You'd rather judge by, what? Hair color?

I have all those types of investments, and I'm retired. One of the ways I managed to save all that money was buying used good at pawn shops. What's the difference between a set of cast iron cookware at a pawn shop vs new? About $100 in my case, plus a few hours work scrubbing and re-seasoning.

, aren't they the places where drug dealers and losers take there stolen stuff?
No. Many states now have laws that require the pawn shop to copy driver's license, take a photo, etc. of the person pawning something. That puts the kibosh on the sale of stolen goods right quick.

I will assume the IRA means a totally different thing over there? Or an unfortunate typo

Hehe In the USA, IRA means "Individual Retirement Account". I get why that would cause a double-take though!

I suggest you get yourself a credit card, and pay it back within 30 days to avoid future problems such as this. Failing that, take a trip to the pawn shop, you might learn something. Or even do what other overstretched families do - do without. People lose their homes and have to visit pawn shops to pay for food for their kids, all kind of reasons, often due to no fault of their own. Forgive me for having 0 sympathy if you choose to tie up much of your funds in investments, then slate others who may not have had that opportunity due to more basic needs, and need to find a way to get through the week. Illness is not an excuse to show no empathy. Good luck with your treatment.
