    A Revel Too Far

Is anyone else having trouble figuring out which elves to admonish?

    EDIT: ooooooooooooooooooooh!

THIS IS NOT a blast through it quest. It takes time to do. LISTEN to the what the revelers are saying. (and NO not the emote /listen).

Watch the dancing elves. They will go out of step when they're a little tipsy. I didn't notice any strange talk from the elves when I was working on it....even though I think you're supposed to.

On the other hand, they really need to turn up the speed on the elves changing from sober to drunk. I'm all for slowing down and enjoying the scenery, but waiting 10 minutes just to have someone steal the drunken one because they ran up right as you noticed? Not fun.

There is something that makes it obvious. Check the Spelling of the words. Some of them are misspelled. Instead of Steak one will say snake.... Just be patient and let them speak, you might have to stay there for awhile.

There should always be exactly the same number of drunk elves in the field at any given time. They are replaced immediately when they are discovered and sobered up - it's mainly a matter of being close enough to hear one when they randomly decide to spew a line of drunken gibberish.

It's also worth noting that a drunk elf may spew either drunk OR sober lines, but sober ones never spew drunk lines.

I may change that in the future so you can play a better 'elimination' game, but that's more of a logic game which wasn't quite what I had in mind when I originally wrote the quest. Gotta think about that a bit.

I simply deleted the quest. No fun there whatsoever.

A problem is that if your watching a group of 5 and one speaks, one may immediately overwrite the one next to him turning it off instantly.

I have to say, good job with this one. I had been running around mindlessly grinding quests, and when I got this one and saw the red line for admonishing sober ones, I had to stop and think. I say that quests always fall into one of three subtypes, but this one doesn't neatly fit into those bounds. Now that I figured it out, it won't take me long to do it again in the future, but it was different (and therefore, good!).

I don't know how many times I failed this quest but I can't wait to do it again. Very well done. A nice change from the normal gather this and bring it back.

I enjoyed that quest, unfortunately it turned to dawn just as I picked it up... so I have to wait for night again =/

I also skipped it. I couldn't figure it out. They only said three things over and over again. I was trying for 15 minutes. I'm not spending 30 minutes on one quest just for 700 rep points.

I can't understand the decision to do this. Do you want to reward guessers?

That does explain why somebody identified a drunken one who was speaking normally. That irked me.

I like the concept, but it is a test of patience when it doesn't need to be. I did this on Bullroarer so I knew what to look for: "snake", "soap", "stir" etc. It still took over 30 minutes of just standing with the group of 5, watching them repeat themselves. Worse than grinding.

Also, there were some phrases that did not seem to have drunken/slurred versions. Is that intentional?

This quest's design was really poor. I spend an hour running from elf to elf ... and they're simply not saying anything out of the ordinary. Waste of time.

    Re: A Revel Too Far

Spent an hour on this one knowing what to look for and only got 3/5 by the time dawn came around. Are you sure that there are a constant number of drunk elves? I positioned myself to be in hearing range of 6 elves, 3 on the gazebo and 3 in the field, and not one went drunk for the final 30 minutes of night. Which brings up the second question, when the quest description says "evening hours", does that mean the entire night (as the revelers are there) or just when it is literally evening (as opposed to midnight/late watches/fore-dawn)?

    Re: A Revel Too Far

Followup: I have to say that this quest is easy when no one is around - and mind-numbingly difficult when the area is packed like it was tonight. I spent probably 30 minutes and managed to get 2 drunk elves.

I definitely think it would help to change it so that drunk elves always say drunk lines, rather than giving them the possibility of sounding sober. Too many people were just clicking randomly, which resulted in them having to start the quest over, but also in taking away clicks that I could have had knowing what to look for.

    Re: A Revel Too Far

My only gripe is this: You have to wait FAR too long for the NPCs to say anything, and there doesn't seem to be a way to force them to talk to you.

I would change the quest so that:

Clicking on an NPC gets them to say a line of dialogue, instead of auto-scolding them
You must use the /scold emote to admonish a drunk if they make a mistake

I want to be able to talk to these elves to find out if they are inebriated, not stand around spying on them until they slip up. I tried using /say , emotes, anything I could think of to get the one I was targeting to say something. I realize the ways of Elves are sublte, but it doesn't take that long to catch on when someone is wasted. There is a cooldown on the quest and it seems to be a night-only event... WHY SHOULD IT TAKE SO $*%& LONG FOR THEM TO SAY ANYTHING USEFUL.

Make the NPCs interact with players better. I like the idea of putting in mini-games as a time sink, but something SHORT and FUN is better gamewise than something LONG and BORING where you are just waiting for some event you can't influence.
Not all those who wander are lost. They might be working on one of their exploration deeds.
The new forums stink on ice. Let others follow them who can.

    Re: A Revel Too Far

    I agree on 2 things:
    1) The elves should be able to be forced to say their lines because waiting for them to speak was so boring.
    2) Drunk ones should not say sober lines.

I watched 30 lines of dialogue go by before I found my last drunk elf. After I was done I scrolled up and sure enough, the lines were all spelled correctly and everything.

Ok, that's all pretty useful feedback actually. I'll probably be making some tweaks to this for patch 2 if I can get to it in time. I haven't decided exactly WHAT tweaks yet, but probably some tweaks.

My biggest concern is that the distance you can see their text at is too short right now. Somebody is talking every ~2-3 seconds, so clearly there is an issue of simply being out of range of most of them when they talk. If I can resolve that it'll definitely help a lot.

Then I have to decide if I also need to mess with the ratio of drunk/sober elves and the lines they say. Hmm...

It would probably be a lot of work (if possible at all) but it would be cool if more elves got drunk as the night went on. This would help with finding the last few drunks before the sun came up

I don't mind the drunken ones speaking soberly or not I just wish they would speak more often and cut a little of the stand around time down.

I like logic type puzzles so the "iz they or iz they not" twist is fun.

Also, I don't know if is this is a problem with the game or with my computer but I often crash in this area and leaving the area when I first see the sparkles that tell me I am going to go link dead does not help.

Nice work on the quest though, different enough to make the jaded lvl 60s stop and think.
