Well, if we're hazarding guesses for the sake of eliciting a hint*, I'll say...

    What is Minas Ithil?
Well, I suppose you could always say "flame resistant sunglasses" if you prefer that to "shoes"

    What is Fornost?
Called by the elves Fornost Erain, and by Hobbits of the Shire Norbury. The former capital of the Arnorian kingdom, destroyed by the Witch King, it lies at the end of the "Greenway".
And group of hobbit archers did go up the greenway to help in the war, though none returned to the Shire. And no tale tells of their fate.
I do believe you guys can get this without hints, and Boraxxe is not far off with his guess. Though no elves ever dwelt in the North Downs...

I appreciate your faith in our remembrance.
About your comment: I went with Fornost because I read this while perusing LOTRO WIKI.com:

The Hobbits called Fornost the "King’s Norbury," a translation of the city’s formal Elvish title of Fornost Erain (literally, "northern fortress of kings").
Not a lie, or even a mistake, because they are just relaying the "history" of the name of the city. They do not say anywhere that elves dwelt there, (that was my mistaken assumption) so you are right.
A lesson I must repeatedly relearn: The internet is not "The Text".

    I shall endeavor to persevere.

OK, I have another guess: Gandalf and Legolas discussing the area they were traveling through in The Fellowship Of The Ring:

‘There is a wholesome air about Hollin. Much evil must befall a country before it wholly forgets the Elves, if once they dwelt there.’

'That is true,’ said Legolas. `But the Elves of this land were of a race strange to us of the silvan folk, and the trees and the grass do not now remember them: Only I hear the stones lament them: Deep they delved us, fair they wrought us, high they builded us; but they are gone. They are gone. They sought the Havens long ago.’
    What is Eregion? or Hollin?

Though, that says nothing about Men dwelling there, so I am not sure I am not barking up the wrong tree, again...

Its been a week since I posted, and unfortunately no one has gotten it. And I fear my hints are leading further away from the actual answer. So I'm going to give the answer:

What is Lake Evendim (or Lake Nenuial)?

    1) Elves lead by Galadriel and Celeborn dwelt here for a time, as was the fallen North-kingdom. The Hobbits went up the (Green)way to the aid of Fornost.
    2) Evendim is Hobbitish for dusk (Nenuial meaning Lake Twilight)
    3) Arthedain was first defeated by Angmar at Fornost, then Gondorians and Elves defeated the Witch-king
Apologies if the hints were too vague. I will now hold onto the Jacket, "until the riddler returns."

    And when will that be?

I think it was a fine riddle. We just weren't clever enough (this time)...grin.

Well, it looks as if AConyl has given up and we need a new riddle.

    I will post one:

This item sounds like a mix of Noah's boat and 14 pounds.

A strain of undauntedness runs in the family
    Similar to his youngest son
The powers of Mordor find their hopes defeated
    Due to some plain hobbit-sense.

Another Double Jeopardy! Answers should mention both a specific character and an event.
    Enjoy!

(not 100% sure I am reading this correctly but....)
Who is Hamfast Gamgee and his encounter with the Nazgul where he perpetuated the ruse that Frodo was moving to Bucklebury (and his reasons are none of your business!)? He was also then able to tell Sam of the encounter as Sam and Frodo were setting out.

    ...when in doubt...twirl...
Crickhollow: Wisa/Weesa, Elvisa/Elvysa and many other Elv's, Reaboj, Sunberry, Altheah, Ooma's and some others. Landroval: Sunnberry, Raynbel, Starberry, Burraberry, Sugarree, Magnolia, and a bunch of others too. Anor: Elviska, Wisa, Elvisa, and more. Laurelin: Sunberry, Wisaberry, Elvisa Gwaihir: Sunberry. Belegaer: Sunberry.
Sirannon: Sunberry. Treebeard: Wisa,Moonberry, Sunberry, Wisaberry, Elvisa and more. Brandywine: Raynberry
