation
In truth I think because you lost consciousness
if you're on the ground reduced then the prank
You are in fact a man who has no spiritual consciousness
you can not be thinking about if you have no idea
bake and tell the children I do not get confused
if you do this you have to talk to him I conspired
FREE because you were in there the devil hid
He has tried me when Daf Veder as a man through the stars
or Luke Skywalker says day
see how beautiful this sunny day and someone watching us from above

We are taking a few days off to regroup and plan the site future.
Thank You for your understanding.
We are looking forward to be back with you soon :)

I'm saying this in a PM, but I thought I might as well say it more publicly: I really hope LA continues, and in more or less the vein it's operated in so far! I think it's a great site, and I'm sorry the last few days have been so crazy for you folks.
-
Thank you for your support it is really appreciated.
-
I would be sad to see LA gone :( It is a great site for the community, and not just the recent one but it has the legacy of many years of players in it! I very much hope it stays open
(or maybe I am panicking too soon, sorry!)
-
Hey Calenon, Amorey and Khalis, I just wanted to say that my thoughts are with the three of you. You have created and maintained such a wonderful site with LA, for so many of us to express our creativity in word and art. A HUGE 'Thank you' and *Hugs* from me..and most likely from many others.
Please take whatever time you need to sort things out. My only hope is that LA will be back in due course. If I can help in any way...you know where I am.
