If you could have a member of the Fellowship of the Ring join you permanently on your journey...

I would have Gandalf the White, to guide me.

I would definitely have Gimli join me on my journey. Number 1: He's a dwarf, and I love all things dwarves. What you could learn about the intricacies of dwarf life that you wouldn't know otherwise! Number 2: He's fun...and funny. (And sometimes he doesn't even know it). The deadpanned-ness of a dwarf is classic. Plus, he carries an axe. Who wouldn't want to be with someone who uses an axe?!? Wouldn't go anywhere without one myself. Very utilitarian that. Chopping wood, fileting fish, lopping off goblin heads and selling them as trophies...the uses are endless! And I'll bet Gimli has a few more to add to that list! Number 3: Gimli's loyal, and almost to a fault. He's one-minded in purpose and doesn't allow his...errr, uh....[I]shortcomings[I] deter him from fulfilling his mission. Gotta have that. Love that. Number 4: He can learn and appreciate others. Gotta go with that.

Love Gimli. Love the dwarves. Gotta have him in my fellowship. No questions asked.

I would like to choose Galadriel, for her protection & healing powers.
“Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay; Small acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps because I am afraid, and he gives me courage.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien

Definitely Gandalf, his knowledge and willingness to play the LONG GAME with the machinations of Middle Earth were tantamount to the outcome of history.
