The PC downloader/installer for the Bullroarer Public Preview Client is available:

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have upgraded your MacOS to the newest version of Catalina, the LOTRO client will not work. This includes Bullroarer. For more information please refer to this announcement MacOS Catalina Compatibility and threads in the Mac Technical Support for

Please note: Bullroarer is a Test server. We wipe all data from this server between tests and at other times as our testing requires.

Some Notes:
- This should not overwrite your existing Bullroarer install if you install by defaults.
- If you decide to use a custom install, please take note of where the installer wants to install the game by default before changing the path. If it is installing anywhere other than 'The Lord of the Rings Online - Public Preview' by default then please let us know!
- This is a full installer package. If you already have a working Bullroarer client, you do not need to use this installer.
Akamai Netsession

The Akamai NetSession client allows us to quickly and reliably deliver fresh LOTRO client installations to you, and assist in the repair of missing or corrupted files in current game installations. The client utilizes Akamai’s large network of edge servers to deliver this content to you from a location which is deemed geographically closest to you, and ensures that we are able to efficiently and effectively get you what you need to play LOTRO. Although some versions of the Akamai NetSession client used by other software providers utilize Peer-to-Peer technology, we have decided not to use P2P for LOTRO. What this means is that Akamai NetSession will NOT use peer-to-peer when delivering LOTRO-related content.
Once you install the LOTRO client, or patch your game, it will be possible to uninstall Akamai NetSession from your computer, and NetSession will not reinstall unless it is necessary to deliver a deleted file or a fresh installation. Typical game updates will not require the use of Akamai NetSession.

Please post any feedback about the installers that you may have in this thread, and please report any bugs you encounter.

Thanks for posting a Mac Bullroarer Client again.

OSX Yosemite 10.10.3

The Mac Client download has at least one, possibly two problems related to Apple's Gatekeeper software.

1- Upon launching the file: "The Lord of the Rings Online™.app" verification of the Disk image begins and it immediately pops up with

"The Lord of the Rings Online™.app" can't be opened because the idenity of the developer cannot be confirmed."

This is with Apple's default security settings: System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General -- "Allow apps downloaded from "Mac App Store and identified developers only."

2- Simultaneously a second pop-up from Mac Help appears: "The app has been modified or damaged"

If you acknowledge the initial pop-up by clicking "OK" the Security & Privacy panel will immediately add: "The Lord o...nline™.app" was blocked from opening because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed. A button is provided "Open Anyway."

Verification of the Disk image continues and adds the pop-up ""The Lord of the Rings Online™.app" is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it.
(Should you click "show web page, it goes to Turbine.com, rather than LOTRO.com)

Clicking Open allows to activity to continue until it crashes to the desktop:

Process: lotrolauncher [43971]
Path: /Volumes/VOLUME/lotroLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/lotrolauncher

Correction on crash -- as one can notice from above, being a dunce, I tried to re-launch the installer from the .dmg file instead of the /Applications directory. Naturally it will crash as the .dmg file is read only!
Duh!

Launching from the /Applications directory, the download proceeds as expected after the Gatekeeper bypass indicated above.

I'm trying to install the Bullroarer client (low resolution to start) and Akamai started downloading several files, then started failing consistentyly with "Unable to decrypt and de-serialize data downloaded from the server."

Do I need to delete the directory and start over? Once it started giving me this, it keeps coming up with it, including after I reboot to make sure there are no loose connections hanging around.

I keep trying to access the server but I keep getting errors. I spend 1-2hrs downloading the server and then when I try to get on it tells me that there was an error connecting to the server. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Right maybe I am too blind, but I tried to find out whether Bullroarer is actually up and running. No such luck.
My launcher gets stuck at 44% and the the error accours.
I tried the Adminstrator start and so on. No Change.

So is the server up? Because it worked just fine last week when had my first look aorund in Minas Tirith.

if it worked fine for you last week maybe a file or 2 got corrupted or didn't download/install properly with the last patch to build 3.

Mine was similar: "C:\Program Files\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online - Bullroarer".
(I'm on a 32-bit platform, which probably accounts for the different Program Files directory.)

I was interested in trying this until I ran into Akamai netsession interface. I don't see a benefit for me, the user, that justifies that enormous application. After three hours it still hadn't finished downloading and it appears that I can't open Bullroarer without installing it.

Hmm, you might want to consider how you use and download the regular game, since it uses the same tech for transferring the files to your computer.

And guys, Tybur only want to know your INSTALLDIR if you alter it, so your reports about using the DEFAULT INSTALLDIR are useless.

