The [WEBSITE] REALLY needs an update

The LotRO Website has been, in most forms, not updated since Riders of Rohan. This shows in the "Explore Middle-Earth" section where neither the new regions or the new class have been advertised or even mentioned. Also in "Game Features" there's no mention of Epic Battles or Mounted Combat. So, to sum it up, please just update the site.

p.s. there's still a link to the lotteries

it would also be cool if there was a terrain map even if it's just of the towns. not getting my hopes up. just saying.

I agree. Also updating the design up the website would be pretty neat.

But heck, what are we kidding our selves. Turbine won't do it. This whole section is just for the community to give suggestions, that will never get implemented...

Sometimes I get a brief notification of a PM on login. It goes away too easily and can easily be missed.

The way the forum is configured you get a new private message notification when you get a new private message. It only lasts 5 seconds or so. You are not logged in or not paying attention it is easy to miss.

It works a lot like the Skype notification when a buddy connects to Skype.

Unfortunately, I often go weeks before to checking my private messages because I get very few messages.

I actually never used the lorebook map since http://dynmap.ruslotro.com/ was easier for me to get to.

Well they're the same it looks like, except lore book was like a google earth thing, it showed all the zones in a realistic manner

The lorebook was exactly like the TerrainMap plugin (they use the same exact artwork) with the exception that the lorebook allowed full annotations since it could load/unload them dynamically as needed (plugins can't dynamically access data without reloading which makes full annotation impractical so TerrainMap only supports temporary annotations from the Search feature). The lorebook map was hosted by Google as a google map - I offered to create and maintain a google version but Turbine declined. http://dynmap.ruslotro.com/ is more like the MoorMap plugin which displays the parchment maps and full annotation (MoorMap can provide full annotation since the data is limited to just the map being displayed)

I REALLY would like that, trust me. I joined after the lorebook itself was gone, so I don't know about that. But even the Riders of Rohan layout hasn't been updated.

While everyone is at it (thank's for the point-out about Frelorn) it would be cool if there was like a small symbol if a dev has replied to a thread. Then if you read one of 100 Revamp Moors posts you would know which one to look at.

The Lorebook is never coming back. There is literally almost none of it that is compatible with the game as it exists today. As far as a revamp of the actual site, that is not in the plans for the immediate future, but you never know what might come along down the road. There are certainly some aspects of the site that need updating and cleaning up. Going through every page of the site takes time and logging, then new information has to be produced and vetted through the proper channels and then updated. It is not a snap of the fingers process, but it is on my big list of things that need to be done.

There are a few bits that should be a priority, for instance the site still has the level cap at 85.

    Visit the Wiki - https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

You will find much of what used to be in the Lorebook there -- including many of the Google maps (Terrain maps) for the older areas.
They are not the Google Maps versions, but simply "still" versions.

    Another batch is here: http://www.visionsofthering.com/ohmaps.shtml

And you can read their history at: http://www.arda-online.com/news.php -- but that site was retired in 2010.

Oh yes, believe me, I know them. I even like to edit the wiki from time to time (if anyone has spare time, stuff like mirkwood, rohan and gondor is still reasonably incomplete). Also, thebrasse.com is really cool, though they only have a handful of low level maps. Just like the idea of the lorebook map coming back. All that map tracker data in the upper right corner must come from somewhere...

My two biggest griefs relate to reading on a phone:
    • SSL cert invalid - the hostname in the cert does not match the actual hostname. I need tell Android Chrome each time that, yes, it is ok to go to the forums web site
    • Page does not adjust to viewing size - there is a "phone theme" but it has different content than the default theme. It could cover the 80/20 sweetspot simply to flow text rather than use a fixed-size span

The first item should be straight-forward for an sysadmin-y type, I've done this several times at various companies.

The second item is in principle straightforward for a decent web page designer. I can understand if there issues making it more work.

    Cheers,
    Gloimli @ Windfola

I don't know why its so hard for someone at turbine to not take 1 hour of their day and just disable/remove obsolete information / menu items on the website.

this website runs on a CMS, its really not that hard.

What would Turbine replace it with?

I believe the reason Turbine has left this stuff alone is that they do not have staff available to review the pages, find out of date information, create replacement content, update the web site and verify they didn't screw something up.

Turbine may have a page with the level cap as 85 using Riders of Rohan pics. If someone at Turbine knew where that page is, they could edit 85 to 100. That would be quick. The proper update is gets some Gondor pics and completely rewrite the page. There is the issue of nobody with the ability to make the changes knows where this page is.

    My personal opinion.

Turbine has reduced the staff on Lotro to point where there entire areas have no one assigned to work on them any more. You end up with the issue I was looking at recently. You go to the character page. There are four races and 9 classes. Lotro has people to put the Man Bears in the game software. Nobody available to add:
    https://www.lotro.com/en/explore/characters
    Boernings to the character section.

would it help if somebody just posted the html code necessary to display the information, using the already existing code on the page, right here in the forums?
