What happens to my chars when the server closes down?

Hi there,

I think about starting a char on Shadowfax, but as this server is already at max-level 115 it probably won't be around much longer than a year or so, maybe even less. Since I don't want to invest time and probably some Mithril on a char that is gone for good in a couple of months, I'm wondering what will happen after the server shuts down. Will there be a transfer, and if so, can we choose the destination server? How was this handled with previous legendary servers?

A year or so proved to be overly optimistic. We can now see that 140 is scheduled for May 3 with the end of the server likely to be announced around the same time.
