Re: Dev Diary Feedback: Shared Storage

I for one do not think it invalidates my housing storage in any way. I'll take all of the storage I can get. To me, it's storage in addition to my housing storage. I do think it would have been a nice feature to have included with the expansion though rather than having it be a part of a separate pack.

Regarding the goat that comes with the expansion pack. It's the same speed as the nimble rep goat, but it's a different color and it's less durable, so you'll get dismounted even more often in Moria.

Shared storage will actually be useful since ....

I'm sensing a major difference between the two systems but hmm... it could just be me.

Just picking knits here, but current housing storage has no timer at all.. it's your desire to get to your house immediately with the map rather than ride there where the "ZOMGtimer" lies.

Same could be said for any vault access since vaults aren't in the most convenient places either.

Aside from that, with the new storage system going live today, I plan on doing my part and freeing up not one but two houses since I will be abandoning them soon since housing seems to be even less useful to me now that shared storage is available at every vault.

Maybe someday if they ever decide to do a total housing makeover I'll bother with them again.

I do kinda agree. House storage is less valuable now, the reasons to own a house are now fewer. But lets face it, games should not limit storage at all; for several reasons actually.

First it is fustrating, and fustrations does not equal fun and people just find away around the problem; like mules, using the mail and aution house to get around storage limitations.

Second, since strorage is valuable people tend to dump items into the enconomy depressing prices in general

Third, crafting takes lots of storage; limited storage tends to discourage crafting.

Storage is limited for server and gameplay performance issues. The more data tied to your character, the longer it takes for the system to deliver it. For example, if your data footprint gets too large, then you'd lag every time you moved from one landblock to another.

It's actually one of the major reasons economies keep going - everyone would be hoarding otherwise. I've played MMOs with unlimited storage (crafting heavy MMOs) and there was virtually no economy because everyone wanted huge stockpiles of everything.

Well, I love it. Very happy to have it. Wanted it in beta testing, vast majority of folks did. Thanks Turbine.

Me too ... I started putting items in my shared storage last night.

Thanks LOTRO staff! Keep up the good work.

Re: Dev Diary Feedback: Shared Storage

The shared storage is wonderful, and my only wish is that it were bigger.

Still, tonight I needed some items crafted for my main by my alt.

I bought the vendor mats with my main in the Shire housing area, put them in the shared bank, and switched characters.

Then I got the mats out and crafted with my alt in Rivendell, placed the crafted items back in the shared bank, and retrieved them with my main in the Shire.

So much simpler than having to send dozens of mails, send more mail back, etc...

Thanks for this feature, it was long overdue.

Ok I know this is old, but I'm a veritable noob to the game. I started out with the 10 day free trial which I then upgraded, but I'm not sure where to purchase other addons for the game, like how do I get access to this shared storage? Any help would be very appreciated.

    Thanks,

The shared storage is part of the Adventurer's Pack which was made available when Siege of Mirkwood came out. Actually, it started out as part of a pre-order bonus pack before the release of the expansion. You can still purchase this from the website (and possibly other locations). There is more information on the main LOTRO website: http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/464-an...he-call-of-war

The shared storage has 20 storage slots you can use to store non-bound items and transfer them between characters if you so choose. It can be accessed from anywhere that you access your standard bank vault, so it's a little more convenient than using a house for shared storage. The extra two character slots are also nice for those who like to try out every single class or those who like to sit in a kinship by themselves. LOL!

Luckily, the game is pretty simple and Turbine doesn't load us down with lots of needless add-ons to suck on our pocket books, but the Adventurer's Pack is certainly a useful one!

If you have further questions about purchasing the Adventurer's Pack after checking the main website, I'd suggest trying to contact Turbine's Customer Support directly. They can be quite helpful.

I had an idea, and I thought it would make sense. Perhaps I am wrong, but here goes.

It would be very useful if "bound" items or even specific / certain bound items could be transferred between characters via share storage. Here's a couple of points supporting this idea:

    1. Items / weapons / armour - Roleplaying perspective: You have a character that wants to pass something down to his child as a family heirloom.

    2. Certain weapons that drop as well as items and armour pieces are Bind on Acquire. That's understandable, but what if I got something I didn't need on my Captain and wanted to transfer it to my Loremaster? I can't. That's very inconvenient.

    3. Certain things could still be make nontransferable such as the Epic story quest rewards, class items, legendary weapons, horses, etc.

The issue with this is that those items would have to be edited to add in level requirements. Take a look, almost every BoA (and many BoE) item has no level requirement to use, as almost all of these are gained from quests which presumes you are of a level equal to the power of the items.

Twinking could seriously create issues with the game if allowed, especially in a manner that your suggestion would allow. And if we follow your third suggestion, then most everything would be currently staying the way it already is.

My main concern is primarily for the raid drops that I need to get for my characters. I need the armour sets, and if I am unable to transfer, lets say, one of the elf stones from DN, then I have to do it again once more on my next character rather than rolling on it then.

If I go with my kin, and we have a group of 12 people, and we all want the full set, thats 60 times I have to go before finished on one character. But lets say someone fits in an extra run, now theyre ahead of everyone else, but now theres one stone up for grabs and I wanted to roll on it like everyone else but we all have the armour piece for it?

You don't raid often do you?

12 static raiders running DN every week takes 12 weeks to get them all geared up (1 run = full set = 1 player done).

2nd, if pieces are going to be 'spare', a lot of people will just switch to an alt for the roll, or /roll and if they win switch before the chest is opened.

Wow, ignore my math there I don't know what I was thinking. But still, 12 weeks to finish 1 set for 1 character is a bit... ridiculous. I would like to have one of each class at some point, but the game is so repetitive it makes it mentally impossible for me to bear.

You need to keep in mind the reason for having items bound in the first place. It may make sense from a roleplaying perspective to hand down items as family heirlooms, but from a game perspective, it would mean those items never leave the game world once a character has gotten them. They just get passed from one character to another to another and the later characters have no need to do whatever it took to get the item in the first place, whether that be a quest, a raid, crafting, or whatever. The market would become saturated with old items, making it pointless for anyone else to get/make new items. We don't want game activities, such as crafting or raiding, to become obsolete just because other people have already gotten all the rewards we need from those activities.

I do think some changes to bound items would be worthwhile, though. Bound housing items should bind to your account rather than a specific character, so that you can have one of your characters switch items in the house back and forth. I haven't come across any dropped weapons or armour that were Bind on Acquire, but if there are some, I think they should be Bind on Equip instead (which is the more common pattern for dropped equipable items anyway), to take care of the problem of items dropping to a character who can't use them.

In theory, I'd like it if one character could hold items bound to another character (though they wouldn't be able to use those items), so that we could temporarily have an alt hold some of our extra gear when we need to free up bag space for loot. There would need to be safeguards in place to make sure that nobody could trick someone into buying or trading for an item they can't use, though. Perhaps just a warning message if someone tries to take an item bound to someone else out of storage or mail, and restricting them from transfer through the AH or trading window would work.

In the end game raids there are elf stones that are barter items for the radiance gear. The stones and armour are bind on acquire. I would like to have them bound to account so that I could perhaps pass them onto another character.
