    Server downtime

So the other day i saw the message about the downtime : The LOTRO Game Servers will be brought down on Monday, May 14th from 6:00 - 10:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT)
Being form the UK i believed the servers would be back up at 2pm GMT but to my confusion i have found out that this is not the case the server will be back at 3pm GMT which would make it -5 GMT.
Really i would like to know why is this? Have they not checked the time differences before posting? Has anyone else thought the same as me? Or am i just silly for not knowing this?

That is actually correct, I believe, as the US are in daylight saving (as is Europe) so whilst they are -4GMT, currently, that is still -5BST and -6CEDT.

Because we're currently under BST which is an hour ahead of GMT? So 3pm BST is the same as 2pm GMT.

This is correct. GMT never changes, however both the US and UK monkey with their clocks (Go forward, go backward, and repeat). So to keep things constant we always put the GMT offset as related to our posted times. We always post the US East coast times as that is where the servers are located. The GMT offset let's you work out your time based on what that offset is.

10AM (-4 GMT) means GMT -4 Hours = 10AM, so GMT would be 2PM. Then you need to apply whatever local daylight savings time, adjustments, or what have you to that number. In the fall, when the US clocks go back an hour you'll see us change to (-5 GMT) to reflect that change.

Also, we expect to be about 10-15 minutes late bringing the server back online today.

I take it back, servers are now open. Two minutes early!

And I think Zulu time would just confuse the heck out of people. UTC might be less confusing.

Oh, I'm logging on now. Woohoo!

GMT was(is) Zulu-time. And zulu-time is now also known as UTC, which sohuld be used instad of GMT as term, because of the ambiguity of "GMT".

I don't know what is ambiguous about GMT, it's meant the same thing since 1847 (that's just after a quarter to seven).
