    Tolkien exhibit in New York

If you live in NYC, or close enough to get to it, there's a Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan Library.

    https://www.vulture.com/2019/01/tolk...441.1539257838

The linked article shows an image (alas, way too small to read) of Tolkien's own map, that he pieced together out of sheets of paper and referred to while writing LotR. It's apparently more detailed than Christopher's (admittedly beautiful) map that appeared in the hardcover books.

If any of you can get to the exhibit, I'd love to see a review.

I plan on going to this exhibit since I live a few miles away.

There are also some fun events happening here while the exhibit is open.

Yes! I ordered the exhibition book from The Morgan Library online store: https://www.themorgan.org/shop/books...r-middle-earth

The book is really great, and even if you can't go to the exhibition in person, it is still neat to see the documents and artwork from Tolkien -- amazing stuff!

Yup, I plan on going. I couldn't make it to the exhibit when it premiered in the UK, so I'm really excited that its coming to NY.

Suffering Knights of Snowbourn took 20 or so kinnies to the Oxford one at last summers Kin Meet. I would recommend you go if at all possible, the exhibition is quite brilliant, the insight into the whole creative process of Middle Earth has to be seen to be beleived.

You just can't visit the Eagle and Child (Bird and Baby) for a pint afterwards in NYC unless they shipped that across too:-)

Well ... in a large, diverse, and active place like NYC, I'd bet a case of cookies that there are several pubs that would fill the bill. (I have no idea which they are, I've been in New York for a total of five hours forty years ago, and I don't drink.* ) Perhaps someone who lives in the city could do some research and post it?

I plan on seeing the exhibit in March.

I have some NYC pubs/beer garden recommendations for anyone who is interested.

Could you possibly say in a bit more detail what the book is about exactly? I don't know if I'll be going to the exhibit, but I'll definitely be getting the book if its something that interests me. Is it about Tolkien's formulation of Middle-earth, or more to do with analyses of his various writings, letters, and artwork? Speaking of his artwork, is there a lot of it featured in the book?

This is coming from someone who (obviously) is a pretty big Tolkien fan, having read the entirety of The History of Middle-earth. I just want to make sure it is something new, and not just an attempt at rehashing previously published works by giving it a slight alteration before I shell over $65 for it.

The book is from 2018, here is a link to it on amazon with images/description so you can get an idea what's in it.
Even though it's cheaper by far from amazon I will be buying it in person. Figure the extra $ will help support the Morgan.

    https://www.amazon.com/Tolkien-Maker...f+Middle-earth

    from the description:
"This landmark publication, produced on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford in 2018 and at the Morgan Library in New York in 2019, is set to become a standard work in the literature on J. R. R. Tolkien. "

Thanks, I didn't even think to search for it elsewhere. I'll definitely be pulling the trigger and getting this one, from the Morgan too to show support for their work.

I asked for a shipping cost quote (to Canada) from the Morgan. It's the same price, US$55, for 1 or 2 copies.
Amazon.ca sells the hardcover version for Can$50, no shipping.
I would love to buy from the Morgan. The price difference is too steep though
Can$105 for 2 copies through Amazon, versus Can$240 from the Museum.

For those of you who are interested in Tolkien's first map of Middle-Earth: the Amazon.com link gives access to 10 images, one of which is of the two pages of the book that show that map and a detail of that map.
This image can be enlarged. Esp. the detail can be read easily then. Enjoy!

Yeah... I realized that shortly after my last post. To get it shipped from NYC to upstate NY is about $20. Then with tax and everything, it ends up totaling ~$90 for the book... Just a little bit outside of my budget at the moment. I'll have to settle for the Amazon link, where it is $29 USD with free shipping unfortunately.

I went to the one recently held in Oxford's Bodleian Library, it was a fantastic exhibit, 4 hour round trip on my day off work, but would do it again in a heartbeat, spent a fortune on various things on the way out, mostly his art and the main book from the exhibit.

I would 100% recommend going to anyone even slightly interested in the man and his work.

The book is about him, his life and his works, it has some of his letters in there, art, notes, maps etc. It looks into how he shaped his vision of middle earth and you can see how the stories and ideas evolved but it also goes into his personal life as well.

As for art, there is a lot of it in the book, original work including his original book covers etc, think a loose-ish biography, mixed with the histories of middle earth series, mixed with a collection of art.

It is a large book and in itself looks beautiful, I would recommend it and I dont think any Tolkien fan would be disappointed.

The image appears in my copy of THE ART OF LORD OF THE RINGS (link above) but is also too small there....

This one is $29 for the hardcover and free shipping whereas the other link had $65 for hardcover and $40 for paperback. This is why Amazon is the best

It's already been mentioned that the book is cheaper from Amazon. At least one poster has said "I'm going to order it from the museum anyway, to support it."

I would do the same if I had the money.

(And if I had two million dollars, I'd give SSG one.)

While attending Oxonmoot, as part of a 10-day trip in Southwest England all about visiting sites related to Tolkien (and Austen and Shakespeare, but mostly Tolkien), I got to see this exhibit at the Bodleian in Oxford, and I can say that even though I only got about 40 minutes there, it was by far the highlight of the entire trip. It is breathtaking and emotional to be seeing the actual maps, and letters, and sketches, and desk, and pipe, and drawings, and so much more. But the book is also a necessary thing since you won't get to study the artifacts nearly as long as you might want to. (I bought it on Amazon because I didn't have the spare weight capacity in the luggage to bring it home if I'd bought it from the Bodleian's gift shop.) I kind of wish I could justify taking another trip to NYC just to see it again, that's how great it was.

    Thank you for sharing

The book just arrived in my mailbox this morning and even though these are images of the original, I feel a bit emotional about it too. Very touching. (And I am not a sappy person, I am factual and sarcastic).

The book shows quite a few of the original maps for different areas and many of the 'little things' that Tolkien did: doodles in the newspaper that became stylized flowers etc., a page of an account book with elvish numerals and words, heraldic designs for different families of elves.

There is a chapter on the development of Elvish.

And then his watercolours etc. of which layouts you see back a lot in this game.

I am so very glad I bought it.

We are around 800km from NY... it's so tempting... yet atm it's soooooo cold.
