Re: Awarding Rep on the forums

I have given out positive reputation to several threads that I disagreed with but thought that they were well written and thought out. At present I can not give negative reputation, however there are few posters here that I would do so to. Even the majority of posters I have on ignore I would not give neg rep to. Someone like Hans Blix or ShevinSmith possibly.

I think the rep on this forum is bunk. I've been on these forums and with the game since beta but I can't neg rep anyone because I haven't written countless posts about nothing or posted tons of cat pictures. I don't want to neg rep people I don't agree with, I want to neg rep the people that are insulting other people and circumventing the filters. So until 1500 people think that I'm witty I can't do anything but reply to a troll which is pointless. It's sad to me that this forum which should be a nerd haven is instead turning into a high school popularity contest. I have never been popular and I don't see me suddenly starting to be so in my 30s.

Does anyone even know for sure "what" negative rep looks like? I once though I got some with a dark gray box, but it turned out to be "neutral" rep. I often wonder if people who think they get negative rep are getting these neutral boxes and thinking they are negative just like I did.

I wonder this mainly because so few people can give negative rep and it's limited, but a fair good number of posters have claimed to have received negative rep.

Jilla, I think those blocks of neutral rep you have gotten were from people who have not made their 1st post on the forums. These lurchers can not give any rep at all until they make at least one post. Basically, you recieved a vote from someone who has not registered to vote so their vote did not count.

Ah, kind of like Guam voting in Congress.

I am still wondering what negative rep looks like though. Is it a red box (that's what I would think it would be) or is it a yellow or some other color?

To be honest, whenever I see a really off the wall extreme post, I look at their post history. Sometimes people have a bad day/week or just have a easy trigger on a certain topic.

Others, self included, enjoy a strong debate if it brings up interesting views from both sides. Throwing out an opposing view can often bring out even better arguments that support their view. It tends to make the self proclaimed authority on the subject either put up or stand down. Sometimes they put up some very good reasons that enlighten us rather than "I'm a capped out (insert class) that knows better.

I would guess a red box, though.

Guessing that some of that came from the "Lack of End-game" thread. Or at least threads with a similar theme...

Pretty funny how the thread needing help with awarding rep has been frequented by a certain crowd of our most chiclet laden posters. Just sayin.

Um, since we're answering questions about forum rep here I have one. How much rep do you have to get before you see a second green box show?

    I'm thinking that it's only 100, but I'm not positive. 1 box with 1-99 rep, another from 100-199, 3 with 200-299, 4 with 300-399, 5 with 400-499? I know that when I hit 500 I got a 6th box, but then I didn't get another one at 600, so now I'm confused.

I believe it happens quickly - 50 points? Perhaps block #3 comes at 200? Just continue to be friendly, helpful and contribute with your posts and you'll find out quick enough! =)

Or better yet, since I rep'd ya... what was the tipping there, Mr. 2 Blocks? =)

You seem to get another box for each hundred points you get until about 500 points (6 boxes) then it takes 200 to get that 7th box.

I would imagine that having more chiclet's tends to mean that we know a bit more about the system than someone who does not have many chiclets or is grey.

There does need to be a serious penalty for flagging someone with negative rep that was unwarranted under forum guidlines. Two of my kinnies were pretty upset the other night in vent chat over negative rep they had received for what I took as two very well written posts. As far as I could tell the only thing I could find in common was that both posts were highly critical of Turbine PvMP, but I can't really get into the PvMP arguments, I just don't follow that community very well, not my cup of tea. It does seem to get heated though.

There should be a penalty for negative reping someone just because you don't agree with them. I think my two kinnies will be leaving the game soon. They're already upset with the game and this has irritated them considerably more. This was their only outlet for venting... other than in vent... where I have to listen to it.

But still, they are paying customers, soon to be "were" paying customers. Systems like this are fine on free sites, but when you're giving one paying customer the ability to harass another paying customer what exactly are you trying to accomplish, other than silence and laziness? Should Turbine consider letting go any community related staff now that this is in place? Should they move those resources over to more development. Are they needed any more really with an autopilot at the helm? What prevents these mob appointed "Rep"resentatives from turning into a squad of brown shirted goose stepping Eric Eichman Cartman hallway monitors? Has it already happened? Do they even have that right when they pay the same fee to use the forums as everyone else? Turbine started this on DDO right, isn't it a free to play game, but don't we all pay a fee to be here on the Lotro forums? A bit different isn't that?

Sure, when Turdram shows up crackin' wise its negative rep time, but when you're abusing it against people you simply don't agree with, there needs to be a punishment for that.

    Who watches the Watchmen?
There is punishment for rep farming, and for griefing with the rep system. We review rep regularly and when we find clear violations we infract all involved and strip them of any rep earned. We also restore rep to those who have been the victims of griefing by others.

Just a reminder that your forums access and subscription are separate. Form access is a privilege extended to our subscribers. Hence why you can lose posting access without losing access to the game.

Re: Awarding Rep on the forums

Most people don't fathom one reason why things like this gets instituted...

CMs and other community relations employees are part of a generally small team, one that isn't a very active hire team due to the type of front-face attention they have with the subscribers.

With Turbine operating three separate games, each with their own communities, then it's hard to keep enough eyes watching the world. Generally it's devised as tools to have the community better police itself, for example allowing post reporting makes it far easier for the CMs to find problematic posts and posters without having to tick off time searching each and every post.

With the Rep system, it further enhances this ability for the CMs to utilize their times more efficiently by allowing those that, thus far by all accounts, are steps above the general poster to take some of the burden off the CMs shoulders by pointing out specific people who do more issues than not.

Can rep be gamed, abused, or otherwise circumvented? Yes. However as Sapience mentioned above and how it was mentioned months ago when the system was put into place, there will be constant audits of the people who can give out negative rep and they are handled when things aren't going how it should be.

I view the reputation system as the forum version of GLFF. Most people know what it is intended for and actually use it as such, but then there are those that insist on using it their own special way!

(I'd hope, though, that most people would give reputation based on tone and content of posts rather than whether it is something they themselves agree with.)

lol. So very true. I like to pretend GLFF doesn't exist by putting it in its own special tab and only glancing at it when I absolutely have to.

p.s. You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later. /shakefist
