Section 1.7.4 Tom and the Ring

Goldberry sang many songs for them.

'Show me the precious ring,' said Tom.

Tom spun the ring up in the air, and it vanished.

Tom handed the ring back to Frodo.

Frodo slipped the ring on to make sure it was still the same ring.

Some Illustrations from Chapter 8: Fog on the Barrow-Downs
Section 1.8.1 Into the Barrow Downs

The next morning, the ponies were frisky.

Tom came out of the house to see them off.

    They rode off.

Goldberry called to them from the top of the hill. They looked around in all directions.

'Make haste while the sun shines,' Goldberry advised them.

    They rode into the Barrow-downs.

Like a shallow saucer with a green mounded rim.

The hobbits ate and drank on the cool east side of the standing stone.

The hobbits fell asleep in the afternoon and awoke again at sunset.

The setting sun sank into a white sea of fog.

They packed up as quickly as they could.

When they reached the bottom of the hill, they mounted.

    Section 1.8.2 The Barrow Wight

    Their going was very slow.

Frodo thought he saw the way out. 'Follow me!' he shouted back.

    Two huge standing stones.

His pony reared, and Frodo fell off.

Frodo shouted for the others, who had not followed him.

    Where are you?

The fog melted away. A great barrow stood there.

Frodo fell to his knees and looked up to see a barrow wight.

A grip stronger and colder than iron seized him.

Frodo awoke again in the dark, lying on the cold stone floor of a great barrow.

Lying beside him were Sam, Pippin, and Merry.

In that last scene, Tolkien had written that Sam, Pippin and Merry were dressed in white. Later on, Tolkien stated that they were dressed in rags. I'm not that good of an artist. So I opted for leeching out the color of their garments, the life vibrancy, something that I thought a wight would do, rather than try (and fail miserably) to dress them in white rags.

    Section 1.8.3 Calling Tom Bombadil

Frodo heard a scraping sound behind his head.

Frodo hewed at the crawling arm.

The hand broke off, and the sword shattered.

There was a shriek, and then it went dark again.

In the dark, Frodo fell on top of Merry. Merry's face felt cold.

Frodo sang the song to call Tom Bombadil.

    There was Tom Bombadil.

Together they carried out Merry, Pippin and Sam.

Tom commanded the hobbits to wake.

They looked at Frodo, then at Tom, and then at themselves.

Tom came back later with their missing ponies and his own Fatty Lumpkin.

The hobbits pulled fresh clothes out of their packs.

Section 1.8.4 The Road to Bree

Tom chose a dagger for each of the hobbits.

'Sharp blades are good to have,' said Tom.

The swords were forged by the men of Westernesse. But they were overcome by the evil king of Carn Dûm. Few remembered them.

But there were still sons of forgotten kings, walking in loneliness, guarding from evil things.

The hobbits had a vision of the men of Westernesse with bright swords, and one with a star on his brow.

Tom led them out of the Barrows. He said these walls were once the boundary of a kingdom.

They galloped their ponies over the last furlong.

Remembering the danger of the Black Riders, they looked anxiously back down the road.

Tom advised them to go to The Prancing Pony in Bree.

    Before them rose Bree-hill.

Some Illustrations from Chapter 9: At the Sign of The Prancing Pony
    Section 1.9.1 Bree

Bree was the chief village of the Bree-land.

According to their own tales, the Bree-folk were the original inhabitants, descendants of the First Men.

Mysterious people wandered the wilds beyond Bree. The Bree-folk called them Rangers.

The hobbits of Bree-land claimed to be the oldest settlement of hobbits in the world. The Shire hobbits considered them Outsiders.

Probably other Outsiders, no better than tramps, ready to dig a hole in any bank.

In the Bree-land, the hobbits were decent and prosperous.

News could be heard at the inn of Bree.

It was dark when the hobbits reached the West Gate of Bree.

The gatekeeper opened the gate. "What business brings you to Bree?"

Frodo was glad to hear the gate clang behind them.

A dark figure climbed in quickly over the gate.

This is a tune that I came up with for the Merry Old Inn song in Chapter 9. The NPCs clap and dance in sync with the song. The fiddle is played by one of my characters. It's my "Peter Jackson cameo" moment. I felt I earned that for composing the fiddle tune.

There is an inn, a merry old inn
    beneath an old grey hill,
And there they brew a beer so brown
That the Man in the Moon himself came down
one night to drink his fill.

Dude, this is AMAZING. I love this! What a fun idea! I wrote a little story about our kinship, and now I'm thinking I ought to illustrate it like you've done. This is just brilliant. Great job!
