Question Free-to-Play to VIP : Is it worth it?

    Hello Lotro community,

Ive been playing LOTRO for almost 5 years, and its a great game - I firmly believe that such. I would also like to add that I do think that VIP is worth upgrading to those in a better position than myself, whether that be financially or the time they can play the game.

My experience, however, has not been that of a regular player you would expect would be if someone has played a gsme for five years. And in saying that, I must disclaim: I have not put any money into LOTRO at all. Whether that be TP or expansions, no money has been spent on this game. The game Ive been playing ever since level 35 of my character has been cramming in quests from every region from every corner and grinding for hours. I must also confirm that level 40 is (at least in my experience) is the maxium level someone can get with this type of play. The only experience I've had with later game content is with playing on the beta servers and going through every nook and cranny to find everything and see the coolest sights.

The problem im facing now is that im not sure whether Lotro is worth paying for in my situation, especially with having to crunch money irl, I dont think ill be able to add anyother thing I have to pay for. So besides the regular answer of "its your choice", what kind of benefits do I get if I decide to become a VIP, as I might consider it sometime in the future.

    Thanks in advance,

Maybe you could try it out for a month first and then become ViP again in the future if you can afford and felt it was worth it? All quests you have taken and deeds you have started can still be finished after the ViP runs out, and you will also have Swift Travel unlocked and trait slots on the characters you have logged in during your ViP time
I think your gold cap is removed as well, but I don't remember.

There might be a list of what you get and what stays after ViP on the LOTRO wiki somewhere

A year ago, I would have said yes. But now, I'll say no.

LoTRO's VIP system isn't rewarding enough. Everything you can get as a VIP for $15 a month you can buy in the store. Doesn't seem like much, but that $15 a month adds up. Not to mention buying Xpacks. I'm willing to bet that in the last 5 years, I've put nearly $3000 dollars into the game, and it hasn't shown. I now face lag, crashes, and memory leaks that I've never faced before. The content has become repetitive, and while I love the Bingo Boffin quest, it seems like a money grab. The things that they said they'd do with my money, they didn't fulfill. There will be no move to Amsterdam, no housing update, and if anything good is added, it'll probably cost me more money.

The benefits aren't worth it either. Seeing as 99% of them can be bought for TP, VIP really holds nothing "useful" except for the remote mailbox. Heck, some Non-VIP players I know have more "benefits" than i do.

Sorry to be a debbie-downer, but you did ask :P.

I would recommend at least a one-off month of VIP, both to throw a few coins Turbine's way, and to nab a few unlocks (Swift travel being the main of these). Beyond that... I don't see too much of a return for certain types of players.

The question of going VIP aside, you can get things in the store using TP that you've earned from doing deeds.

As you said, it takes a loooong time to grind out TP to unlock more content, but you can definitely get above level 40 if you do that - especially if you do it on more than one character.

Better for you than VIP would be to watch the LOTRO Market and hope for a deep discount sale of the Quad Pack, especially around this year's anniversary event in April. They've sold it for $10 several times in the past. That's less than a month VIP and gives you content covering levels 45ish through 90ish (officially 50-85, but you can start earlier and push later).

I became a premium member almost right away.......so much for f2p and I would suggest it, as it does open something up

When I am in a position to play some of the VIP only levels I may take the plunge. But until then I'll break the piggy bank every once in a while

I went VIP after stumbling on the first locked content and since then I have access to everything and a while later also got all the questpacks. Frankly I think I did it because I got so immersed in the game I hated the thought of not having full access everywhere.

Lotro and VIP are, to me, keepers.

Imo, VIP is worth it at least once for the unlocks. Make sure to log in every character before your subscription ends. If you are dedicated to the f2p style, then I would point out that Ered Luin on an Elf Mini is a good TP farm. If you grabbed the free starter pack that was about last year, then every character you make gets a slayer/deed accelerator tome and and xp accelerator tome, which make TP farming go even faster. You would be about level 16 by the time you finish Ered Luin deeds, and another 4 levels would put you in reach to eat your way to kindred in Shire and Bree rep items stocked up on your mains. Then you just delete your farmer and repeat the process.
