Cool Once it's all said and done, please share with us what broke the poor runekeepers

While I can understand not wanting to get into too many details or the nitty-gritty, I'm just super curious what it was that caused such a bug and what the general fix might be. I like technical stuff and explanations of technical stuff and one of my favorite things about some other games is when they explain why something broke. (FF14 is usually very good at this, even if some of the technical details might go over most players' heads)

Assuming they can figure out the root cause (I work in tech support, you'd be surprised at how often the answer to 'what went wrong?' is a shrug and a 'no clue, I just figured out the fix from experience')

Me too. I'm not technical either, but I am curious about how this caused so much trouble. A grade school explanation would be appreciated

Hmmmm, I noticed this happened right after Orion came back. I know you wanted to make an entrance, but geez!

The issue is related to a halo effect of a relatively minor bug fix to Runekeeper to get their satchels to properly display on the avatar.

I dislike the satchels though, so I never really cared if they were showing, so I always got the tiniest looking satchel from Laila's and then used the invisible satchel that you got in Moria.

What I'm curious about is how the satchel got bugged, what did you code that borked it up and then missed it completely? xD

Any news on when the servers will go back up... an approximate arrival time?
What about the anniversary celebration? This lasts from *4/20/22@10am - 5/11/22@3am*, do we get an extension?
And another thing that's on my mind..., I'm in a Lord of the Rings Online group, there's constant talk about compensation...? I don't care about the compensation itself, the main thing is to extend the festival.

Why not revert this minor fix then and let us play while you develop proper fix internally and introduce it in next patch?
It's now practically day and night since Lotro is down...

Cord, are you sure this isn't a reckless dev trying to nerf the Runekeepers? Just kidding. In all serious, thank you to the team working late trying resolve this issue.

We are working this morning to reopen the worlds. Yes, we will extend the Anniversary Festival by at least a day.

Because that wouldn't solve the problem. Remember, people logged in to find their satchels missing from inventory. Reverting the bug fix would not make those items reappear.

If such an obvious solution were possible, they would have done it. They also probably know how long the game has been down.

is it possible to roll back the world to before the update?
Or maybe accept the issue and offer an appropriate compensation for all rks?

Good morning, Cord & the dev team!

Thank you for being so careful with the fix. I am suffering from LotRO withdrawal, but it doesn't appear to be life threatening, so do what you need to do, and by that I mean don't forget to do things like eat and sleep and such.

    No, because of the database.

But usualy, before patch the software it should be made a fresh database backup.

Thanks for extending the event, due to recent ah... events. Time is looking more like a limited resource than ever! One of the joys of getting older no doubt!

I suspect a lot of hand wringing, pacing the floor, and coffee drinking going on in the SSG offices! I feel for you SSG guys, such a wonderful event stained by this. It'll get fixed at some point.

One or two times during the night I was imagining Orion screaming "who the ^$&& hacked my beautiful coding?".

But hey they revert to the "halo" effect trope, no one has to take responsibility. Cord will keep everyone safe from attack.

How bad are the hacks if you delete an item in changing how it's displayed?

Now just a choice to come clean on the last backup date or throw it at the beleaguered CS? Annoy everyone equally and reveal too much or push a few to their breaking point? A budget requiring technical replacement solution based on Stone resources used too much to even consider? Who maybe around to get it up and running in an hour or two?

Thank you for sharing the information about the bug. We had no "need to know" but it was still nice to find out.

For the people asking why they don't just do a rollback and restore the database. Consider all the people who had logged on -- everything they did or collected would be lost, so that's a no-go as well.

Can someone explain to me what a "halo effect" is in this particular context? I'm very well versed with datacenter infrastructure and networking, but not so much with coding......
