    New Instrument: Trumpet

A Trumpet would be a nice instrument to play in game and make music with, as we do get some references to Trumpets in the books, we do know that at Bilbo's birthday party Hobbits played, trumpets, horns, pipes and flutes, and other musical instruments, 3/4 have been added to game but no trumpet yet, and that be nice to see.

Trumpet was actually on my wishlist of things to add when we decided to add more instruments into the mix (along with fiddle and bassoon). Unfortunately I was only able to tackle two out of three. That being said, it's still something I'd love to add at some point (along with a sustained lower string option). No promises and no time frame, but hopefully someday!

Ah that sounds nice, more lower-end strings, also glad to hear it will be added at some point, well hopefully.

    Sorry, I could not resist.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

I dont suppose the Hurdy Gurdy has crossed your mind when adding new instruments perhaps? (slides 20$ across the table)

That's the fanciest way I've ever heard anyone say the word 'cello' before. Unless you meant double bass.

Tho now I'm suddenly picturing Minstrel battle instruments... and a wee hobbit wading into the fray with a BATTLE CELLO! that's bigger than they are. There's a Rob Paravonian joke in there somewhere regarding Pachelbel's Canon too.
Shhh. Listen. Listen to the sound of suffering. Resolve to relieve it. Lift others up. Be kind.

    Viola da gamba!

Yeah, but if you play the Canon you really ought to play the Gigue too.

Judging how the existing Theorbo (which in real life is rather longer than its player is tall) is scaled down for Hobbits, till it is no bigger than a tenor lute (to keep the neck fron dragging on the ground), I should think a Hobbitic cello would be about the size of a tenor viol.

Note, however, that in The Hobbit Thorin's companions are described as playing flutes, "little fiddles," clarinets, a drum, a harp, and (for Balin and Dwalin) two "viols as big as themselves."

As to trumpets, in the cut scene for Volume IV, Book 7, "The Trap," we see straight trumpets being played, and a glorious sight it is too. Such trumpets csn play in only one key, and the note played is determined by the player's embouchure and breath control. I'd like to see those in game.

Now that you mention it: are there any plans to complete the bassoon as minstrel instrument? Currently it lacks sound, which is ... suboptimal for an instrument.

Bassoon combat sounds should be coming along with the next patch. I didn't end up the bandwidth for it in U24 proper, but I actually just finished work on it the other day.

    oh this would be sweet!

Personally, I'd go with a bugle or a coronet; they are smaller and have no fingerings, but were more traditional in battle. The festival fancy designed ones could have banners on them too

/bump. Entering its 4 year since asked for this, almost wasn't going to bump this old thread, but am wondering any possibility for 2024? then maybe the music devs can do what they like again, making instruments, I know it will come one day in the future, but gotta bug on this.