I have just restarted the BR client for the 8th time, after once again deleting the temporary files. To cut to the chase: basically every time I have downloaded the first 1.39gb of the installer, something happens (during the download?) that causes the installer to start throwing up 'unable to decrypt and deserialize data', and fail. I have no idea what is causing this; at best I could provide a list of the most recently downloaded files. But from the looks of it, I doubt I will be able to install the BR client (both with and without using akamai).

It fails consistently (now for an 8th time) just after downloading the intro cinematic. I doubt that this file is causing the issue, though, because copying the file from my regular lotro installation doesn't help at all.

I just downloaded the Bullroarer installer, and selected custom installation. The default install path is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online - Bullroarer

If on PC suggest you check that you have at least 40GB free space on the target partition
- if installer failed and cannot continue suggest uninstall Beta Client then manually delete the install folder and not the normal LOTRO folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online - Bullroarer

- then run a disk defragmenter on that same partition (no need if using SSD or USB drive)
- use a fresh install from first post of this thread but this time select "custom" and change the target path to a different partition or folder
example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\_BETA_\The Lord of the Rings Online - Bullroarer
E:\Program Files (x86)\_BETA_\The Lord of the Rings Online - Bullroarer
- close all other internet APPs such as email or games or Skype ... to prevent a corrupted download
- walk away from the computer for 1 hour
- allow all Firewall prompts during this process
- once the BETA Client is installed and then started and finally Updated you can close it then relaunch Beta Client to test for further updates, once that's done suggest you now uninstall the "Akamai" downloader.

What am I doing wrong? I clicked the link for PC download (http://content.turbine.com/sites/cli...tropreview.exe), then clicked on the file I received. This then repeated the download of the same file and labeled it (1). I tried it again, got the same file which was then labeled (2). I know I haven't had my usual IV of coffee, but I should be able to do this. Any suggestions?

I don't know what went wrong for you, but I can download the installer file and when I open it, it asks me if I want to repair/remove my existing installation but it doesn't download the file again. Which operating system are you running? And have you tried deleting the downloaded files and downloading it again from the original site?

Got a problem.

Just download the installer, and installed it, no problem. I start the launcher and it started to upgrade
The problem : I have a pop up "Akamai End User License Agrement" every 30 seconds (each time the same) requiring me to accept.
If I click no the launcher quit. Means I have to stand in front of my computer clikcing accept every 30 second ! what the hell

I'm stuck with Windows 10. Trust me, I want to go back to 8.1. Yes, I did try deleting the files I downloaded, then tried again. Same results. :(

Just found an old link to Bullroarer DL. It's working now.

I had the same problem. I tried even to install Akamai client separately, but this installation cannot be completed.
I switched to normal HTTP download, everything downloaded perfectly, however now I have an error: "Unable to decrypt and de-serialize the data downloaded from the server".
The TTEPatchClient.log looks ok (everything is "Successfully opened").

How strange...I have none of that, it just updated.

It was suggested some time ago that uninstalling akamai and deleting the akamai files allowed the patcher to repair itself and reinstall those (was fix for a different problem though). It might help!

Hello,

I'm getting this error constantly: [Can not decrypt and serialize the data downloaded from the server].

I have a very slow download speed, I've been slowly chugging along for the past two days to even download the client, but eventually it keeps doing this.

From other threads I've tried removing certain folders and redownloading a few gigs at a time. But nothing seems to work.

Anyone have a clue how to solve this?

I am having this same issue.. and hope to have it fixed before the test today..

I am currently trying the delete solution by Finglonger_uk: posted 21 mar 2012
there's 2 possible fixes for your error but first try restarting the launcher, making sure the icon has gone form the task tray and from task manager before restarting

then if you still have the same problem browse to your lotro install folder which defaults to c:\program files\turbine\the lord of the rings online\
program files(x86) on 64bit windows
find the 4 folders patches, forward, bindat and raw. if any of the folders contain anything delete the contents
note: some of the folders may already be empty
restart lotro

update: I tried the solution above, NOT all the groups were found, but there were a lot of vignettes updated. the launcher started but hung at the same point.. /sigh

Thank you, but I do not have Akamai, I uninstalled it long time ago.
The repeating EULA is a result of an Akamai installation failure (Akamai fails install so it tries again, hence another EULA and so on in the loop).
As I have written - I even tried to install Akamai client before using launcher, and I cannot install it - installation fails.

I was hoping that someone from Turbine will look into the matter (hence log), but I suppose, no one checks forums during test day, on Saturday :(

Oh, one more thing - switching off antivirus software and firewall did not help at all.

My LotRO-Bullroarer is stuck where it says Installing Pre-Reqs,it is 4 hours like this...Do i have to delete it and download it again..??

I've been trying to download beta game for the last 3 days. I've used the link posted in this thread for PC and it always gets stuck on downloading client_cell_3.dat and it just gets stuck at that point (around 2% of the total download). Tried removing files and starting again, tried completely clearing everything and using the link again and tried disabling firewall and anti-virus and it still gets stuck at that file.

