    Middle-earth Feedback: Ungol

In the ancient speech of the Elves, the words for darkness, shadows, and gloom are synonymous with the fearsome, eight-legged monster known as the Ungol.

Read more about the Ungol in the Lorebook and post your comments here.

I'm not sure that I follow the article. Is this a new breed of spider, or are we just calling them 'ungols' now?

I'm with this person. I've never seen the word "ungol" in the game before.

The plural of "ungol" is not "ungols". I'm still perfecting my Sindarin plurals, but using Ardalambion as a guide, I believe the plural for ungol is yngyl. (Short u, whether final syllable or non-final, changes into a 'y', while o in a final syllable also changes into a y).

Good pick of beast since most people hate spiders. It is just plan fun to kill them.

"Spider" is the English translation of the Elvish word "Ungol".

Ah but the 'o' is not in the final syllable. I believe the plural is 'engyl'.

Err, yes it is. Un-gol. 'o' is in the final syllable. U is in the first syllable

I believe Yngyl is right, but my Sindarin is a bit rusty.

I love spiders. Except when they drop in front of you with no warning. Still, spiders are evil in M-e so I suppose I have to kill them...

"In The Lord of the Rings™: Shadow of Angmar™ the Ungols lie in wait in Middle-earth’s darkest places."

Err...unless the spiders in Chetwood, the Marshes, the fields around Ost Gurath and elsewhere are a different breed not descended from Ungoliant, isn't this statement false?

Not trying to pick nits or anything, just curious if "Ungols" (or whatever the correct plural form is) refer only to spiders that dwell underground?

Methinks they should have set Berephon upon this lorebook entry before publishing it!

But since it is in the lorebook, it can be edited... (HINT!)

The ones the drop from trees and such in-game creep me out. They die whether I have to kill them or not. The walking-around ones I can leave alone, but if one tries to drop on me or behind me, like in Lob's Grove, dead it will be.

    Yurg.

    The willies, give they me.

And you probably won't see it until we get to Cirith Ungol - the backdoor to Mordor, and even worse, the dwelling place of one of the most vile and evil creatures of Middle Earth - Torech Ungol, Shelob's Lair.

The Ungol is not a new breed of spider, the statement is not false, nor is it referring only to underground spiders...

In Middle Earth, Shelob is the last child of Ungoliant. All of the spiders of ME - "from the Ephel Duath to the eastern hills, to Dol Guldur and the fastnesses of Mirkwood." - are her "lesser broods, ######## of the miserable mates, her own offspring, that she slew". (quoted from The Two Towers)

Technically, the term Ungol encompasses all of these offspring, but I would venture a guess that in game terms, the Ungol is Shelob and her direct desendents (her immediate offspring) who will be the queens and larger 'spiders' (the elites - or possibly higher - and up) that we will encounter in our travels and adventures, and these will probably be found in the 'darkest places'.

soo...shelob is an ungol? and what about bogberth? could she also be shelob's sister of some sorts?

the only "ungol" i guess are in angmar and MAYBE the great barrows. but chetwood ect. are just native creatures.
