Well it explains the "Lucky" aspect of it. I've often wondered if it affected instance loot from chests...

Anecdotally, I was have a conversations with a PuG, about whether or not it affected the loot, one of the guys in the groups said there was no way. When I equipped it and opened the chest there was a Worn Symbol of Celebrimbor.

I guess I will be wearing it during all the Epic Quest stuff from now on...

I was unaware of the connection with the Extra Life campaign. That's a cool little community tie-in, and whoever had the idea should get an extra pat on the back.

Interesting. I do believe it is the reason my main finally got the skeletal horse out of that chest in the haunted burrow. I also think it helps during the treasure hunt. That or I'm just lucky with that event.

Not trolling. I made it very clear what it would and would not include in the post stating the goal.

And it does reveal several things. And with a little thought it should actually tell you quite a bit about both what it does now and will do in the future (that's another tip off BTW).

I bring it out of my vault for the treasure hunting festival thing...one of the dwarves, if you notice, suggests to take something lucky into the fields. So thats when I bring mine out, thank goodness I kept it! I wonder what other hidden powers it has

Chance of getting on stage in the theater comes to mind. It could also make the wood trolls drop more wood for that quest, I suppose. Oh, and it could affect the gift boxes as well.

And, well... I guess I'm trading my Great River bauble out for the horseshoe until I complete the new Epics. :P

What in the world could it effect in the Epic Story??

I suppose it depends on your definition of trolling....in my book, dropping something vaguely concrete, yet still intentionally opaque enough to incite wild speculation, conversation, and the occasional fisticuffs, knowing full well the consequences, qualifies. :p

Oh no! I've chosen that as a reward on both my mini and guard, but finally chose another reward on my rk (my now main), thinking it didn't actually do much good :( bah, humbug!

Now I just need to figure out what it does for the Epic quests... can we reveal that when we hit $8 or $10k? :P

Come to think of it...

- A: It was introduced at the start of Volume III. Well, in Book 2 of Volume III.
(Thus, one would think it effects that Volume and forwards).

- B: It's a horseshoe. Where are we headed? To Rohan. Which is full of? Horses.

That said, I can't think of any points in particular where the Epic had anything relying on luck, aside from maybe the drop chances on quest items. The vast majority of Volume III is travelogue with an occasional bit of combat...

Some food for thought:

One of the NPC's at the Treasure Hunt event said something to the effect of "one should always carry a lucky item in their pocket, like a horse shoe."

I kept my horse shoe pocket item equipped nearly the entire event. In total I'd estimate I found over 60 huge dig sites (no life, treasure hunted non stop - and I stopped counting when I got over 50)

This however did not seem to have any bearing on getting a mount out of the huge site, as I was at huge site #55 or so when a cave claw steed finally appeared. My character that got a treasure laden mount is a level 7 who obviously does not have the horse shoe.

My guess is it has something to do with horses. Reduced chance of getting hit by mobs? 1% faster? with Rohan being based upon horses, the epic storyline involves horses no doubt. Probably the horse goes faster during the festival horse races?

Haven't missed it, yet! The event takes place on Oct 20th. You've still got time to get a donation in and pick up the titles and a shot at the other incentives up for grabs.

If the horseshoe actually does do something, you guys are total jerks for making it a one-time only quest reward that you have the choice of not even getting in the first place.

Congratulations on reaching the $6,000 goal! And thank you for making good on the reveal. That's more information that I ever expected to hear about the horseshoe in any sort of official capacity. As you said, it's not a point by point reveal, but it does imply some interesting things. Of course, it also creates lots of new questions.

Still, I'm just happy to learn that it definitely does something! Now we have a better idea where to look for effects. Consider me re-intrigued! And thanks again for the info - very interesting!

It's been equipped on my guardian ever since he got it...

Edit: I might be a liar, apparently I swapped it out for something else. Do not remember doing this. LOL He had it equipped for over a year at least, anyway.

Choices have consequence is my point. It is this way in every aspect of life. Some consequences may be large or small, monumental or of no meaning at all.

This is something that has very little effect on a small part of the game. If it were anything majorly important, the playerbase would have figured it out by now.

I'm afraid I have a low tolerance for items with 'mystery powers' so I think I've actually trashed it on several toons already. Learning now that it benefits "something" during "parts" of the epic quest line really doesn't make me regret my decision.

