    A PM Notification

    Greetings!

I'm certain that this has been suggested before, but I'd love to see some kind of notification that I've received a new Private Message. I know absolutely nothing about coding or forum design, so I have no idea about the amount of work that would take, but I do know that it would be appreciated, and probably not just by me.

Either way, I love these forums and really do appreciate all of the work that goes in to making them a wonderful place for this community to gather. And I'll continue to support them regardless of the PM issue.

    With warmest regard,
    Khally

Good idea. I remember to click Private Messages perhaps once a month.

It could be that it's a feature? I imagine less messages are sent because it's not very visible and potentially less stress for the forum host.

The option for in-forum notifications exists - it just doesnt work; the only way is to enable email notifications - which also doesnt always work.

Omg. This a thousand times. I have to visit the PM menu itself just to see if I have a PM or not. Very user inefficient. That is one phrase that no one wants associated with their website.

Ah, thanks for the info : I thought it worked, so I did not check my PMs for months.
I just checked now and I found many old PM (from Ride_the_Train, thatabguy, Rhunar , ...), so sorry if I did not answer...

I don't know of any forum that doesn't have PM notification popup for the forum except this one. I had a PM for ages before I realized I wasn't informed. I would suggest attempting to find out why it doesn't work or get a new/modern forum?

I've been looking into this and so far haven't found a way to turn on PM notifications. Agreed that it is something that should be done.

Years ago there was a count of unread private messages.

Later on that was replaced by a different mechanism. It used to be that you got a new private message notification as a pop up when the message was received. Not logged in - you never saw it. No paying attention - You never saw it.

I might have new private messages at the moment. I rarely take the effort to check since I get so few of them.

    The OTG also uses vBulletin.
I only get pop-ups when I log in to the site. No email notifications.
However, the pop-ups can be blocked by any pop-up blocker, especially things like Ad-Block or Ad-Block Pro. However, as a Mac User, I note that Safari does NOT block those pop-ups.

I should also note that there is a setting in the individual user preferences (General settings under Private Messaging) to turn on email notifications for Private Messags.

    https://www.siteground.com/kb/enable...ulletin_users/

    and: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum...ge-is-received

It is a user preference so they can disable that option. However, you can make it the default for new users by going to:

AdminCP > Settings > Options > User Registration Options > Default Registration Options

...and ticking the 'Send Notification Email When a Private Message is Received' option - then hit Save.

Thank you SO much for this! I've gone into my settings and rearranged a couple of things that hopefully will change things for the better. Thanks again!

I don't care how much of a 'fangirl' this makes me, but I was truly excited to see that you had posted this LOL. So very glad to hear that this is something you're looking into! (For one thing, it means that my suggestion wasn't pie-in-the-sky or totally unreasonable! LOL)

Best of luck in your efforts in this regard. I know you can fix it!

With warmest regards and a hopeful heart,
    Khally
