    Dune 2021

I'm a huge Dune fan, have read all the books from the original Frank Herbert series to the sequel and prequel ones written by his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Ranks right up there with LoTR as far as sci-fi goes.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Don't know if it was intentional, but I thought I noticed a nod to Brando in Apocalypse Now during one of the early scenes where Baron Harkonnen runs his hand over his bald head. The hints towards Paul's prescient ability were done nicely, showing he sees possible futures as well as probable or fixed ones(fixed futures being a big factor in the books as the Atreides go).

One big error is the apparent use of lasers during the big attack and afterwards. In the books if a laser hits a shield, shield go BOOM! like a H-bomb. Unless those high energy destructive beams of light weren't "lasers."

    Anyone else watch?

Seen it three times now. The last part is a bit of an anticlimax compared to the rest of the movie but not unexpected. I am pleasently surprised by the movie, keeping it quite true to the original story and opening up for more intrigues by the Bene Geseret and other possibilities. I am positive Jason Momoa was alive after his death, there is a secene with him and three-four fremmen "watching over" Paul and Jessica, but find little or no evidence to that effect on the web, most seem to think he "died" in the eco station, I hope not.

As a contrast we also got Asimov's Foundation, but as serie, and it is an utter dissapointment.

I saw it last night on HBO. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a drama that concentrates on story and dialogue. Too many people are expecting popcorn material. In kin chat there was "where's the action? Too much information and talking! BORING!" *sigh*

Without giving any spoilers away, my take on that was Paul's prescient ability was showing him a possible future. As with seeing Chani stabbing him or Jamis being a friend and teacher as opposed to what actually happened.

Part One, if following the book faithfully as this movie does, wouldn't have much action until nearing the turning point. Part Two will likely be full of more "kung-fu in the desert" that Lynch wanted to avoid in his version.

I really enjoyed it though, was my cup of tea.

I have not seen it yet but i plan to very soon, never read the book though, but the film looks good from the trailers I've seen, and i read about it going to be 2 parts with the director saying the story is too complex and would not do it unless 2 parts.

I've read where the second is already gotten the green light, and Villeneuve is planning on three, for now(fingers crossed). And there's the TV series, The Sisterhood, revolving around the Bene Geseret, coming out next year.

    Read the book.
    You will not be disappointed.

The movie covers most of the first book.
I hope the second movie will cover the end of the first book and incorporate some of all of the second book.
There is enough material in Frank's books to keep this movie-series going as long as Lotro has been going. (We will not miss the son's misguided stuff).

Maybe we will end up with a streaming thing like we have with Game of Thrones, Star Wars, LOTR...etc.

If I had my druthers, a multi season series along the lines of GoT would be THE way to adapt the Dune universe to screens.

You're a bit late with that, they did that twenty years ago.

Going back to the movie there was one thing I missed from the David Lynch version, Brad Dourif being all weird and twitchy as Piter de Vries

There was a 1990 mini series of that, was actually not bad, did a good job of following the book IMHO.

Seems I'm one of the few that thought the Dune and Children of Dune miniseries were atrocious.

Immediately up there with my top fantasy/sci-fi films. it meant so much to me to see a high-brow, slow building artistic film like this in an age of action.

I really liked it, thought it was well done.
