Some images won't thumbnail/scale

Consider these two pages. They both use the same template, and each template includes an image of the same size. Both source images are also the same resolution.

This one works:

This one results in a blank thumbnail, but the image is there if you go to the source file page:

Unfortunately, looking over the landmark pages I'd made back in the day, more of these images seem to fail than succeed. Reuploading the old image made no difference.

It didn't work for me at first but I have displayed the blank picture, cleared my cache (F5) and now it's all ok. You may want to do the same

Interesting. I'd done that repeatedly last night, clearing cache, forcing refresh, etc. No dice.

So I went to double-check today, and the Big Staddlemere page loaded first shot, without having to refresh.

Ok, so maybe it's fixed? I knew I had a bunch of images using that size, so looked up the pages that transclude Infobox_landmark.

For me, the first several still suffer the problem:
Mirkstone Tunnels
Rivergate Watch
Tham Gelair
Thrushstones
Frerin's Court

The only difference between these and Big Staddlemere and Limael's Vinyard are that I reuploaded those two last night, but haven't touched these. This suggests that there is something different about the way these older files are stored/used.

Okay, that's weird, more so that I can create a thumbnail of any size save for 200px.
I guess the engine failed to create a proper thumbnail and saved it anyway, I've found a handy feature called purge that should force the engine to recreate the thumbnails from scratch though it does not seem to work. Still if reuploading those images worked it may be easier to do just that.

OK, there are a few things going on here. Not sure why the 200px thumbnails for these and possibly others were created as blanks initially. The purge feature (mentioned by Reniannen) clears out the thumbnails, and I've seen the 200px versions get recreated correctly once an article requests them. I've done just that for the ones you listed above.

The second issue is the thumbnails being cached by our CDN. When they are recreated, it will take some time for our CDN to expire the old versions and cache the latest versions. I've manually invalidated the ones listed above, so those articles are all set now. Going forward, we are looking into having the file upload/thumbnail system sending invalidate requests when things are uploaded. No ETA on that currently.

Ah! I forgot about action=purge. My, but it has been a while. Ok, I'll do that if I ever see it again. I'd rather do that than chew up server resources by re-uploading identical screenshots. Thanks, guys.
