    Custom Avatars

Are you going to add the option to have custom avatars in the near future?

As far as I remember having read, they won't allow it for security issues... and... something else I don't remember.

No. Though we may allow you to link to an offsite avatar in the distant future. No uploads to the servers of any kind are permitted (avatars, signatures, files) for security reasons.

Will more avatars be added for us to choose from?

Yes, but probably not for a little while. We want to get the known issues and any new ones taken care of before we start adding in more fluff.

There are already 319 avatars available - certainly not enough for everyone to have a unique one, but the choices are plenty. Just paging through them I feel torn between a number of them. Maybe I'll do a regular rotation to keep my forum appearance fresh and clean.

Posting now to see how this one looks...

Edit: Testing the edit function as well. And also I find it amusing how much I associate people with their forum avatars. I just looked at a post by Yula the Bunny with no bunny next to the post, and had to do a double take. Still, I have no doubt I'll get used to the new look.

I miss my avatar of my favorite song writer with his guitars...Oh well the bagpipes will do for now...

Aside from that the forums are loading much faster for me. Can't complain about that or complain about no longer getting booted off while posting.

I had trouble choosing from the available avatars too. There were several I liked. I settled on the Collector's Edition one because it made me feel kinda special. My question is this: are there going to be "limited edition" avatars available to people in the future (kinda like the forum titles for Beta testers and whatnot)? I would love to get like a limited edition avatar for Helm's Deep pre-order (once that's available). It would make me feel special.

Okay, so if there's over 300 avatars to choose from why the heck do I only have 10???
    Hello, New Forums.

Why isn't there a special part of the forums that just has to do with festivals or the candy jars at Turbine? I mean, that's all that's important right?

There are multiple categories to choose from a drop down list. Many of the categories also have multiple pages. But it only shows a small set on screen at a time.

Over 300 avatars, even one for each crafting profession - except armsman. I double checked each category, and I still might have missed it - so if it is there, would you be so kind and point me to the category / page where it is?

This. For some reason I remember people better by their forum avatar, and after I see that, THEN I remember the name as well. So it might take some time before I remember certain people again Not to mention how I find my own posts when I browse fast some thread I have posted because I have used to my own avatar and now I had to change...

I used to do this in the beta forums and shortly after launch with the live forums. Even with the canned avatars most people had a unique one and you could tell who the poster was just by the avatar. Couldn't always remember the forum name, but I could always remember the avatar they used.

Laughs. I have the Bunny Avatar on a web server. I may get around to putting it into my signature in a couple more weeks.

Without the old custom avatars, it's like everyone's identity changed on the new forums. I don't recognize people peripherally anymore.

It's getting really confusing to have a bunch of people with the same avatar or no avatar at all when trying to figure out who's who (did I already answer that person? is it the same person who sent me a pm? didn't we already discuss this in another thread or was it someone else?).

But I've noticed that most people whose posts I like (and whom I enjoy discussing with) have the "captain" avatar though. That's weird.

In that regard, custom signatures are a blessing to recognize at least some people at a glance.

I think we went close to 3 years without custom avatars, so it doesn't seem all that confusing to me - I've always had to look at people's names to tell them apart, and some people do use these forums without showing avatars at all.

In any case, I don't really understand the reason given why we cannot have these. Security? How is an image dropbox a potential security hole? It's not that difficult to set up the directory permissions for a website appropriately, and if necessary they could host these custom images on a different server.

The one reason I could understand is if they don't want to police them... some percentage of posters are always going to be immature or obnoxious, have poor judgement, etc. However, since they've already signed up for policing signature images, that reason doesn't hold up either.

    Khafar