I think the fundraising effort you guys are doing is epic btw. Great to see it exceeding your own expectations!

Sit back and think about it: why would they take the time to create an item that is useless? Everything has a purpose.

That quest gives you a choice between the shoe and one of four Legacy of $stat scrolls which CAN be obtained by other methods. Why would anyone NOT pick up the one time item?

I'm still imagining that there is a devoted Horseshoe Developer, whose cubicle is literally shrouded in mystery and spider-webs and whatnot. Perhaps an intern got this lucky project. I can also imagine the assault a bunch of the team made on the cubicle to retrieve this information. Hopefully some in LARP costumes.

Thanks for the hints, though - there will no doubt be many whipping out their lucky pocket items come Winter Festival, and hopefully a chunky thread of testing and further theories here on the forum.

Edited to add: I do think there's some use for it, I just did an Isenguard Epic quest today that mentioned the horseshoe again. I don't think it would keep cropping up like that if it was completely useless. I might start carrying it around with me just in case.

That very well could be true, but even an enigma - Tom Bombadil is far from useless.

Yes, exactly! And if there does turn out to be some specific use for it down the road, it'll be posted all over the place right away and the mystery will be gone. That'll be a little sad, I think.

If "it does more now than when it was first introduced","as time goes on it grows more powerful" and that's "a tip off for what it will do in the future" suggests whatever it does is linked to level, how precisely that relates to festivals and epic quests ........ erm dunno, yet

So for those of who have accidently bartered it for needed vault space ect. what does this mean... will there be a chance one day to recover our lost horeshoe without having to alt another toon to that epic?? The Speculation is killing me :D

I ran it not long ago on my RK... no horseshoe. Didn't see it. Never had the horseshoe slotted on the other toons who have done it either... does it work when you redo the instance through a reflecting pool? Might head onto one of my old toons and try

Thank goodness none of my characters have done Vol 3. Book 1 (I skipped it :P)! The only thing I can think about for the horse shoe is....

Our War-steeds have a busted Horseshoe. Replace it with this one and gain something-something as a buff/something. ;)

Not that I know of. That glimpse at the top of the stairs seems to be triggered reliably regardless of the horseshoe.

Note that he didn't indicate *how* *much* good it would do, so your assessment is still probably correct.

As for the Winterfest...between the plot lines and forced emote consumables...it's entirely avoidable.

I saw him and DEFINITELY did not have the horseshoe even in the vault on that character. And we know who it was from the story line later when Saruman admits to being there and deceiving the Dwarf.

One way to look at it is... Why not? Get players to select and carry a useless item in place of something useful will reduce stat inflation making future designs easier. Of course, then it wouldn't be useless...to the devs (even if it is useless to the players and characters).

On the other hand, it could just be a joke...and--therefore--actually useless. Or, given the posts here, "useful", but with such a minor effect that it is, for all practical purposes, useless.

Said cubicle is probably the model for the Abandoned House in Stangard...a useless location and you can only get into if you are Kindred with the Stangard faction.

Well, once again such a thread brings evidence that Erebrandir's Horseshoe has always done one thing: keep the community guessing about what it does. :D

Kidding aside; as has been pointed out by someone else in here, is that during the treasure hunt event, a dwarf in the field mentions that "you should carry something lucky, like a horseshoe" when digging for treasure. It might, or might not help with getting better rewards and/or finding the huge digside. Within Rohan it might help with getting the better rewards from war-band encounters.

The fact is that it might improve your luck, but does not guarentee anything. Some people believe in it, some don't and others are plain indifferent towards it. Personally, I find luck an unreliable factor that I tend to rule out as much as possible. And I know that a horseshoe won't help with that as carrying one around undermines my previous statement. :)

That's cool. Wait until I get rid of all of mine to finally tell us what it does.

When you do an instance with Nar, Noona and Elrohir(?) to find out what happened to Noona's brother, there is a spiral ramp you can go up to get to the highest level of the mine. When you get to that level you can see a wizard walking in the mine for a few seconds (the ramp will be behind you just after you enter the instance).

I did that instance less than a month ago with a toon that does not have the horseshoe, and I still saw the wizard.

