Exclamation Forum server time is running about 3 minutes ahead

The time on the forums server appears to be running almost 3 minutes ahead of authoritative time sources available on the internet.

While this may seem trivial, it may be the cause of posts within a thread appearing out of order.

If left uncorrected, this time difference might also eventually cause authentication issues.

I thought I was seeing things, and just figured it was me.

Yeah, seems maybe one of their servers in the farm isnt updating the time right. Might explain some things I've seen...

Yup, it's a problem on Turbine's side for the forums. It has been like this ever since the new layout with the merging of mylotro.

This is why we see ninja posts.

This is why when we edit our posts only seconds afterward we still get flagged as edited at some time 3 minutes or so in the future.

It's sporadic, sometimes on-time and sometimes 3 minutes in the future.

Really annoying. I've bugged it, but no changes for a month.

See, I edited this post to show it. Down below shows edited in the future of when I edited this about 30 seconds after it was posted.

Re: Forum server time is running about 3 minutes ahead

Servers in a farm whose clocks get this far out of sync are either a symptom of a serious and neglectful server software misconfiguration, a symptom of server hardware that is dangerously unreliable, or a combination of both.

I had also reported this using the "Report a Community Site Bug" page, but I'm glad I wasn't just imagining things.

I hope this issue will receive appropriate attention and correction before it starts causing more disruptive (or even destructive) side-effects.

This has been reported on before in the Help and Support area. I agree with the OP tho, if it goes unaddressed it may cause massive issues.

It happens whenever Sapience is online. He's the Harbinger of Soon™, remember. Plays hell with the space-time continuum thingy.

We definitely need terminology for things that will happen 3 minutes from now! Perhaps ForumSOON™ is the answer!

Ok I needed a laugh and that did it!

I'll pass this info along. It certainly looks like one of the servers has traveled into the future. I can only hope it reports back the winning lottery numbers.

Hahahaha. And Sapience is here, nice! When Sapience or Patience comes around things usually get forwarded along and completed in a reasonable timeframe. Thanks!

That's nothing. Haven't checked in a while, so don't know if they still do. But the game servers used to be ~5 minutes fast. Really played havoc when trying to finish some daily count-limited thing before the late night reset occurred. You made it in time but it didn't count because the server reset too soon (there's that word again! ).

I'm not sure if the time difference was ever addressed. But if it was, it's back. It's still playing havoc with out-of-order replies. I also seem to be randomly logged out of the forums 3 or 4 times a day now, even though my cookie should still be valid. Sometimes just refreshing the page magically remembers that I'm logged in. I also realized that I can't do forum searches easily:

Yup, it comes and goes. Sometimes it jumps ahead 3 minutes, and sometimes it's accurate. This had made people's edits be marked as edited even though it might have been just seconds afterward. And this causes ninja post all over the place. Still annoying as all heck.

Right now, it's running 6 minutes behind.

Seems it can't make up it's mind.

LOL. Submitted this post, and the time caught up.

The time changes randomly and mysteriously when server farm power usage reaches 1.21 Gigawatts.

Would it be possible for someone to follow up with whomever you passed this along to 3 weeks ago?

This issue still persists, and seems to be responsible for my forum authentication cookie being rejected as invalid because it comes from the future.

The time is now nearly 5 minutes out of sync.