Edit: I've uninstalled and installed it several times without problems in the last few years but this time it's the first time I get this issue.

After downloading a get a popup saying something like this client is older than the version currently installed (I don't have Bullroarer installed previously). Has there been a new download link since the one listed in this thread?

I'm getting this same pop-up. It says, "The previously installed software is newer than the software you are trying to install. Are you sure you want to continue?" This happens right after selecting language, so nothing has even begun to install yet. I have windows 10 so I'm wondering if the client needs to be updated. I have not installed it because I'm afraid it's trying to overwrite my live lotro client, which is in high res.

Any advice or help on this is appreciated.

I went thru with the install, it doesn't seem to have changed anything with my main install, it made a separate desktop icon. The Bullroarer client still installs under "Turbine" on the start menu tho, whereas the regular loader now installs under "StandingStoneGames"

I can log in and it says that Bullroarer is open but when I hit play, I get this pop up.

Can’t open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them. The program will now exit. [201]

Any clue as to why this is happening and how I can fix it?

My launcher just freezes immediately on start up. It says "installing pre-requisites" and that's where it freezes. I tried re-installing it from a fresh download, but that didnt help either. Anyone who knows a solution? it worked just fine this morning

I'm also getting that. Is it because the server is currently down?

EDIT: The server is up, but I am still getting the same message as Kravec and Vodhr. Is there a solution? I am on Windows 10.

EDIT: Devs, if you're reading this, I think the problem is with the choice to download the "high textures" or not. The first time I chose that option, and got the error. This time I downloaded what was supposedly the "non high texture" version, and it worked. But it still gave me the high textures, which I believe is now the default for the client?

Still getting 201 error

The server is up today so I tried getting in. Unfortunately I'm still getting the 201 error. It's coming up after I log in and am put in line to get on the server. Does anyone know of a fix for this that doesn't require downloading pricey/suspect software?

Same issue here, been reading quite a bit about the error and turns out the most common solution is to rename some of the data files, however in my case the data files are missing :( (even after 2 reinstalls)

Done applying patch(s) ... now what?

So have gotten to the point (I think) where all the downloading is done but it now seems to be stuck. I now see the following:

installing bullroarer to target drive rather than default location

Are there instructions anywhere on how to install Bullroarer client to a designated drive rather than the default drive? When I tried to install it I saw no choice.

i downloaded bullroarer today it installed fine but i got launcher screen i logged in and clicked bullroarer server and it said getting i line to connect then it just closed back to desktop never had this happen before

Although some versions of the Akamai NetSession client used by other software providers utilize Peer-to-Peer technology, we have decided not to use P2P for LOTRO. What this means is that Akamai NetSession will NOT use peer-to-peer when delivering LOTRO-related content.
Once you install the LOTRO client, or patch your game, it will be possible to uninstall Akamai NetSession from your computer, and NetSession will not reinstall unless it is necessary to deliver a deleted file or a fresh installation. Typical game updates will not require the use of Akamai NetSession.

If you are having trouble opening the links, try right-clicking on it and selecting 'Copy link address'.

Then paste the link in a new browser tab. That should get you on your way.

This is a common issue with our Chrome users (and some other browsers as well).

Can't seem to even get the client, everytime I click on the link a new tab instantly opens and closes before i can even see it. anyone know why this is happening?

Technical Problems

I'm also having the same problem that a lot of folks have reported here. So, the initial install went fine, no problems there.

However now that I'm trying to launch the bullroarer version of the game, it says "an update error has occurred: unable to decrypt and deserialize the data downloaded from the server"

I know from prior experiences trying to troubleshoot things that looking at the logs folder can provide insight for the developers and anyone else trying to troubleshoot...So I went to the liberty of copying what was written in the log file

To my knowledge I'm fairly certain the preview server is still live, and I was able to use the copy tool on the live client to copy over 2 of my characters; however I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why this isn't working. I've admittedly not played on Bullroarer on this specific computer before (current computer is less than a year old) but I've done various betas before and up until now, never had a problem. If someone has ideas on how to fix it or whatnot...I'd appreciate it (also willing to discuss the issue via email or whatever if here is not the most appropriate)

I am also getting the same "failed" message. Win 10 system. I downloaded the non-high res because my internet is so slow (I get 3 Mbps absolute max, which means usually around 2.5), that trying to do the high res it takes way too long given how short your sessions are. occasionally it will say that patchclient.dll::Check data files failed. It does work on downloading if I have it try the high res.

Hopefully something can be fixed by the next run! I won't be able to let it sit overnight to download the high res, so will probably have to miss this round.