Pretty confident that the answer is going to be no if you didn't choose the horseshoe as the reward for the quest, and it doesn't seem like they'll give the option to recover it if you've lost it either. But if you didn't pick it as your reward, then the answer will definitely be a no on whether or not they'll give it back to you again.

You don't need the horseshoe to see it. You just need to know where to look and to look soon enough.

The horseshoe, what does it do? Take up valuable vault space. :P I think I've still kept it on my main though I've been tempted many a time to just get rid of the thing. I didn't end up taking it on any alt.

Have like an epic vendor, kinda like the loot vendors in angmar! That'd be awesome.

(And change the epic quest to auto-give the horseshoe, instead of having to choose between it and the scrolls. People in their haste see it at the top of the list and don't realize their mistake til too late.....)

A vague non-explanation isn't going to get it out of the vault. It's going to sit there until the full effect is disclosed. At that point, there is a very high chance I will destroy it if the effect is garbage.

Well, I can wait. Surely the horseshoe can as well.

That is the exact power of Saruman, to fool weak minded individuals like yourself. Saruman wasn't at Nar's Peak, Gun Ain was. Saruman never did away with Nar, and in fact there is a deed (and quest?) to go back and visit him afterwards to make sure he is still alive. Title is "Thoughtful Friend".

The affect on festival events will still be difficult to ascertain as so much is based on the RNG, even if the horseshoe goves +10% to be picked for the stage, determining this will be a nightmare, same with the fall festival poorly hidden chest. This isn't really what concerns me though, as the festivals are just fluff, if I get around to them, I get around to them, but they've been boring the heck out of me since they haven't gotten any real attention in years (same old, same old, increased rewards cost for more grind).

For the epic though, will it just change text? This should be fairly easy to ascertain. However, if it changes quest rewards or drop chance on rares during an isntance, that could be interesting and a piss off a lot of people who tossed it.

We're finally going to start getting answers for the horseshoe?!

After all the time spent obsessing over its possible purpose, I convinced myself that I have to equip the horseshoe every 108 minutes or something catastrophic will happen to Middle-Earth.

I was in the first internet thread on the subject 9 years ago, and sometimes I feel the need to inflict this brainworm on unsuspecting people as cosmic retribution for the hours I spent searching.

Still, it would be a great item description for this dang horseshoe.

This is what I would like to know! I'm a bit irritated with the whole "horseshoe" mess. It's been how long and they're just now saying there is actual power within the horseshoe and that power will increase over time? Why not just explain that in the first place?? :confused:

It's not possible, the way that the item is given as a selectable reward with an unclear description implies that item may do something, but it won't be ever crucial. It can't be crucial. And its secret can't be revealed entirely, ever.

Lets say if the effect of the horseshoe is +2% of horse speed after RoR, The next day we will have several frustrated people who choose one of legacies instead the horseshoe.

I've seen these "secret items" in other games in the past (my memory is becoming rusty), the best advice is: always get them and never delete them.

After reading that page, I have to suggest a new item description for the Horseshoe:

"One can say that the Horseshoe doesn't do anything, but even that's not entirely true. I mean, it really doesn't do -anything-. It doesn't even doesn't do anything. 9 years and dozens of threads on multiple internet forums...I, for one, am willing to accept a 1-word difference. :p

I can see how it would affect festival events which depend on the RNG, but I can't see what effect it might have on Epics quests. Suggestions?

You know, I took the horseshoe as a quest reward when Volume III first began a couple of years ago. I didn't have much need for the stat scrolls and the aspect of a secret but important item was enticing. It's been in my backpack ever since and, figuring it could have something to do with the RNG during events, I would generally equip it while doing fluff events - festival games, fishing, crafting. I figure that it can't hurt, right?

Yet every now and then, I would still get comments. Someone seeing me with the horseshoe and chuckling. Folk in my kinship back then would playfully hound those who did take the horseshoe, bashing them for falling for one of Turbine's "tricks". Others would tell tales about how they took the horseshoe, found it did nothing, and immediately sold it to a vendor for the 9 silver it was worth. Now, after all these years, some of those same people are upset that they didn't take the horseshoe. Others are angry that the "powers" of the horseshoe were not adequately defined from the beginning. And now I'm the one that can sit back and chuckle.

The moral of my story? It's good to have your faith rewarded.
