Why shouldn't Gristlebite spawn inside a cave? There was a RT in Central Gondor that spawned in the cave up by Ethring in the Ringló Vale.

Did you check with Horn in the cave up in Wildermore? I remember that being used to advance the quest.

I think the opposite. The ash farms make it way easier. Just follow them around and collect what you need.
