    Lord of the Aircraft?

    http://youtu.be/cBlRbrB_Gnc

First the Denny's commercial, now this? Tolkien is turning over in his grave.

This is why you should never license your material.

If Tolkien had never licensed LotR, none of us would be here right now.

It's a tad hypocritical for you to complain about the licensing of LotR whenever you've obviously enjoyed - or are enjoying- a product made possible by licensing of the material (else why would you even be on the LotRO boards in the first place?).

Haha, that's the first time I've actually watched all the way through an airline's safety video. Good on them. I really can't see any problem with this kind of thing. NZ deserves to promote their country and should be proud that it was chosen to represent Middle-earth. As much as I love LotR, you have to have a sense of fun.

I have absolutely no problem with this.

It's cute, serious-but-not-serious, and filled with lots of wry jokes about not only LOTR but about the fans and the movies themselves (i.e., the girls mooning over "Aragorn", then it pans back and reveals he's holding a hair dryer...I almost lost it there :-D Plus, the two guys arguing over how to pronounce "Mordor", then they get bonked on the head into emergency brace position, heh.). And I don't see it as a very blatant shill, but rather, just a nice bonus for flying Air New Zealand.

I agree with Jimeih, I am a big fan of LOTR and Tolkien, but it's good to have a sense of humo(u)r about the thing you love, too. And you DID actually pay attention to this security briefing for once, right?

I was gonna share this with you guys, but y'all beat me to it.

I thought it was cute and silly. Very lighthearted and a nice nod to the fans. (I laughed at Peter Jackson hanging out in the front row, although the Aragorn with the hair dryer is definitely a close second. )

That was pretty awesome. I loved the guys arguing over how to pronounce Mordor.

I find this really awesome. It's made with so much creativity and a lot of good humor. You really have to watch it multiple times to grasp all the funny details... like the huge softball eye and I laughed a lot when I saw Sauron locking down his phone when he was asked to. Safety first, guys!

I so want to fly with Air New Zealand now.

And my puppeteer wants to marry Kara.

At the least we know the dark lord values safety.

  14. What a fantastic way to help people remember important safety tips.
I can't imagine why Tolkien would mind.
    Thanks for sharing it!

Air New Zealand always runs interesting safety videos. When I flew there in 2010, the video starred the All-Blacks.

Came here to share this with you, only to find it allready here

Very well done video, have to watch it again for finding more details
Sure flight instructions are boring, but important... and even if the video helps half of the people to remind on the safety instructions in case of emergency it's worth all the effort making such awesome vids

Turbine, to date, has done a fairly good job as far as the lore goes, but between the Denny's commercial and this, it's taking the license too far. That is why I said what I said.

And, technically, this isn't Tolkien's, or the Tolkien's estate, doing. Saul Zaentz (AKA Middle Earth Enterprises) is the one that handles the license for LOTRO (and WB, and the movies, and the commercials, etc.) I am willing to bet that if the Tolkien family could, they would take the license back.

Hmm the All Blacks, I distinctly remember going into one of their merchandising stores in Auckland and (not so) politely reminding them that WE are current Champions of the World and that they hadn't won the rugby world cup for over a decade, nearly got divorced 12,500 miles from home

Well, the video has the blessing of at least some family members - two of Tolkien's great-grandsons appear in it:

Anyway, if you just don't like the video, then that's fine. As far as uses of the LOTR IP goes, I think it's far from the worst. And many of the jokes are pretty clever.
